CRICKET: A good and unusual set of twelve vintage signatures by a ‘country house’ XI and official on an attractive red and blue thin bordered oblong 8vo sheet of feint ruled paper, comprising W. G. Grace (1848-1915, England & Gloucestershire etc.), Charles Robson (1859-1943, England, Middlesex & Hampshire), Cyril T. A. Wilkinson (1884-1970, Gentlemen of England & Surrey, also an Olympic Gold medal winner, 1920), Robert Hedderwick (1886-1941, Marylebone CC), Ernest C. Kirk (1884-1932, Surrey), H. D. G. Leveson Gower (1873-1954, England, Oxford University & Surrey), Arthur Jones (1872-1914, England, Cambridge University & Nottinghamshire), Harry Bush (1871-1942, Surrey), Jack Hobbs (1882-1963, England & Surrey), Joe Hardstaff Sr. (1882-1947, England & Nottinghamshire), John Gunn (1876-1963, England & Nottinghamshire) and the female scorer Ethel M. Lowndes. All have signed with their names alone in bold, dark fountain pen inks. A rare grouping of signatures including several England Captains. VG Whilst not exhaustive, our research would seem to indicate that the present team, presumably captained by Grace, did not participate in a first class match but were instead chosen to play in a country house game in around 1908 (Wilkinson had made his debut for the Gentlemen of England in the same year).  Provenance: The original collector noted that the present signatures were acquired from the personal collection of Cyril Wells (1871-1963) English Cricketer & Rugby Footballer who played for Cambridge University, Surrey and Middlesex and was also a housemaster and cricket coach at Eton College.

The book details the Maharajah of Cooch Behar's hunting adventures between 1871 and 1907 and is accompanied by a variety of newspaper clippings from the period detailing information regarding the Maharajah, including various philanthropic endeavours, and is also accompanied by an assortment of personal correspondence between the Maharajah and Mr St. John Kneller describing various aspects of life of the period Provenance: Research would indicate that Henry St. John Kneller was the tutor of the Maharajah of Cooch Behar, and a guardian to the Maharajah's two sons.
