John White Abbott [1763-1851] - Lime kiln near Topsham on The Exe, figures and a game of quoits in the foreground,:-oil on canvas 98 x 147cm.* Provenance. Possibly Royal Academy Exhibit 1796, No.206, Landscape, Lime Kilns & Figures.* Note There is an oil painting of a similar view in the collection of The Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery Exeter: 'The Old Lime Kiln near Topsham, signed J.W.A and dated 1808, 101 x 149cm.* Note This lime kiln was owned by Topsham's Robert Davy who became one of the most productive merchant shipbuilders for the Navy during the Napoleonic wars. He developed six shipyards on the back of building lime 'stone boats' and 'lighters' (called 'lighters' because they made the stone boats lighter, as they came up the shallow Exe Estuary). The kilns burnt lime stone into powder using layers of 'culm' coal and, for warmth, vagrants used to sleep on them. The lime powder was used as a fertiliser and the stone for building.

A William IV silver-gilt vinaigrette, by Nathaniel Mills, Birmingham 1830, rectangular form, engine-turned sides and base, the hinged cover with a cast relief panel of game birds with their chicks, the underside with a vacant cartouche, the grill pierced and engraved with foliate scroll decoration and with a central flower, length 4.8cm, approx. weight 1.5oz.

WW Greener 12 bore Royal Facile Princeps side/side shotgun, 30" Damascus barrels, cylinder and cylinder choke, 2 1/2" chambers, rib engraved "W.W. Greener, 68 Haymarket, London, Winners at The London Gun Trials 1875, 1877, 1878 and 1879", rib also engraved with a heron and acanthus scroll engraving to the breach end, muzzles also engraved with vines and leaves, the Facile Princeps action profusely engraved with acanthus scroll and with hunting dog and ducks, also marked "W.W. Greener", underside engraved with pair of rabbits, the trigger guard with hunting dogs and the tang with wild fowl. The top lever engraved with a gold crown and with side safety, double trigger, 14 3/4" well figured straight hand stock with 1/2" ebonised extension. Also comes with leather, oak and brass cornered case with "W.W. Greener" leather trade label to the lid, also with game licences from the original owner James Borwick-Darwen dating from 1891. Serial No. 39654. SHOTGUN LICENCE REQUIRED
