W.1. 25554', matt ramp-mounted bead fore-sight with tunnel-cover and flip-up moon-sight, matt quarter-rib with rear-sight of one standing and two folding leaves calibrated to 300 yards, the standing leaf with platinum-inlaid centre-line, border and scroll engraved receiver with matt receiver-ring, 14 1/2in. well figured pistolgrip stock including 3/4in. rubber recoil pad (minor setting crack behind receiver), chequered grip and fore- end, dark horn fore-end cap, border and scroll engraved case-hardened pistolgrip-cap with hinged trap-cover, border and scroll engraved magazine floor-plate and trigger-guard each retaining traces of original blued finish, silver escutcheon engraved with the initials 'C.F.J.', sling eyes, in original brass-cornered oak and leather full length rifle case lined in red baize, the lid with W.J. Jeffery leather trade label, with spare coil spring for the bolt, two spare fore-sight elements and a spare tunnel-cover. Provenance : C. Fletcher Jamieson, the famous Rhodesian rancher, professional ivory hunter and pioneer photographer. Other Notes: Fletcher Jamieson began his hunting career with a Holland & Holland .500/.450 nitro express double rifle but following an accident changed to a W.J. Jeffery .500 (Rimless) Mauser bolt-action rifle which he used exclusively for a decade taking over 300 elephants with it. He had seen a German-made .500 bolt rifle by Schuler at Mitchell & Fallon's gun shop in Salisbury (Harare) and was taken by the ballistic capabilities of the .500 round but was not impressed with the German rifle. He straight away ordered a .500 from W.J. Jeffery in London which was completed in July 1937. Jamieson was a close friend of John 'Pondoro' Taylor, famed hunter and author of African Rifles and Cartridges, and supplied all the photographs that illustrate Taylor's book. Specific mention is made to Jamieson's Jeffery rifle in the chapter on large bore rifles, Taylor noting that Jamieson specified a 26in. barrel over the normal 24in. to aid balance given his great height. Jamieson died in 1947 in an unfortunate accident whilst working on a well, cutting short the career of one of the last of the great African hunters.

This rifle appears to be virtually unused.

BOSS & CO. A RARE 16-BORE GAME-SCENE ENGRAVED EASY-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 6011, 26in. nitro replacement barrels (by the makers), rib gold-inlaid with a star and engraved 'BOSS & CO. 13, DOVER STREET, PICCADILLY. LONDON.W.', left wall-thickness below recommended minimum and with dents, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 1/2 choke, action with removable striker discs, toplever gold-inlaid with a star, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, rolled-edge triggerguard, the fences and underside engraved with best fine bouquet and scroll engraving, the sidelocks depicting spaniels in pursuit of and retrieving pheasant in a brambly setting, the triggerguard with a brace of pheasant, retaining some original colour-hardening and finish, 15 3/8in. replacement stock, weight 5lb. 12oz., in a modern canvas and leather case. The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was completed on the 28th August 1930 'to match and make a pair with No. 5722' for W.J. H. George. The records state 'specially engraved lock plates action to' and a later addition references the replacement barrels (7860) and the need for 'A stock forepart to be fitted to a pair of 26" barrels'.

A D.B. 12 BORE FRENCH PERCUSSION SPORTING GUN BY CUSSON A CLERMONT FERRAND, CIRCA 1840, with browned twist sighted barrels encrusted with the gold inscription `Canons de Leclerc` on the rib, the breech decorated with a gold bird, chiselled with slender ribs enriched with gold lines (small losses), stamped with the barrelsmith`s marks of Jean Nicolas Leclerc (Neue Støckel 187) and the serial number 4719 beneath, finely engraved breech tang decorated with scrolls and a central medallion decorated with a hound and her puppy in two colours of gold, signed flush-fitting shaped locks finely engraved with differing landscapes enriched with hounds, game birds and the signature in two colours of gold, engraved shaped hammers matching the locks, highly figured walnut half-stocks, engraved steel mounts comprising butt-plate, scrollwork trigger-guard, rear ramrod-pipe and barrel bolt escutcheons each decorated en suite with the locks, two further ramrod-pipes and a pair of sling swivels, vacant silver escutcheon, and brass-tipped wooden ramrod (incomplete), 78.5cm; 30 7/8in barrels. Cusson is recorded in Clermont-Ferrand circa 1825-45.
A FINE AND RARE 32 BORE D.B. RUSSIAN FLINTLOCK SPORTING GUN BY IVAN PUSHKIN, TULA, CIRCA 1790, with individually forged two-stage barrels faceted over the forward portion, retained by a shaped silver band incorporating the fore-sight towards the muzzle, formed with a broad flat at the breech, inlaid in silver and two colours of gold with elaborate panels of scrollwork enclosing the maker`s inscription in Roman and Cyrillic characters, a pair of birds-of-prey above a cornucopia and all framed by slender panels of martial trophies, silver lined vents, the breech tang fitted with a moulded back-sight and damascened in silver and two colours of gold with scrolling foliage (the barrels very slightly shortened and the back-sight added in the gun`s early working life), stepped bevelled locks inlaid with trophies-of-war beneath the pans and bouquets on the tails, the cocks and top-jaws decorated en suite, figured walnut half stock inlaid with delicate patterns of silver wire scrollwork behind the rear ramrod-pipe, ahead of the trigger-guard, and about the tang (the fore-end with minor repairs), the latter incorporating trophies-of-arms, chequered grip, the butt with carved raised cheek-piece on the left, inlaid with further trophies-of-arms and scrolls in silver wire on each side, the spine and behind the trigger-guard, inlaid with an engraved gilt copper plaque decorated with a cupid mask on the left and right hand sides, a garland incorporating a trophy-of-hunting beneath, the cheek-piece applied with a further gilt-copper plaque decorated with a pair of birds above a bouquet of flowers and garlands formed as an inverted Imperial Crown, engraved steel mounts damascened in silver and two colours of gold, comprising butt-plate decorated with a pair of game birds entwined by a garland supporting a cornucopia, trigger-guard with shaped terminal matching the butt-plate and with a trophy-of-war incorporating a fasces on the bow, rear ramrod-pipe decorated with a trophy and a pair of fronds, vacant gilt copper escutcheon, and engraved bone fore-end cap, and complete with its steel-tipped ramrod (the decoration with light wear and minor losses), 77.5cm; 30 1/2in barrels. Signed Tula firearms are notably rare and few by this maker are recorded. Another is preserved in the Moscow Kremlin and another, formerly in the Clay P. Bedford collection, is illustrated in W. B. Gusler and J. D. Lavin, 1977, p. 226-227. The Bedford gun and the present example both share a number of features that are characteristic of high quality Tula gunmaking of this period. Namely, the use of silver and two colours of gold on the steel mounts, fine silver wire on the stock, and inlaid gilt copper plaques. The style and use of damascene about the tang of the Bedford gun is identical to that of the present gun`s butt-plate and trigger-guard. Both guns share the use of the inverted Imperial crown on the cheek-piece, all of which are indictative of this maker`s work. See J.F. Hayward, 1963, p. 268 and ill. 79C.
A good pair of Chelsea (gold anchor period) porcelain two branch figural candlesticks, each modelled with seated figures of a huntsman and female companion, dead game and gun dogs beneath bocage, on gilt decorated rococo pattern bases encrusted with flowers, 11ins high (painted gold anchor marks to reverse - circa 1765 - with restoration to sconces and flowers, and bocage slightly damaged and with some restoration). Provenance: Exhibited at the British Antique Dealers Association - Art Treasures Exhibition, Bath 1958, No. 293
Attributed to Jan David Col (1822-1900). A Pair of 19th Century Oils on Metal, depicting two maids preparing food beneath an arch, and two figures beneath an archway with a display of game on the ledge before them. 7½ ins x 6¼ ins (19 cms x 16 cms). In ripple-moulded ebonised frames 13¾ ins x 12½ ins (35 cms x 32 cms).
* Panchal (Shanti, 1951-). The African Game, watercolour on paper, signed, 73 x 54cm (28.75 x 21.25ins), framed and glazed, with Edwin Coe label to verso. Shanti Panchal was born in Gujarad in India, and studied art in Bombay, and later at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London, on a British Council Scholarship, and now lives and works in London. His work has been widely exhibited in India and the UK, including a touring solo exhibition entitled Private Myths organised by the Pitshanger Manor Gallery in 2000. * Wardle (Arthur, 1864-1949). Wild ponies on Exmoor, oil on board, signed with initials lower left, 26 x 38cm (10.25 x 15ins), framed. Arthur Wardle (1864-1949), a self-taught sporting artist, best known for his images of hunting dogs, exhibited at the Royal Academy and the New Society of Painters in Watercolours. His first one-man exhibition was held at the Fine Art Society in 1931. Sporting subjects include `Grouse Shooting`, `An Otter Hunt on the Moors`, `Shetland Ponies`, as well as studies of big game.
