ATTRIBUTED TO CHRISTOPHER DRESSER OR JOHN MOYR SMITH, POSSIBLY FOR COX & SONS, LONDON AESTHETICthe galleried top with frieze inlaid with florets, the glazed door with lined and shelved interior enclosed by panelled sides, each inlaid with figurative allegorical roundels, the whole raised on a plinth base(68cm wide, 109.5cm high, 50.5cm deep)Footnote: Literature: Lyons, H. Christopher Dresser: The People's Designer, 1834-1904 (Woodbridge, 2004), p.19, 52 and 144; plates 12, 13, 51, 52, 260 and 260A Durant, S. Christopher Dresser, Academy 1993, p.19-20 Whiteway, M. (ed.), Shock of the Old: Christopher Dresser's Design Revolution, New York, 2004, Stapleton, A. John Moyr Smith 1839-1912: A Victorian Designer, Richard Dennis 2002, pp.11-15, plates 11 and 12 Cooper, J. Victorian & Edwardian Furniture & Interiors, Thames & Hudson 1998, pp.130-132 Woolley & Wallis, Salisbury, 20th Century Design, 14 October 2009, lot 549Note: This fine cabinet, although of conventional form, has particular design characteristics which set it apart; its distinctive gallery and the fine marquetry panels inlaid to the sides. The design of two of the inlays appear to be adapted from colour plates published in Christopher Dresser’s Studies in Design of 1876 - the hares from plate VII; and the duck from bird designs in plates XLVI and VI. There are also strong similarities to an illustration in his Principles of Decorative Design of 1873 (the fish from figure 20); and bird and animal designs for Minton & Co. circa 1871. These designs were, like other output from the Christopher Dresser’s studio, often drawn up and, on occasion designed under Dresser’s supervision by an assistant. In the case of the first two examples this assistant is thought to be the Scottish-born designer John Moyr Smith. The confusion surrounding the attribution of certain designs by Dresser is largely due to a lack of information but also that the stylistic similarities of many of his designs to those of his assistants is so striking. Some assistants were to leave Dresser’s offices and pursue careers of their own and although most believe that Moyr Smith worked for Dresser in his studio for a short period it may also be the case that he collaborated with him in the supply of designs to his projects on an ongoing basis. Whether he worked for Dresser directly or not by 1872 Moyr Smith was an independent designer supplying designs to a number of manufacturers including Cox & Sons in London. The firm of Cox & Sons, originally church furnishers, were involved in the art movements in the second half of the 19th century and commissioned furniture, metalwork, stained glass and ceramic designs from several leading designers, including Bruce Talbert and E.W. Godwin. Cox & Sons also supplied stained glass to some of Christopher Dresser’s interior projects, but if Dresser used them in a wider sense is unclear. He was obliged to distance himself from their output because of the similarities of his designs to those of Moyr Smith. The attribution to Cox & Sons is strengthened by the fact that the firm is known to have used one of the designs used on this cabinet on a single-handled vase (Woolley & Wallis, October 2009, Lot 549). Many of the firms who produced Dresser's textile and carpet designs believed in his abilities as a designer and were all based in the Halifax region. A number of them also commissioned Dresser to design the interiors of their homes. Of those only two domestic commissions survive and are in very poor condition, leaving only clues to the total composition of Dresser's interiors. In 1865 The Furniture Gazette published designs for the panels in dining room supplied by Dresser to J.W. Ward of Halifax, a textile maker who used Dresser’s designs. The panels represented fish, fowl, flesh, fruit, wine and beer. The panels in the current lot, representing Game, Fowl, Fish and Mutton may also have been designed for a similar dining room scheme. The profuse, albeit restrained, marquetry inlay of this cabinet is somewhat at odds with Dresser’s more characteristically austere and pared-down aesthetic. He was, however, known to have been expedient and his ‘theoretical utterances’ did not always get in the way of the success of a busy studio where it was impossible to be entirely pure in intention. Many of Moyr Smith’s published designs of the 1870s were later ascribed to Dresser suggesting their origins in Dresser’s studio. Either way, until further information emerges, the attribution of many of these intriguing pieces remains unclear.

Lot 106

Offered for sale is a very early Winchester 1886 octagon rifle manufactured during the first three years of production in the rare and desirable .40-65 caliber, low serial number 54168, made 1889. A scarce and desirable western big game chambering in the Model 1886, the .40-65 cartridge was considered a powerful, flat-shooting round based on the long .45-90 cartridge. John Browning designed the big Model 1886 to be the strongest and most potent lever action rifle of the day. The standard and correct 26” octagon barrel with full magazine tube shows a deep and rich aged blue finish and retains excellent Winchester markings that include: “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO., NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A.” The upper tang is marked with the earliest model designation and states simply, “MODEL 1886.” The receiver case colors have faded to an uncleaned gray/brown appearance. The action is fully functional and tight. Even the bore is surprisingly bright and fine with good rifling all the way through. Further, this early 1886 is fitted with a buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and a small dovetailed front sight. The top of the octagon barrel ahead of the receiver is correctly stamped with the caliber designation “40-65.” The 1886 in .40-65 chambering was very popular in the American West where it was considered a powerful enough cartridge for the largest game encountered plus having the advantage of being flat shooting enough for long shots at distant targets. This is an early and seriously powerful frontier rifle in very good and uncleaned condition. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

Lot 168

For your consideration is a very early Civil War era Sharps New Model 1863 .52 Caliber Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine, serial number C,25227. One of the most popular and successful of the cavalry carbines was the Sharps breech loader. Capable of firing a grooved bullet in a combustible black powder loaded paper cartridge with automatic paper cap or single loaded with lead slug with loose powder behind and ignited by a percussion cap, the Sharps gained a rapid reputation as a reliable, accurate, powerful and fast firing weapon. Troops armed with single shot muzzle loading muskets were no match for the new breech loaders designed by Christian Sharps. After the Civil War many of these battle proven weapons went with their original owners to the western frontier where they were used for general self-protection, big game, and buffalo hunting. Most of the New Model Sharps rifles and carbines were later converted to fire the standard .50-70 metallic cartridge and reissued for Indian War use. This example shows Civil War usage yet remains in a remarkable state of preservation overall. The round 22” barrel retains the original blue and shows a naturally thinning finish with a desirable plum patina. The barrel is fitted with its original “R. S. LAWRENCE, PATENTED FEB. 15TH, 1859” marked ladder rear sight with slide intact. It also retains the correct marking “C. SHARPS PATENT” over “SEPT. 12TH, 1848” on the left side of the receiver. The left side barrel flat just ahead of the receiver also retains the sharp “E.A.W.” tiny inspector stamping. The lock plate on the right side of the receiver retains a Lawrence 1859 patent markings plus the C. Sharps 1852 patent markings. This wonderful condition carbine displays a lovely mottled gray/brown patina on the receiver and even retains traces of original case color under the hammer and in the most protected areas. All metal parts show that they have never been cleaned or restored. The forend and butt stock show only light wear and retain a tight wood to metal fit. The sling bar is intact. Some screws and the rotating breech block removal pin on the right side of the receiver still retain some fire blue. The stock is also highly decorated in brass tacks. The left side of the stock features a circular tack pattern and the right shows a detailed diamond pattern. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

Each framed piece shows a U.S. stamp that is part of one of the water or game bird collections along with a signed print of the original artwork on the stamp. This limited print is numbered 9867/16500, and is signed in the bottom by the artist and comes with the print sleeve showing information about the artist and print. The second piece shows two wood ducks standing on a log next to water in a woodland scene. The piece was originally painting by Lee LeBlanc for the South Carolina migratory waterfowl hunting and conservation stamp, SC1981. This limited print is signed by the artist on the print, and stamp, and is numbered 3888/4500. The third piece is a limited print of an original painting by Michael Sieve and shows three Canadian geese flying over a marshy field with another flock in the background. This is an Oregon First of State duck print, 1984 that is signed by the artist and numbered 4687/11,825. This piece includes the original purchasing reciepts and communications indicating it was purchased for $155 in 1984 from Marsh & Field Wildlife Galleries. All three of the pieces in this collection show the stamp that the print represents, and each is professionally framed and show in great condition overall.
