A collection of silver plated meat skewers, each of varying designs, comprising; a pair terminating in a decorative finial with lobster and fish to one side and the other with game birds and a hare, length 27.7cm, five skewers of plain form, with ring pulls, another skewer, with a realistic cast model of a hunting dog to the end, together with a set of four corn cob skewers (12) weight combined 7.3 troy oz.

Zsamboky (Janos). Emblemata, et aliquot nummi antiqui operis Ioan Sambuci tirnaviensis pannoni, 4th revised edition, Antwerp: Christopher Plantin, 1584, printer's woodcut device to title and portrait of the author to verso, 222 woodcut emblems and 45 pages of ancient coins, skillful closed tear repair to leaf L8, all edges gilt, modern red crushed morocco [by Darlaud Freres], inner dentelles gilt and book tickets of Robert Hoe and C.A. & V. Baldwin to front pastedown, small 8vo, preserved in a modern chemise cloth-covered clamshell box The first edition of Zsamboky's (or Sambucus, 1531-1584) Emblemata was published in 1564. Among the emblems depicted are one showing a game of tennis and one a bookstore, possibly Zsamboky's own library which was to become the foundation of the Austrian National Library. Brabourne (Wyndham W. Knatchbull-Hugessen). The Birds of South America, 2 volumes. (Text/Plates), 1912 & 1917, additional half titles, volume 2 with thirty-eight fine hand-coloured lithographic plates after H. Gronvold (complete), descriptions of plates bound at rear, occasional spotting to a few plates, double-page colour map to volume 1, volume 2 with t.e.g., publisher's cloth gilt, spines slightly faded, 4to, Zimmer, Ayer Ornithological Library, p. 85/6. As projected, this work was to have comprised 16 volumes with 400 plates, but the death of the senior author terminated the publication after the issue of the present volume, containing only the list of species. A series of 38 of the plates intended for this work was issued subsequently, under separate authorship and title, as "Illustrations of the Game Birds and Waterfowl of South America," by H. Gr”nvold, 1917. (2)
Cricketing interest. A rare Victorian papier-mache oval tray, painted with 'Cricket in the Artillery Ground' after Francis Hayman, mounted on a later stand to form a table, the tray: 61 x 75.4cm. The original painting by Francis Hayman can be found in the Marylebone Cricket Club Museum at Lords. It depicts an early game of cricket being played with a thin curved club and the wicket keeper believed to be William Hogarth who was a friend of Hayman. In the mid 18th century the Artillery Ground, Finsbury was the sport's focal point and home of the London Cricket Club.
Cricketing interest. A collection of cricketing prints and memorabilia, including: a printed F. Lillywhite's Cricket Score for the All England v The United Eleven match at Kennington Oval 1861, 'THE LAWS of the NOBLE GAME of CRICKET' published by John Wallace, 'Tossing for Innings' a coloured reproduction print, a photographic print of 'THE ENGLAND ELEVEN WHICH DEFEATED THE AUSTRALIANS AT THE OVAL, AUGUST 13TH & 14TH', an engraving by William Weekes 'WELL STOPPED!', 'THE ROYAL FAMILY IN THE HIGHLANDS: CRICKET- MATCH AT BALMORAL', 'THE CRICKETER SONG' a later photographic print and a pair of Spy re-strikes of W.G. Grace and Lord Hawke, and an oval stipple engraving 'Cricket playing', all framed and glazed, 68 x 54cm (max). (10)
