Bereits im 18. Jahrhundert war es jedoch Bestandteil der berühmten Sammlung des Fürsten Wenzel Anton Kaunitz-Rietberg, Berater Maria Theresias und Josephs II., sowie Mäzen der Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Wien. Bis um 1900 war es in weiteren bekannten Wiener Sammlungen immer als Werk David Ryckaerts dokumentiert, danach schien sich seine Spur zu verlieren. Bernadette van Haute führt in ihrer 1999 erschienen Publikation unter den nicht identifizierbaren Werken ein Gemälde mit dem Titel "Children’s Game" ohne Abbildung an, welches sich ehemals in den Sammlungen Adamovics und Reisinger befunden hatte. Tietze hatte das Gemälde aus der Sammlung Reisinger jedoch bereits 1908 mit Abbildung publiziert und wie folgt beschrieben: "ein Zug von Mädchen und Burschen, die ein Mädchen in ihrer Mitte verspotten zu scheinen; rechts ein Mädchen am Boden, das von einer Alten mit der Schürze bedeckt wird." Die publizierten minimal abweichenden Maße sind wohl durch die Umrechnung von ursprünglich Zoll in Centimeter erklärbar.Nachdem durch Recherchen die bis ins 18. Jahrhundert reichende Provenienz und damit stets unbezweifelte Urheberschaft des Gemäldes zu Tage kam, konnte mittlerweile auch die bewegende Besitzergeschichte des Gemäldes im 20. Jahrhundert rekonstruiert werden. Der von Tietze und Frimmel um 1900 dokumentierte Besitzer Andreas Ritter von Reisinger verstarb 1936. Er setzte seine Frau Luise von Reisinger als Universalerbin ein, jedoch wurde dieser das Erbrecht abgesprochen (vgl. Lillie S. 955ff.). Da vorliegendes Gemälde aber in keiner der nach dem Tod Reisingers erstellten Verlassenschafts- oder Pfändungslisten aufgeführt ist, muss es bereits vorher verkauft und in den Besitz von Julius Priester gelangt sein. Dessen bedeutende Sammlung wurde ab 1938 von der Gestapo beschlagnahmt und verkauft bzw. versteigert. Der zur Flucht nach Mexiko gezwungene Julius Priester hat bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1954 weitgehend erfolglos versucht, wieder in den Besitz seiner ihm entzogenen Kunstgegenstände zu gelangen. Nachdem im Jahr 2020 ausgeforscht werden konnte, dass dieses Kunstwerk zu seiner Sammlung gehört hat, ist jetzt eine Einigung zwischen dem Einbringer und den Vertretern der Erben nach Julius und Camilla Priester gemäß den "Washington Principles" (1998) erzielt worden, sodass dieses außergewöhnliche Gemälde zur Versteigerung gelangt. Die Komposition des "Charivari" ist bereits durch ein weiteres Gemälde desselben Sujets im Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille bekannt (vgl. B. van Haute 1999, S. 92, Nr. A 43, Abb. 43). Bernadette van Haute publiziert dieses ehemals als Arbeit Jan Miense Molenaers geltende Werk als Gemälde von David Ryckaert III. Das ebenfalls unsignierte Lille-Gemälde ist allerdings auf Leinwand und nicht wie vorliegendes Werk auf Holz, wie für Ryckaert typischer, ausgeführt. In Sujet und Bildanlage ist die Komposition des "Charivari" besonders in die Nähe zu dem monogrammierten und 1639 datierten Werk Ryckaerts im Städelschen Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt a. M., zu setzen, welches einen "Umzug von Kindern" bzw. die "Pfingstbraut" (Whitsun bride) zeigt (Haute 1999, S. 86, A29). Eine weitere eigenhändige Version dieses Themas ist vor einigen Jahren im Kunsthandel verkauft worden und im RKD, Den Haag (Nr. 000018068) dokumentiert. Das vorliegende Gemälde besticht neben der künstlerischen Ausführung besonders durch den Reiz des Sujets. Es zeigt ein "Charivari" – auch bekannt unter Begriffen wie ‚Hullabaloo‘ oder ‚Ketelmuziek‘ – und bedeutet im Allgemeinen ein lärmender, polternder Umzug durch die Straßen. Im konkreten Fall jedoch, einigen lokalen Traditionen folgend, wird darunter ein Protestumzug zur Verspottung sexueller Freizügigkeit und im Besonderen der Zeugung eines unehelichen Kindes gesehen. Der karnevalistisch anmutende Zug ist in vorliegendem Gemälde von links nach rechts zu lesen. In der linken Bildhälfte sind fantasievoll bekleidete Kinder zu erkennen. Sie folgen der Hauptfigur, die ein Kind vorsichtig in Tücher gewickelt hält und die ironischerweise von zwei blumenstreuenden Kindern begleitet wird. Rechts neben ihr reißt ein Gaukler seine Zungen-Grimassen, während eine Figur in zerfetzter Kleidung, wohl der Dorfnarr, sein Gesäß entblößt. David Ryckaert nutzt in diesem Gemälde all seinen künstlerischen Einfallsreichtum um einen volkstümlichen Brauch auf eine höhere moralisierende Ebene zu stellen und damit seine damalige Auftraggeberschaft zu erheitern, zu ermahnen und damit zur Konversation anzuregen – das Ziel, das hinter derartigen Kabinettstücken stand.
