Spode bat-printed Dessert Wares, a large fruit stand with gilt borders, and a pair of shell-shaped Dishes, en suite, all with pattern no 1222 in red, all very slight gilding wear, 37.5 and 24.8cm (3). The patterns are Morning or the Benevolent Sportsman after George Morland, Game Birds and Greyhounds and Fox. See Spode nos P422; P402 and P414-1. This last is the first and rarer version of the print which was re-engraved to remove the fox and replace it with a hare.
The following three lots were shot by the vendor`s father, Mr Theodore Wessel, Danish Ambassador to Chile, in Kenya in 1924. Wessel would have been accompanied by a white big game hunter, probably a fellow Dane named Baron Bror von Blixen, a leading professional hunter in East Africa. He was husband of the authoress Karen Blixen, best remembered for her book `Out of Africa` which was subsequently brought to screen starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. A pair of African black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) horns, mounted on an original oak shield inscribed `Kenya BEA 1924`, applied pressed metal label verso `Griffiths, McAlister & Cook Ltd., Blackpool and London`, larger horn outside curve 70cm approximately 6kg

Ephemera – fashion – an early 19th c fashion game a group of seven delicately hand coloured costume designs each featuring a cut out of the face together with a further card with the face of a young lady. The object of the cards is to show the face against the various costume designs which include native dresses from Albania Greece France Russia etc. Each with a ms identification. Scarce. We have not been able to trace another such set.
Ephemera – football – political the original artwork of a cartoon by Franklin intended to be used by the Sun newspaper in the event of England beating Germany in the semi final of the World Cup in 1990 executed in black ink on a white board – original crack down the middle probably when originally discarded. Red crayon mark to right hand side ‘To be used only if England win.’ The cartoon shows Mrs Margaret Thatcher standing outside Number 10 Downing Street dressed as Winston Churchill giving a ‘V’ sign and smoking a large cigar with the speech balloon ‘We fought them in midfield...in the wings...in the penalty area...’ This was a cartoon we never saw as it was prepared for the Sun in the event of England winning the game – as we all know despite the game going the full distance and to the end of extra time England spectacularly lost to Germany in the resultant penalty shoot-out with both Pearce and Waddle missing.
A 19TH CENTURY HORN SNUFF MULL with inscription relating to the gift of this box made from a clee of the first cow belonging to John Homes Junior of The Birchem which was given him when a calf, at his birth, the first day of July 1844, by Edward Poole Esq of The Homend. Is presented to him as a mark of esteem by William Pudge Junior, 23rd November 1848. Sold with a large white ground tankard with gilt and jewelled monogram JH, painted with a cow and game, inscribed to the base and presented to J Homes Esq by J P and J W, and a smaller Copeland tankard with inscription John Homes Junior, aged 1 year, July 11th 1869. (both tankards with extensive old repairs)
