A New Game of the History of England, hand-coloured engraved sheet of clockwise spiral of small circular portraits and scenes around central portrait of George III, dissected and mounted on linen, 564 x 534mm., some spotting and light soiling, together with Rules and Directions booklet, half-title, pencil numbers, some spotting and staining, original pink wrappers, original engraved label to upper wrappers, corners of lower wrapper clipped, little creased and soiled, both housed in original marbled board slip-case with original engraved label to upper panel, rather worn, but holding firm, [Whitehouse pp.29-30], John Wallis & John Harris, 1804.
Railways.- Game.- Wallis (Edward, publisher) Wallis's Locomotive Game, of Railroad Adventures, hand-coloured engraved sheet with large central aquatint scene of Britannia surrounded by 48 smaller views, dissected and mounted on linen, c.490 x 620mm., bright colouring, folding into original gilt pictorial cloth folder with ties, rubbed and stained, lacking ties, [Whitehouse p.44], small 4to, Edward Wallis, [c.1840].⁂ Scarce charming topical game depicting locomotives, carriages, stations and hazards of early railway travel. Library Hub records only one UK copy of the game (University of Liverpool library); WorldCat lists 4 copies in America, some with rules.

A New Game, manuscript, title and 43pp., pen and ink decorated title and illustrations in the text, original patterned card boards, 8vo, Ballylin, [Donegal], 1848.⁂ "Rules of the Game. The players spin a telotum numbered from 1 to 8, and whoever gains the highest number, begins, by placing his traveller on the corresponding number on the map... .
James I, King of England. Basilikon doron [graece]. Or His Maiesties Instructions to his Dearest Sonne, Henry the Prince, woodcut title-device and ornaments, contemporary ink signature of E.Watson at head of title and Latin inscription signed Tho.Walker below the woodcut arms, with several contemporary ink annotations and underlinings to text, lightly browned, A7 lacking small portion from lower margin, modern calf, spine very slightly faded, 8vo, [STC 14354], by E.Allde for E.W[hite] and others of the company of Stationers, 1603.⁂ First published in 1599 in a very small number and reprinted in 1603 by several printers. This edition includes "tennise" among the acceptable pastimes. Henry is known to have spent much time playing and it has been suggested that he died after a hard game in inclement conditions.

JAMES WARD, RA (1769-1859) ROCKING-HORSE Signed indistinctly lower right corner, oil on canvas 49.5 x 64.5cm. Engraved: In mezzotint by the artist, 1793 Exhibited: London, The Royal Academy, 1792, no.356 Provenance: By family tradition, the picture was won in a card game from the Earl Spencer by Brigadier Gordon Barry, CBE, DSO, MC, the vendor's grandfather in law. An indistinct label on the stretcher reads Baron Spencer of Althorp/ afterwards Viscount Althorp/ with his sister/ Painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds/ Althorp Northampton. Although John Charles Spencer (1782-1845) and his sister, Lady Sarah (1787-1870), were apparently about the right ages in 1792, the suggested link with the Spencer family is otherwise wholly uncorroborated. ++ Old lining; some craquelure; needs a clean
