Chess.- Damiano de Odemeira. Libro da imparare giochare a scachi, collation: A-H8 64 numbered ff., roman letter, text in Italian and Spanish, large woodcut of two chess players on title and numerous woodcut diagrams in text, fore-margin of title trimmed close with loss of a hyphen and just shaving border of woodcut, 18th century French pale brown calf, spine gilt, edges gilt, slightly rubbed, head and foot of spine slightly chipped, joints partly cracked but firm, 8vo (140 x 91mm.), Rome, [c.1524].*** Extremely rare early edition of the first book to deal with the complete game and the first to give directions for playing without seeing the board.First printed in 1512, this is the second of several undated editions (1520–1540) described in detail by Dr A.van der Linde, Geschichte des Schachspiels, Berlin 1874, vol. I pp. 337–47. The woodcut on the title is the one used in Antonio Blado’s 1524 edition.Little is known about the author, a Portuguese apothecary, but his compilation is the first Italian work on modern chess and includes variations of Petrov’s defence, the gambit now called after him, the Giuoco Piano, and the Queen’s Gambit Accepted. Of particular interest are some of his pieces of advice: don’t play aimlessly, don’t play too fast; when you have a good move look for a better one; and use the ‘king’s leap’ (i.e. castling) for protection. Damiano is also the first to state that the board should be placed so that the lower right square is white. The section headed ‘Artede giocare alla mente’, beginning on H5 of this edition, is an explanation of how to play blindfold.Provenance: ‘De Truchis’(?) (16th century ownership inscription at foot of title and on final leaf); ‘Di Giulio . . .’, (obliterated seventeenth-century inscription on final leaf); Rev. George Innes (1759–1842, Master of Warwick School for half a century from 1792, with his bookplate); J. W. Chicco, ‘Le edizioni italiane del Libro di Damiano’, L’Esopo 22 (June 1984), pp. 46–58. Library Hub records copies of undated editions which may or may not be the present edition (Bodleian and British Library). * PETER HOWSON OBE (SCOTTISH b. 1958), THE PATRIOTS oil on canvas, signedframed image size 75cm x 60cm, overall size 95cm x 80cm Note: In the late 80s and early 90s, Howson embarked on a thematic exploration of what his biographer Robert Heller describes as his ‘Patriots’: the fascists, the football hooligans, the bully boys of the UK... “People who use brute force for brute ends”. It would go on to become the facet of his work for which he is arguably best known. The brutish and muscular ‘Game Boy’s’ raise their fists in a gesture pitched somewhere between a neo-Nazi salute and the celebratory stance of a football fan or roused member of a street mob. He sports the typical uniform of baseball cap and too-tight t-shirt, a nod of ridicule on Howson’s part, but with sinister “wrist gauntlets that furl out into a threatening combination of football scarf and leather strap”. The figure’s face is contorted into a mask of “swinish hate”, as Heller puts it.Condition of the picture is good overall, with no visible or known issues.
Janice Walton (British) - Untitled - Still life with statue head, a violin and a bow 2000 Oil on canvas painting. Signed bottom right. Framed. Measures approx. 86cm x 100cm (34" x 39.5") Janice Walton is a Devon based artist, trained at Dundee's Duncan of Jordanston College and at Edinburgh Art College. Her unique style has developed over the years, rich in atmosphere, merging imagination with reality. The work encapsulated in her website covers her up to the minute portrait / figurative, scenic, seascape, wildlife and commissions portfolio. Her commissions include a large six panel installation at the Burgh Island Hotel in Devon, a wonderful Art Deco Hotel. The Wildlife gallery is drawn from her South African experiences in game parks, where she spends part of the year painting and sketching. Her life and portrait work has evolved the human form using line supported by colour. The result is a fragmented image held together with accurate observation and true perspective. Janice's scenic and seascape work embraces new techniques and styles using oil on canvas and pastel on glass paper. Walton's work continues to "push the boundaries" as her work aims to create a vision beyond realism. This lot is also sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.
Richard Thomas Moynan RHA (1856 - 1906) Boy on a Swing (1890) Oil on canvas, 35.5 x 25cm (14 x 10") Signed and dated 1890Provenance: Private Collection, DublinThis oil on canvas painting entitled Boy on a Swing (1890) is fresh to the market. It has been hidden away in a private collection for the past fifty years. The painting is in its original gold exhibition frame and it is signed and dated by the artist. The letters RHA accompanies the signature and that dates the work to the latter half of 1890. This was an important year in the painter’s life as on the 18th of July 1890 he gained full membership of the Royal Hibernian Academy, Ireland’s elite society of professional artists. Moynan became an Associate of the Royal Hibernian Academy on the 18th of October 1889 and nine months later he was elevated to full membership. This unusually rapid promotion was a key feature of Moynan’s artistic career. He was 24 when he first embarked on his artistic training, as he had previously studied for the medical profession. However, from his commencement in art-school he constantly won awards for his drawing and painting, including the Taylor and the Cowper prizes. He concluded his Irish art-education by achieving the prestigious Albert Prize for the best picture shown in the Royal Hibernian Academy by a student. The painting was entitled The Last of the 24th at Isandula (1883). Gaining this award allowed him to travel to study under Karl Verlat at the Academy in Antwerp. Six months later he was the first Irishman to achieve the premier place for painting from the living model in an international competition called the Concours. He later travelled on to Paris where at the Academy Julian he was frequently placed first in drawing, painting and composition.Moynan began work on Boy on a Swing (1890) with a meticulous figure drawing executed in his careful academic style. A shy smile illuminates the child’s features as he expertly brings the swing to a halt by extending his left arm. The detailed rendering of the boy’s portrait contrasts with the artist’s animated treatment of the landscape as Moynan confidently employs broad brush-strokes to portray the lush rural setting. This is not an affluent child playing on a swing in his own garden. The boy’s raggy dress and bare feet suggest a rare treat when he was given unexpected access to a swing.Children were a constant source of pleasure and inspiration for the artist. He painted wonderfully intimate images of his own daughter, Eileen Norah and his son, Richard. Many of his large genre pieces featured children at play. Titles such as The Village Pump (1890), The Tug of War (1890), The See Saw (1891), Invitation to Go Haymaking (1892), A Travelling Show (1892), Ball in the Cap, (1893) and The Game of Marbles (1893), all depict groups of children in a village street or in a garden setting. The psychologist, Jean Piaget viewed play as being integral to the development of a child’s intelligence and social skills. Moynan’s sketchbooks in the National Gallery of Ireland illustrate his close observation of children engaging in recreational activities. Indeed, these sketchbooks demonstrates that he explored three different compositions before settling on the final narrative for his popular Leixlip street scene, Military Manoeuvres (1891), NGI Collection. This work was painted within six months of Boy on a Swing. While Military Manoeuvres tells the story of a large group of children with make-shift musical instruments pretending to be a military band, the subject draws the viewer into the excitement of the children’s game. Boy on a Swing is a much smaller and more focused composition yet this painting generates a similar effect. The child has an impish quality and he is clearly aware of his good fortune in trying out the make-shift swing. Dr. Maebh O’Regan
