Henry Yates Thompson (1838-1928), British newspaper proprietor and collector of illuminated manuscripts. Scrapbook, 1860s, compiling naïve field sketches & watercolours produced during travels in Europe & Western Asia (depicting people, customs/culture, landmarks, scenery), as well as several manuscript notes relating to the American Civil War, placing bets and prophecies on the outcome with John Jermyn Cowell. 'HYT bet £2 - even - that the American War will be to all intents & purposes over in 90 days from this time i.e. on June 1st 1865 without the recognition of Southern independence from the North' (dated 3 March 1865, 7 Stone Buildings, Lincoln's Inn); 'JJC bets 5/s that Sherman has lost either a leg or an arm'; 'HYT. I will bet £5 that the Union is restored by the 4th March 1867 or in other words there is no Confederate Govt in America in existence east of the Mississippi' (dated 25 Jan 1865). The more detailed predictions, marked 'prophecies', describe campaigns in Georgia & Virginia, and mention names including Grant, Sherman and Hood. The album also includes a number of documents relating to Henry Yates Thompson being called to the bar, letters relating to the shooting of game, and several contemporary newspaper clippings on various subjects. The album has material on 78 pages (counting pages, not leaves), some mounted at corners, some pasted or tipped-in, some loose. Quarto, green crushed morocco, all edges gilt. Contents generally well-preserved with spotting in places; binding heavily worn as found, boards detached. NB. Henry Yates Thompson was called to the bar, but instead spent time travelling throughout Europe & the United States where he witnessed the Second Battle of Chattanooga. He later gained ownership of the Pall Mall Gazette

A Belgian 60-Bore Box lock Percussion Pistol. With beautiful turn-off Damascus ‘fingerprint’ fluted 2¼” barrel, 8-point turn-off. Liege proofs on breech. Frame beautifully decorated both sides with game bird scenes, the birds protruding from the frame in white metal. The top strap and bottom of action engraved with scrolls, with concealed trigger. Stepped lock engraved with game-bird scene and signed ‘PATISSON’. Top of frizzen & top jaw missing. Fully stocked (fore-end now missing) with brass mounts, t/guard broken, rear part missing, and bow engraved with game-bird scene with pineapple finial. Irish census AN6905 inscribed on heel tang, overlaying ensuite engraving. Overall length of 53¼”. Action working.

BRIGADIER ALLEN ROBERT BETHAM SHUTTLEWORTH (BRITISH ACTIVE 1912-1920) WATERCOLOUR PAINTING OF ZIARAT IN PAKISTAN, 'Ziarat 1929' bottom left and signed by the artist to the bottom right. Brigadier Allen Robert Betham Shuttleworth (20 February 1873[1] – 30 July 1935) was an officer in the British Indian Army and player of The Great Game.[2] Shuttleworth was born in Dapoli, North-West Provinces, India, to Allen Thornton Shuttleworth, who won the Albert Medal of the First Class, and Laura Phoebe Betham. His younger brother was Sir Digby Shuttleworth. Shuttleworth joined the British Army relatively late, beginning his career in the militia. For a time in 1908, Shuttleworth was acting Consul in Kashgar while George Macartney was in England. During this time, Shuttleworth became involved in investigating the expeditions of Eizaburo Nomura and Zuicho Tachibana, even dining with them at Chini-Bagh. Shuttleworth reported his suspicions to Sir Francis Younghusband, and these suspicions about the two Japanese eventually made its way to Lord Morley, Secretary of State for India. Shuttleworth died suddenly in Ajmer, Rajasthan. Provenance: Property of a local resident of Wimbledon Village.

A LARGE BRONZE 'ARROW' VASE, TOUHUMing DynastyThe compressed globular body cast with four archaistic taotie masks each separated by a flange, the shoulder with two open-mouthed Buddhist lions, all raised on a spreading foot, the tall slender neck with two applied writhing chilong beneath the mouth with two cylinders attached joint with the same band decoration of taotie masks on a leiwen ground. 50.8cm (20in) highFootnotes:Provenance: Frank Gardiner Fedden, acquired in the early 20th century and thence by descent.明 銅投壺These type of vases were designed for the ancient Chinese game of touhu, or 'arrow throwing', which would form part of the entertainment at banquets and is mentioned in early classical texts such as the Chunqiu Zuo Zhuan. Contestants would aim feathered arrows at the various cylinders applied to the vase, with higher points awarded for the less accessible openings.
