Pieter Brueghel d. Literatur: Klaus Ertz, Pieter Brueghel d. J., Die Gemälde mit kritischem Oeuvrekatalog, 2 Bde. Lingen 2000, Klaus Ertz und Christa Nietze.Ertz, Jan Brueghel d. Ä. Die Gemälde mit kritischem Oeuvrekatalog, 4 Bde. Lingen 2008-10. (1360401) (11)Pieter Brueghel the Younger,ca. 1564 Brussels – 1637/38 AntwerpPEASANTS FIGHTING OVER A GAME OF CARDSOil in glazing technique on panel.41.7 x 58.4 cm.Accompanied by an expert’s report by Dr Klaus Ertz, Lingen, dated 2 January 2023. The style and concept of the depiction clearly show that the painting is based on a work by his father, Pieter Brueghel the Elder (1525 – 1569). It is not uncommon in the family tradition for the son to adopt motifs by his father. Characteristic of Brueghel I’s approach to painting is the close-up view of the figures, with groups of figures often filling the entire picture format. This is also the case in the painting on offer for sale here and adds special appeal to the comic-realistic subject. The subject of the painting was already very successful during Pieter Brueghel the Elder’s career and was circulated in an engraving by Lucas Vorstermann (1595 – 1675). The painting on offer for sale here is also based on this. A comparison of the known versions shows significant differences in the details. Pieter Brueghel II himself created 20 versions. As can be seen from the enclosed expert’s report, the works before 1616 can be distinguished from those after. The closeness to a work held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which is dated after 1616, is apparent.
