A Very Rare Cased 19-Bore Forsyth Patent Roller Primer Sporting GunBy Forsyth & Co., Patent Gun Maker's, London, No. 410, Circa 1811With rebrowned twist barrel with silver fore-sight, signed along the top of the breech and with a short flat at the top and on each side, case-hardened patent breech with two gold lines, engraved serial numbered primer, border engraved tang decorated with a brace of pheasants amid foliage, signed case-hardened serial numbered flat bevelled lock decorated with starbursts and with gamebirds in landscapes at the stepped tail, striker decorated with foliage en suite, finely figured half-stock (minor old bruising) with chequered grip and silver fore-end cap, border engraved steel mounts comprising butt-plate (some pitting) decorated with a gundog and gamebird in a landscape on the heel tang, blued trigger-guard decorated with a similar scene on the bow, case-hardened trigger-plate with pineapple finial, vacant silver escutcheon and barrel-bolt escutcheons, and brass-mounted ramrod: in lined and fitted mahogany case (one compartment divider loose) with numerous accessories including brass-mounted powder-flask (priming-flask missing), leather shot-belt, and circular boxes, one for original grease, the interior of the lid with large illustrated trade label of second design (for 1809-11) between two smaller labels relating respectively to Priming Powder and Grease, the exterior (old splits, one along the back with three contemporary brass securing straps) with flush-fitting brass carrying handle centred on a vacant circular escutcheon, London proof marks 74.5 cm. barrelFootnotes:ProvenanceH.H. Sporting Gun By Beckwith, London, No. 1924, Circa 1810Converted from sliding primer, with re-browned damascus twist sighted barrels signed in gold gothic script along the rib, and with two gold lines in front of each breech, breeches each with pierced platinum plug and three gold lines between, tang engraved with foliage inhabited by a game bird and a gun dog's mask, flat locks each signed in gothic script and decorated on the tail with foliage issuing from an eagle's head, all within a border of guilloche, foliate scroll engraved dolphin hammers, figured half-stock (repaired during the gun's working life with an iron plate secured by screws around the trigger-plate finial) with chequered grip, border engraved russet steel butt-plate and trigger-guard each decorated with scrolling foliage, the latter retaining some original blueing on the inside, trigger-plate with pineapple finial, rear ramrod-pipe with finial en suite, gold escutcheon engraved with owner's monogram, and brass-tipped ramrod: in original mahogany case fitted and lined in faded navy blue velvet with some accessories including Sykes patent powder-flask with bevelled bag-shaped body and adjustable flip-top (cut-off spring incomplete), four burnished steel double-ended shot dispensers (one lid missing), and a burnished steel oil bottle, the interior of the lid with maker's illustrated trade label (stained), the exterior with flush-fitting brass carrying handle centred on a circular vacant brass escutcheon, London proof marks 74.5 cm. barrelsFootnotes:William Andrew Beckwith was apprenticed to Wattell Clark in 1785 and was elected Master of the Gunmaker's Company in 1808, 1814, 1825 and 1840, the year before his death. He is recorded at 58 Skinner Street between 1802 and 1841. In 1811 the Rev. Alexander Forsyth took a lawsuit against Beckwith successfully claiming that the 'patent' sliding primer lock was covered by his patent of 1807, although it is thought that the lock was actually invented by Joseph Vickers, a former workman of Forsyth's. Nock, Gun Maker To His Majesty, No. 4518, Circa 1709-95Converted from flintlock, with twist leaf-sighted barrels, signed along the rib between the two top barrels, each barrel cut with seven spiral grooves, case-hardened breech-block with gold line and engraved with a starburst on top, border engraved tang decorated with foliage and a Britannia shield, and with a starburst in the sighting groove, signed serial numbered flat bevelled lock with stepped tail, highly figured half-stock with cheek-piece and chequered grip, border engraved blued steel mounts comprising butt-plate (rust patinated) decorated with hanging game on the blued heel tang, trigger-guard (loss of finish on the tang) with a recumbent stag in a landscape on the bow, trigger-plate with large pineapple finial, rear ramrod-pipe en suite, silver barrel-bolt escutcheons, original brass-mounted ramrod, and some original finish: in original lined and fitted oak case (one partition loose) with accessories including rare brass charger, gang mould for fourteen balls, three wooden ball holders, brass-mounted powder-flask with bevelled elongated body, and leather flint wallet, the interior of the lid with illustrated trade label (minor damage and old stains) for circa 1789-1804, the exterior with flush-fitting carrying handle, London proof marks 49.5 cm. barrels Footnotes:ProvenancePiers Mostyn, Bt. Nock's shop about the rifle, written by Nock's clerk James Wilkinson, who later set up in business on his own as James Wilkinson, gunmakers, a firm that survived until recently as Wilkinson Sword Ltd.Seven-barrel rifles were made popular by Colonel Thomas Thornton's A Sporting Tour through the Northern Parts of England (1804) and A Sporting Tour through France (1805), where he described their use on roe deer as well as birds.
