A single barrelled 20 bore flintlock sporting gun, by Lowe of Chester, c 1820, 50” overall, 3 stage barrel 34”, octagonal breech with Birmingham proofs, military style signed lock with raised pan and engraved with game bird, sunburst and sprig of foliage, walnut halfstock with horn fore end cap and chequered wrist, the scrolled steel trigger guard engraved with game bird in reeds and with pineapple finial, butt plate tang similarly engraved. Good Working Order and untouched condition, with pleasing patina, (no ramrod, some light rust). Plate 32
A good DB 10 bore percussion sporting gun, by William Moore & Co, London, number 1238, c 1850, 47¼” overall, barrels 32”, broad top rib engraved “William Moore & Co (Makers to H.R.H Prince Albert) 78 Edgeware Road, London”, and number “2”, the breeches with platinum line and vent; the signed locks and hammers engraved with borders, scrolls and dolphin heads; the dark walnut halfstock with deeply chequered fore end and wrist, the butt with gold escutcheon on underside engraved with crest, the finely engraved steel mounts include trigger guard bearing game dog, serial number and “2”, and butt plate tang also numbered “2”; the original brass tipped ramrod with concealed worm. Good Working Order and Condition, the bores clean. Plate 34
A 14 bore percussion big game rifle, by G.E. Walker, “from Purdeys”, 46½” overall, octagonal twist barrel 30” with folding leaf rearsight and engraved “G E Walker, Newbury, late with J. Purdey, 314½ Oxford St, London” (rather faint), the breech with two platinum lines and engraved with a stag’s head, the scroll engraved tang with vignette of tiger’s head; the flat bolted lock engraved with border, scrolls, big cat (tiger?) and “Walker from Purdeys”; dark walnut halfstock with horn fore end cap, chequered fore end and wrist, and cheek piece; steel mounts including large trigger guard containing single set trigger, hand grip behind trigger guard, and circular patch box engraved with stags (faint); with loops for sling swivels and original horn tipped ebony ramrod. Good Working Order and Condition (the barrel well rebrowned, the mounts have been pitted and refinished). Plate 34
