Briton Riviere, RA (British, 1840-1920)The Twa Corbiesigned with monogram and dated twice '1863' (lower left) oil on canvas 39.4 x 54.6cm (15 1/2 x 21 1/2in).framed as archFootnotes:ProvenanceWith Cider House Galleries Ltd., Surrey, no. F7593.Anon. sale, Sotheby's Belgravia, 18 April 1978, lot 96a.Private collection, UK.Briton Riviere's work, like many who followed them, shows the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites and in particular John Everett Millais. This influence can be seen in Riviere's paintings of edifying subjects grounded in literature and poetry - often concerned with love and death – set to the backdrop of the meticulously observed natural world. The present work is a prime example of this Pre-Raphaelite influence, as he has taken the subject from the Scots ballad 'The Twa Corbies'. This song probably dates from the 18th century and was first published in Sir Walter Scott's Minstrelsy in 1812. 'The Twa Corbies' is derived from the English folk ballad 'The Three Ravens', however it uses a darker, more cynical tone and tells the story with a morbid twist. This song tells the story of a mortally wounded knight whose hawk and hound have deserted him to chase game, and whose mistress has left him for another lover. The ravens are therefore given an undisturbed meal, as nobody else knows where the man lies, or even that he is dead. They talk in gruesome detail about the meal they will make of him, plucking out his eyes and using his hair for their nests. Riviere depicts the moment before the ravens reach him, one just taking flight. The knight lies amongst nature with his sword discarded by his side and his eyes remaining slightly open. Riviere cleverly depicts this work on the brink of sunset which could mimic the end of the knight's life and subsequently his dark fate to follow. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
