Tarocchi cards.- Mitelli (Giuseppe Maria, 1634-1718) Gioco di carte con nuovo forma di Tarocchini, five plates (of six), consisting of 51 cards (of 62), the cards illustrated with full-length queens and kings, figures on horseback, fools, cups, and batons, etchings on laid papers, with various watermarks including heads in profile within an oval, and others with the letters 'FB' in circles surmounted with a trefoil [probably ca. 1690-1720], each platemark approx. 270 x 350 mm. (10 5/8 x 13 3/4 in), all with good margins, some light surface dirt, spotting and browning in places, all unframed, [circa 1690], (5).Literature:Bartsch (XIX. 305.158-161); Bertarelli, 1940, nos. 629-634; Willshire, 1876, Italian 7A ⁂ Scarce. Designed to be cut up to form a complete pack of 62 tarot cards for the game of tarocchino. We have been unable to find a comparative record at auction.

Games.- Bravin (Angelo, publisher) Il novo e piacevole gioco del pela il chiu (recto); [Roman Catholic religious calendar for 1831] (verso), recto with game board featuring four concentric ovals containing squares with dice, human figures or owls, with a crowned owl in the centre surmounting a crown resting on three dice showing sixes, instructions in Italian to each corner, engraving, on laid paper with watermark of the letters 'M A', sheet 430 x 305 mm. (16 7/8 x 12 in), a good impression with minor signs of wear, trimmed within platemark lower left, small nick to lower right corner, unframed, 18th century but reprinted in Venice, circa 1831. ⁂ 'The name of the game means 'pluck the owl'. It involved throwing three dice, identifying the place that corresponded to the throw on either the inner or the outer oval and then carrying out the written instructions. 'T' means tira that is the instruction to take the number of quattrini ('Q') indicated; 'P' means paga that is the instruction to pay out the number of quattrini indicated. A throw of three sixes takes all.' [Michael Bury, 'The Print in Italy 1550-1620', BM 2001, cat.103]
