History of Polo in China, hand painted on silk laid on board, with a typed extract by Herbert Giles on the history of polo in China, framed, 50.5 x 73.5 cm The earliest mention of the game dates to 710, when the emperor assembled hi court at a retreat, the Pear Orchard. The T'ang dynasty (618 - 907) encouraged polo, with Ming Huan an avid practitioner. During the Song dynasty (960 - 1279) confucian scholars articulated their concern about the game. Polo went into abeyance until modern times and in the 1920's there were clubs in Hankow, Hong Kong, Peking and Tientsin. With the Japanese invasion in 1937 polo stopped again and was resumed in the 21st century with clubs in Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin.

Walt Disney and polo interest: a scarce book "Walt Disney Presenta Una Partita Di Polo", first edition, Italian language, 8vo, 62 pages, beautiful selection of Walt Disney colour illustrations including full page plates. Original pictorial boards, published by Mondadori, Milan, 1940, very good condition “Mickey's Polo Team” was a short animated film with an 8 minutes running time produced by Walt Disney in 1936. The cartoon features a game of polo played between four Disney characters, led by Mickey Mouse with Goofy, Big Bad Wolf & Donald Duck; and four cartoon versions of real-life movie stars Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Harpo Marx & Charlie Chaplin. Spectators are also a miscellany of cartoon characters and movie stars. The film was inspired by Walt Disney's personal love of the game of polo. A fall in a polo match left him with four shattered vertebrae that would prove a health issue for the rest of his life. In 1937 Walt Disney participated in competition at the 5th Venice Film Festival, the movie released in Italy in the original English language format.
