Alex Stepney's EPNS 1970 F.A. Cup third place tankard inscribed THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION CHALLENGE CUP COMPETITION, THIRD PLACE, SEASON 1969-70, 12cm high Provenance: Graham Budd Auctions, Sporting Memorabilia, 2nd November 2004, Lot 32  At the start of the 1970s it was decided to replace the traditional eve-of-final England v Young England matches by holding a third-place play-off between the losing semi-finalists. The idea was originally quite well supported but was dropped after just five seasons, making these tankard presentations quite rare. Manchester United's Alex Stepney played in the first of these occasions in 1970. The game was played at Highbury with United beating Watford 2-0 in front of 15,000 supporters. Brian Kidd scored both goals.

Lot 450

A letter written to a supporter from the mother of David Pegg shortly after the Munich disaster accompanied by a Manchester United postcard, an individual picture of the great player and a picture taken from a periodical signed by David Pegg in pen across his image  with the letter thanking the young disabled fan for their patience following their letter to her son requesting a signed photograph. The letter is hand written on the back of the original written request in blue ink and it was originally fixed in a scrap book and there is cellotape from that time still attached and the document has been folded.  Possibly one of the most poignant of football related correspondence you could possibly imagine, the original request from the father was sent to the Pegg household nr Doncaster on December 18th 1957 and seemingly down to the sheer number of such requests was still not answered by that fateful day on February 6th 1958 when he lost his life on the runway at Munich, the youngest to lose his life of the 23 members of the Reds party, one of the saddest days in the history of the game, a message spelt very clearly as Jesse, his mother, signs it as "David's sorrowful Mother", wishing that the child "hurries up and gets better", a selfless thought at a time of great personal tragedy.  Mrs Pegg passed away in 2006.

CERTIFICATE FOR KILLING GAME 1821

Lot 204

A copper-gilt-mounted Meissen porcelain rectangular snuff-box and cover, c.1755-60, the mount probably circa 1800, the cover and base painted to simulate playing cards enriched with meandering flowering branches, the cover interior with three gentlemen and two ladies observing a comet with telescopes, the comet centred by a playing card, 8.5cm wide overall Footnotes: Note: A box with similar decoration is illustrated by Barbara Beaucamp-Markowsky, Boîtes en Porcelaine, Fribourg, 1985, p. 305, no. 252, where the author attributes it to Fürstenberg.  The results of an X-Ray Florescence (XRF) test conducted on the present box in 2023 by Cranfield University are consistent with 18th century Meissen porcelain.  Beaucamp-Markowsky notes that the decoration is probably inspired by the card game comet, which was highly fashionable in the 18th century.  An old French card game, previously called Manille, it was renamed Comet after the appearance of Halley’s Comet in 1682.  A version of the game appeared in 1752, in which the 9 of diamonds was one of the ‘comets’. Condition Report: Overall this box is in very good condition. The mount probably dates to the end of the 18th century or the first years of the 19th century, so in all probability the box originally had a gold mount, possibly with a jewelled thumbpiece, which was removed and sold (this was common practice in the 18th century). There are some areas of minute wear to the underside, particularly to the corners this is to be expected and is minor.
