Sleek model of a roulette man / tombola on the play table. Probably after an older example. Note: This is an old roulette game. The numbers 1 to 12 are affixed to the table top. The little man, with the stick in his hands, stands with one leg loose on a column, in the middle above the table. The round bar is equipped with 2 weights and keeps it in balance. This way the man can be turned around, and when he has come to a stop, the stick points to a number, just like in the roulette game. The Netherlands, Leeuwarden ?, presumably Johannes Beeling ?, 19th century (1846-1888 ?), hallmarks: maker's mark (most closely resembles Johannes Beeling), sword with key, unclear hallmark - traces of use and the man is missing 1 (probably raised) foot. 41 grams, 835/1000. Dim. W 7.5 cm, H 9.5 cm. Estimated: € 50 - € 100.

An early map of Nepal, dated 1892, linen backed and mounted, framed and glazed. 105 x 80.5 cm overall. Published under the direction of Colonel G Strahan R.E offg Surveyor General of India.The map was produced at the height of ''The Great Game'' when the British and Russian Empires were fighting for the control of Central Asia and the British Empire was protecting India, ''The Jewel in the Crown" from perceived Russian threats. Nepal was a closed kingdom and was forbidden to foreigners, despite this the map shows numerous unpublished routes by various officers, furnished by the Quartermaster General's Department, Intelligence Branch and unpublished sketches and Reconnaissance by Colonel H.C.B Tanner, Major F.A Wilson, Captain E.G Barrow, Mr W Robert and Rinzin Nimgiyal. This map pre-dates by 11 years the British Expedition to Tibet under the leadership of Sir Francis Younghusband, mounted to counter the Russian Empires perceived threats and ambitious on India's Northern Border.

A BRONZE ARROW VASE, TOUHU, XUANDE MARK AND PROBABLY OF THE PERIODChina, 15th-17th century. Heavily cast, the compressed globular body supported on a waisted foot with a stepped and galleried foot rim and rising to a tall cylindrical neck, flanked by lug handles with galleried rims repeated on the neck. Finely decorated with archaistic taotie to the body, divided by curved flanges and enclosed by leiwen bands, and to the upper neck, as well as a band of ruyi-heads to the shoulder, a neatly incised wood grain design to the lower neck and pendent palm blades with leiwen to the central neck.Provenance: Collection particuliere française.Condition: Very good condition with old wear and some casting irregularities, minuscule nicks, occasional light scratches, minor dents. Fine, naturally grown, dark patina.Weight: 3,753 gDimensions: Height 29.2 cmThe recessed base incised with a four-character mark Xuande nianzhi within a square and probably of the period.The form of this vase is inspired by archaic bronze vessels used for touhu (lit. 'pitch-pot'), a traditional East Asian game that requires players to throw arrows or sticks from a set distance into a large, sometimes ornate, vessel. The game had originated by the Warring States period, probably invented by archers or soldiers as a pastime during idle periods. It began as a game of skill or a drinking game at parties, but by the time it was described in a chapter of the Chinese Classic Book of Rites, it had acquired Confucian moral overtones. Initially popular among elites, it spread to other classes and remained popular in China until the end of the Qing Dynasty. Touhu was usually a contest between players, who had to throw arrows into the mouth or tubular handles of the vase, which was placed at an equal distance between two mats on which the players knelt. Touhu vases continued to be produced in the Song dynasty and later, made in various materials including bronze, cloisonne, and ceramic.Expert's note: The present touhu vase differs from other examples, commonly dated to the 16th and later centuries, in its elaborate incision work and distinctive mask decoration. Furthermore, the Xuande Emperor was known to be quite fond of the game, as evidenced by a painting of him playing touhu by Shan Xi (in the Palace Museum, Beijing). Baillie Grohman'. Grohman (1851-1921) was an Anglo-Austrian author, a big game sportsman, a mountaineer and a pioneer in the Kootenay region of British Columbia. His literary works are primarily on the Tyrol region and the history of hunting. Underneath his name, in another hand, reads 'presented by the author'.

A SHADOW AGATE SNUFF BOTTLE, 1750-1850China. Very well hollowed, of rounded rectangular form with an oval foot ring and recessed base. The semi-transparent stone of a pale caramel tone with natural dark-brown inclusions. The darker streaks and shadings to the stone forming an appealing composition.Provenance: From an English private collection. Condition: Good condition with little wear, minor surface scratches, some nibbling to the mouth, the spoon with a loss. A BRONZE 'HUNTING' GROUP, MING DYNASTYChina, 1368-1644. Finely cast as a dog seated on its rear haunches, its spine neatly articulated, the mouth agape revealing teeth and a long tongue, the bulging eyes lending the animal a quizzical expression, a collar around its neck centered by a small double-gourd. A small falcon with incised wings is perched on the dog's head.Provenance: French trade. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting flaws, few small dents and minuscule nicks, occasional light scratches. Fine, naturally grown, smooth patina.Weight: 662.5 gDimensions: Height 13.7 cmExpert's note: The dog depicted in this bronze is most likely a Saluki, originally bred in the Fertile Crescent and once used by nomadic tribes to run down game animals. Examples of dogs that look like Salukis were painted by the Xuande Emperor, who himself was an avid hunter, a characteristic shared by many Ming Emperors.
