* Korda (Alberto, 1928-2001). Fidel Castro playing golf in Havana, 1960, printed c. 2000, gelatin silver print, embossed stamp and photographer's signature in black fibre pen to left and right of lower margin touching image, image size 22.5 x 15.5 cm. sheet size 30 x 24 cmQty: (1)NOTESWhen Castro took power in 1959, one of his first acts was to plough up all but one of Cuba's golf courses, leaving just a nine-hole course. The exact date and reasons for this game between Che Guevara and Fidel Castro are not known. One suggestion is that Castro set up the match as a publicity stunt to mock President Eisenhower who had refused to meet him in Washington, having chosen to play golf instead. It is believed that Guevara beat Castro.

Cian McLoughlin (b.1973) Didi and Gogo Diptych, oil on canvas, 188 x 180cm Signed Provenance: The Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin. April 2006 marked the centenary of Samuel Beckett's birth. In honour of this occasion, the Beckett Centenary Festival Committee, in association with the Gate Theatre and the Department of Arts, Tourism and Sport, launched an exhibition of works by Cian McLoughlin. Showcased at the OPW, these pieces explored Beckett's three main plays - 'End Game', 'Krapp's Last Tape' and 'Waiting for Godot'. In order to prepare for this, McLoughlin spent three years talking to, studying and painting the actors who had become synonymous with Beckett's masterpieces, producing large scale portraits that strove to display not the actor, but the character which they embodied. Although not part of the original Beckett Series, the current works draw wholly on the experience that McLoughlin gained during this process. Commissioned by the Shelbourne Hotel in 2007, these diptychs capture the tragic couplings of Vladimir (Didi) and Estragon (Gogo) and Pozzo and Lucky from 'Waiting for Godot'. Encroaching as spectres from the fog, the faces of Barry McGovern, Johnny Murphy, Alan Stanford and Stephen Brennan are transformed. Their usual expressions are replaced by a haunted, uneasy look, causing us to examine the uncomfortable undercurrent of Becket's most famous work: our own existence. Throughout the play, the characters struggle to complete basic tasks, such as putting on shoes, and amble in a state of confusion and forgetfulness. It would seem that only Didi recalls the events of the previous day, but even so he clings to physical objects as proof, as if he too thinks that, perhaps, their place in the world isn't as concrete as it appears. Such reminders are gratefully accepted by Gogo, who is presented to us as the more vulnerable of the pair; 'We always find something, eh Didi, to give us the impression we exist' In 'Waiting for Godot', Beckett's characters are presented to us as pairs. Dominating the play are Vladimir and Estragon and these are complemented by Pozzo and Lucky. By forming two diptychs, McLoughlin has artfully mirrored Beckett's creation. Each half of the diptych can survive on its own accord, however, it is by pairing the canvases that the work is completed. 'Waiting for Godot' sees Gogo and Didi arguing and Gogo despairing, asking to end the wait. Yet, the pair do not separate. Similarly, Pozzo talks of selling Lucky but Act II sees them firmly side by side. It seems that each would rather stay together in a misery that they know than face an alternative. In one of the darker moments of the play, Didi and Gogo discuss hanging themselves from a tree. Ultimately, it is not the fear of death that holds them back, but rather the fear that one might live and be required to continue alone. By accepting the challenge of his Beckett paintings, Cian McLoughlin was forced to depict the intangible. Each piece became a study in human emotion, his brush strokes carefully gliding through a myriad of thoughts, concerns and fears. In an interview with Fumo Gallery, McLoughlin remarked on a quote by Robert Frost, 'a poem is like ice on a stove - riding on its own melting'. Here, it is clear to see that McLoughlin implemented this philosophy. With each glance, the paint slips forwards, the images tumbling to engulf the viewer in a wave of feeling.

Perrins percussion 12 bore shotgun, 28 inch Damascus barrels, the locks engraved Perrins and Son, and decorated with gun dogs and game birds, faintly chequered stock carved with a lion's head and fitted with grip safety catch, fitted into a non original but period case containing two flasks, Joyce cap tin, and screwdriver.Section 58(2) Antique /obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence.Condition report: The gun shows signs of significant use. The barrels have patches of pitting in places, the inside of the bores are in similar condition and it is doubtful if this pitting could be cleaned out, the ramrod is probably not original despite being of the period. The actions work correctly with the grip safety. The stock has a pleasing patina and figure but shows heavy wear to chequering which has disappeared in some places. There is a small repair to the stock around the ramrod pipe. The area of the stock around the hammers has what looks like a period repair but could be part of the original gun construction. This can be seen in images 9, 14 and 15. There are patches of pitting to the metalwork generally. The case has repaired splits to the lid. There is a section of wood that has been well spliced into one lower corner. It is otherwise of good patina and finish.
E. M Reilly cased 12 bore side by side shotgun, serial number 16830, black powder proof only, the 30 inch Damascus barrels engraved E. M Reilly & Co. New Oxford Street London & 2 Rue Scribe Paris, the actions engraved with game birds and scrollwork bearing traces of colour case harden, the figured stock with crisp chequering inlaid with vacant escutcheon and fitted with horn and steel toe butt plate. The leather and canvas case containing cleaning rod.UK RFD OR SHOTGUN LICENCE OR RFD REQUIRED TO BID ON THIS LOT.Condition report: The Reilly 12 bore is really nice crisp condition. The actions work as they should. Barrels are very tight on the face, they ring true when tapped. The outsides have a lot of the browning worn away. The left hand barrel has the slightest dent 7.5 inches from the muzzle which cannot be seen from the inside and is only visible when strong light is cast over it looking from the muzzle end down. The insides of the bores are bright and shiny with no pitting. They measure at .734 and .736. both choked to a loose improved cylinder. The woodwork has good sharp chequering, the usual minor scratches and marks but very nice patina with no splits, chips or repairs except for the forend where there is a split to the thin wood where it meets the barrels which has been reglued.Images of the proof marks attached. They are proofed at ‘12’
George and John Deane percussion double 8 bore shotgun, 32 inch Damascus barrels, fitted with platinum breach plugs, the top flat engraved with a gun dog's head, the named side locks engraved with gun dogs chasing game birds within scrollwork borders, chequered stock stamped with 1792 serial number, with vacant silver escutcheon, steel cap to pistol grip and pineapple finial trigger guard.Section 58(2) Antique /obsolete calibre, can be owned without a license.32 inch barrels.Condition report: The gun has a pleasing patina and the action works correctly. There are a few condition issues the main being the rib between the two barrels which is lifting slightly in two areas. The barrels have been cleaned up as the maker's address is faint. There is fine surface pitting to the metalwork generally. One bore has a patch of pitting (which I doubt will clean out) around midway through the tube, the other bore has no major pits but there is light surface pitting. The wood is generally good but there are some chips to the forend where the edges meet the metal of the barrels.

Sechskantige Pfeilvase. Bronze. Ming-Zeit, wohl 16. Jh. O. Kresko Collections, Saint Louis 2008, Kat.-Nr. 5 A hexagonal bronze arrow vase (touhu). Ming dynasty, probably 16th century The sectional globular body supported on a tall foot is subdivided by flanches into six panels with running fabulous animals in high relief, the neck encircled by a dragon and the mouth flanked by hexagonal appendages decorated with archaistic ornaments in relief. The arrow vase is associated with a very ancient game called touhu and in ancient times was played during and after banquets and drinking gatherings. Two or three contestants aimed short wooden arrows into one of the tree openings. Higher points were awarded for arrows thrown into the side openings, which was presumably more difficult than aiming for the central receptacle. The looser was made to drink a cup of wine. The game of touhu underwent a major revival in the 16th century.Height 58 cmProvenancePrivate collection, The NetherlandsLiteratureCompare similar vases ill. in: O.
