Good 19th century double barrelled 12 bore hammer shotgun by Jeffrey, Guildford. Damascus barrels, back action locks nicely engraved with gundogs and game. Engraved serpentine hammers. Rotary lever under trigger guard. A good gun in its time. Deactivated with certificate. Good working order and condition.
C G Finch-Davies Game Birds and Waterfowl of Southern Africa Quarto A collection of 68 watercolours by C.G.Finch-Davies. A limited edition # 401 of 5026. Slipcase and dust jacket Fine.190pp including list of benefactors. originally, the paintings were commissioned by Boyd Robert Horsbrugh, to illustrate his book `The Game Birds and Waterfowl of South AFrica`, published in London in 1912. It was widely acclaimed and brought Finch-Davies recognition as an outstanding bird artist. All 68 illustrations are exceptional in that they have coloured backgrounds, whereas Finch-Davies`s other paintings (numbering over 1000) have simple, pencilled in ones. This collection of originals came to light, through their donation to the Transvaal Museum, Pretoria by Boyd Horsbrugh`s nephew who lives in USA. The text accompanying each plate has been compiled by Dr. Alan Kemp of the Transvaal Museum, providing a useful insight into the biology of the species covered in this work. Maydon. 376 pages, photographic frontispiece and numerous photographic plates, colour map as front endpaper, original yellow cloth with gilt titling on the spine and a vignette on the upper cover. The cloth is stained and lifting at the bottom of the upper cover, the lower hinge is split along the entire length, staining at the bottom of the endpaper map and this carries through the ten leaves, name stamps on the front free endpapers, the remainder of the contents are good. A fair copy only. Czech (Dr Kenneth) An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books from 1785 -1999, page135, `Hughes travelled to Nyasaland in 1901 as an assistant native commissioner in the British South Africa Company, eventually resigning his post in favour of becoming a full-time hunter and trader. Over the next decade, he explored and hunted around Lake Bangweulu and its attendant swampy region, and the rivers Chambesi and Luapula. There are numerous hunting incidents, particularly after elephant, lion, buffalo, hippopotamus, and rhinoceros, with cheetah bagged near the Luena River. In addition, eland, sable, puku, sitatunga, warthog, and other game was collected. He also provides advice for future sportsmen: `Always aim low at a buffalo - his chest is only two feet from the grouud; nevery fire unless you can see him properly`....This is an excellent work of hunting and adventure with wonderful detail of the area (today`s Zambia), and quite scarce.` Fair London Published by The Field No date (circa 1933)

Rockingham House Lough Key, Boyle, County Roscommon. An album with record of game and photographs relating to Rockingham House, Lough Key, Boyle, Co, Roscommon. Circa 1898. Oblong Folio. Hard cover, with mss. record of game on the estate. 30 photographs include hunting on the grounds and abroad. Rockingham House, outside of Boyle, designed by John Nash in 1809/10, was the home of the King family, Cromwellian settlers. The house was destroyed by fire in September 1957.
