° ° Wallace, Harold Frank. The Big Game of Central and Western China Being an Account of a Journey from Shanghai to London Overland Across the Gobi Desert. London, 1913. Original cloth binding rubbed and worn, the rear spine cracking, * Signed by the author on the title page. Bookplate of Henry G. M. Dunn on the inside front cover and a letter from the author to him loosely inserted.Malcolm Lyell (1922-2011) a good shot, a fisherman, a naturalist, a gardener, a hunter, an adventurer, and a raconteur who has been described as having been the doyen of the London gun trade. After being educated at Bryanston and Westminster School, he took a degree in forestry at Bangor University in 1943 and worked as a forester until 1947 when he became the manager of Westley Richards London showrooms. In 1955 when the parent company made the decision to close the London showrooms, Malcolm sought the backing of British and American sportsmen to finance his takeover of the business and established Westley Richards (Agency). Soon after acquiring it he bought Jeffery’s the gun-makers, and later Farlow’s, the fishing tackle specialists. The ultimate salesman, he not only had a comprehensive knowledge but also loved and was proud of what he was offering for sale. Over the next twelve years he developed, expanded, and advanced the business with great panache and the able assistance of his wife Rosamunde (they married in 1949).His success brought its own reward, in 1959 Holland and Holland invited him to merge his company with theirs and he became the managing director of the new enterprise. By the time of his retirement in 1988, he had acquired a plethora of clients many of whom became great friends; they included kings and princes, maharajahs, presidents, and prime ministers. Hollywood stars, white hunters, sportsmen and trophy collectors fell under his spell and with Rosamunde and his two daughters Caroline and Harmony he travelled the world combining business with pleasure.Malcolm was born a collector, as a boy he collected objects to exhibit and opened his own “museum” in his parents’ house in South Kensington (admission to it cost the viewer one penny). Throughout his life his own houses became filled with treasures gathered from across the globe. His passion and the intense enjoyment that he derived from his collection can be seen in the ephemera and the considered personal notes and annotations that he added to most of his books.

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Olympic Centennial Games - Basketball" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 32? Basketball Classic Collection Series stamp issued May 2, 1996. Basketball is considered the only sport strictly of United States origin, and made its Olympic debut in 1936. Over the years, basketball -- both the game and its players -- has gained international popularity. Today, fans around the world follow the scores of American college and professional teams, as well as those of teams from their own country. Generally considered the most athletically-demanding of all sports, requiring a combination of strength, speed, coordination and endurance, basketball continues to grow as an international and an Olympic sport. In the 1992 Games at Barcelona, the U.S. Olympic Basketball Team averaged over 117 points a game with an average winning margin of 44 points! The American players were so overwhelming that competitors considered it an honor to play against and lose to them. Image Size: 14.25 x 10.25 in. Overall Size: 23 x 14.75 in. Unframed. (B15482)

Lot 336

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Canvasback Duck" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the Waterbirds of the 50 States Utah/Canvasback Duck. The flapping of wings sounds from above. A delighted camper looks up to see a flock of Canvasbacks moving in to land on a nearby lake. As the birds slant in for a landing, they carefully scan the waterfront for predators .. for despite their imposing size, the Canvasbacks are extremely wary creatures. They are also one of the heaviest of game ducks. This fact coupled with the birds' good flavor -- have made them a favorite of the sportsman. The Canvasbacks can be found exclusively in North Ammerica, but they are well-known throughout much of this continent. Before the first freeze, the wedge-shaped flocks take to the air. Some fly over the Great Lakes toward the Middle Atlantic Seaboard. Some head down the Mississippi River to winter on the Gulf of Mexico, while others migrate along the Columbia River to pass the colder months on the Pacific Coast. The ducks spend the winter on bays and estuaries. As the Canvasback swims about on the bay, he assumes a profile that looks very much like that of a horse. This unusual profile prompted the Indians to refer to the Canvasback as the Horse Duck. The Canvasback may dive to a depth of thirty feeet to retrieve a meal of aquatic plants. Western Canvasbacks, like those that reside in Utah, prefer a diet of wapatoo or pondweed. But, whether the Canvasback is nibbling wild celery on Chesapeake Bay in Maryland .. or enjoying pondweed on the smooth waters of Lake Powell in Utah .. he is welcome wherever he makes his home. Image Size: 10 x 12 in. Overall Size: 17.25 x 19.25 in. Unframed. (B07611)
