1975 ENGLAND RUGBY UNION TOUR JERSEY believed issued to Alan Old (b.1945), on the Australian Tour in the Queensland v England mid-week match, at the Ballymore Stadium, Brisbane on the 27th of May 1975. The traditional white jersey with white collar, bearing embroidered Tuder Rose, No.10 stitched to reverse and label for Umbro with orange diamond. The result was a big win for the England by 29 to 3, the jersey is believed to have been worn by Alan Old who played No.10 in this match. The 1975 England rugby union tour of Australia was a series of eight matches played by the England national rugby union team in Australia in May and June 1975. England won only four of the eight matches and lost both internationals to Australia.Fly half Alan Old won 16 caps between 1972 and 1978 and scored an impressive 98 points in his international career, including one try. He made his debut in England's whitewash season of 1972 when the national side plumbed new depths of mediocrity. However, England drew sufficient resolve from this failure to manage an amazing 18-9 victory over South Africa in the summer. Old played in only two matches of the 1973 season, but they were both games to remember. First of all England secured their first win on New Zealand soil with a 16-10 victory over the All Blacks in Auckland, before following it up with a 20-3 hiding of Australia at Twickenham. Against Australia, England went ahead with tries by back rowers Tony Neary and Andy Ripley, before Alan delivered the coup de grace in the last five minutes, dummying three defenders before going over for his only international try.In 1974 Alan played in all four matches of the Five Nations Championship which included a 16-12 defeat of Wales, England's first win against the Celts since 1963. He also scored 17 points against Ireland at Twickenham after England had gone 20 points down, but England still lost 26-21. Aside from his kicking heroics, he committed a spectacular gaffe when he tried to field a clearance kick with one hand, only to tee the ball up for John Maloney who raced the length of the field to score. That year Alan was also selected for the British Lions tour to South Africa and kicked a record 37 points in a 97-0 defeat of South Western Districts in Mossel Bay. His achievement was even more remarkable for the fact that he only missed one of seventeen kicks. Unfortunately he was unable to challenge for the test side due to suffering a broken leg, but in truth he would have done well to shift Phil Bennett.Alan Old played in just one match of the 1975 season, a 12-9 loss to Ireland in Dublin, but was selected for England's tour to Australia in the summer. Rookie Neil Bennett was preferred in the first test defeat in Sydney, but the Bedford player suffered an injury and had to be replaced by Cambridge University student Andrew Wordsworth in what proved his only appearance for England. The experienced Old was called up for the second test in Brisbane and helped keep his side in touch with three penalties and two conversions, but England eventually went down 30-21. The following year Alan played in tests against Scotland and Ireland, but both matches were lost as England headed for their second whitewash in five seasons. He was destined to play only once more for England in a 15-6 defeat by France in Paris in 1978, signing off with a pair of drop goals (something his replacement John Horton would achieve at the same venue in 1980).The following year Old played superbly in partnership with Steve Smith for the North in their 21-9 victory over the All Blacks at Otley. Both men scored tries and were seen as the ideal half back partnership for the forthcoming test between England and New Zealand at Twickenham. However, the selectors instead decided to use Les Cusworth in the fly half role and his game was unsuited to the style of play favoured by Smith, with England eventually losing 10-9. Alan did make it to the bench during the 1980 Five Nations Championship, but did not play any tests. Interestingly, while Alan was playing international rugby, his own brother, Chris Old (see elsewhere on this site), was representing England at cricket. Alan himself was a decent cricketer and played a handful of matches for Warwickshire, taking one first class wicket. The two also had the distinction of representing their country on the same day, February 2nd 1974, Alan against Scotland at Murrayfield, Chris against the West Indies in the Caribbean.Provenance: private collection Queensland, Australia, in 1997, the vendor purchased the jersey with a collection of other jerseys from Bob Gordon, volunteer manager of the after match player function room at Ballymore Stadium, Brisbane

Lot 171

A LARGE BLUE AND WHITE SIX-TUBE ARROW VASE, TOUHU, MING DYNASTY, TL TESTED 明代青花投壺式瓶Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 15 February 2024, based on sample number P124b27, sets the firing date of two samples taken between 400 and 600 years ago, and hence is consitent with the dating of this lot. A copy of the report, signed by Helen Mason for Oxford Authentication, accompanies this lot.Expert’s note: The six small and rather unusual lion heads applied on the shoulder of the present vase once suspended bronze rings, which have long been lost to time. It is possible that these rings were used to keep score when playing touhu with this vase, since there is exactly one lion head for each of the six arrow tubes.China, 16th to early 17th century. The pear-shaped body supported on a waisted foot and rising to a slender neck, the mouth applied with six tubular arrow holes, the shoulder with six pierced lion heads. Finely decorated to the exterior in shades of cobalt blue with scholarly figures and their attendants inside a fenced garden with large willows, below a band of ruyi heads at the shoulder. The neck with three magpies on a prunus branch and a large pine tree, the mouth and arrow lugs with floral designs, the foot with a band of lotus petals.Provenance: From a private collection in Paris, France.Condition: Expected old wear and firing irregularities, including burst bubbles, black spots, firing cracks, glaze recesses, and kiln grit. The neck with a horizontal luting line showing an old fill, visible also on the inside, and associated glaze lines. Minor smoothened chips to the foot and occasional light scratches. Two holes from sample drilling.Weight: 3,136 g Dimensions: Height 38.3 cmArrow vases were made for a drinking game called ‘touhu’ (lit. ‘pitch-pot’), which had been popular among elite men and women from the Spring and Autumn period of the Eastern Zhou dynasty. The Ming-dynasty Emperor Xuande was known to be quite fond of the game, as evidenced by a painting of him playing touhu by Shan Xi (in the Palace Museum, Beijing). Players threw arrows into bronze or ceramic vases with narrow tubular necks at prescribed intervals, each player equidistant from the vase. The winner successfully projected all his arrows into the vase and the loser was forced to drink at each miss. Elaborate rituals and intricate rules, recorded in the Li Ji (Book of Rites), added further complexity to the game. Puzzling pitching techniques were described in the Touhu Yijie (Ceremonial Usages and Rules of Touhu), an illustrated manual written by Wang Ti (1490-1530), and these shots were given fancy names, like ‘A Pair of Dragons Enters the Sea’ when two arrows were thrown from a great height at once into the vase. The touhu game was used to practice archery, one of the essential accomplishments of a gentleman. Later in the Ming era, the game became more widespread, being played by rich merchants as well as the aristocracy and scholarly elite. A scene in the famous late Ming novel Jin Ping Mei (Plum Blossom in the Golden Vase), written in 1619, describes the wealthy merchant Ximen Qing's seduction of his concubine Panjinlian. She becomes inebriated while playing touhu on a picnic and the game leads to an amorous encounter. For a further discussion of the game see Isabelle Lee, Touhu: Three Millennia of the Chinese Arrow Vase and the Game of Pitch-pot, Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, vol. 56, 1991-2, pp. 13-7.Literature comparison: Compare a related Cizhou painted arrow vase, 40 cm high, dated to the Ming dynasty, circa 1522-1566, in the collection of the British Museum, museum number 1937,0716.74.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Galerie Zacke, Vienna, 29 September 2022, lot 106 Price: EUR 26,000 or approx. A WHITE AND RUSSET JADE ‘FOUR SCHOLARLY ACCOMPLISHMENTS’ GROUP, SIYI, QING DYNASTY 清代白玉雕四藝擺件Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價China, 18th-19th century. The stone carved in the form of a qin, a weiqi (go) board, a brush pot, a gnarled prunus branch, and billowing ribbons, symbolizing the 'Four Scholarly Pursuits' (siyi). The translucent stone of a pale yellow color with areas of russet and cloudy white inclusions.Provenance: London, United Kingdom trade.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and minuscule nibbling.Weight: 45.5 g Dimensions: Length 4.9 cmThe four arts (siyi), or the four essential arts of the Chinese scholar, were the four main academic and artistic talents required of the aristocratic ancient Chinese scholar-gentleman. They were the mastery of the qin (the guqin, a stringed instrument), weiqi (the strategy game of Go), shu (Chinese calligraphy) and hua (Chinese painting).Every scholar in Imperial China was expected to play the seven-stringed zither or qin. The board game of weiqi was considered equally a pastime and an art form. Chinese calligraphy was highly regarded as an expression of the practitioner's poetic nature and a significant test of manual dexterity. It comprises a minimalist set of rules which facilitates a system of complexity and grandeur. Finally, every scholar was expected to learn the art of brush painting, which was regarded as the greatest expression of individual creativity, through which one could demonstrate his mastery over the art of line.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 30 November 2017, lot 717Price: HKD 100,000 or approx.
