THREE NEWCASTLE UNITED F.C. TEAM PHOTOGRAPHS, dating from 1933-34, 1934-35 and 1936-37, along with a letter from manager of Newcastle United F.C. to James McMenemy dated 1931, and a scrap from the United News and Programme dated 1932 Note: Each of these team photographs includes a young Harry McMenemy, the latest of the three illustrating Harry as Captain of the squad, flanked by Chairman and Vice Chairman of Newcastle United. The letter which accompanies this lot provides a great insight into Harry's strong start with the club, as then manager Andy Cummingham sends news of the young player's debut match to the McMenemy family back in Cambuslang. In strong praise, Cunningham writes 'Your boy Harry made his debut on Saturday for us at Grimsby, and I want to congratulate you now on your lad. He played a delightful game, and was the most unconcerned member of our party. We asked a big thing of him, and he did not fail in his test. I am confident he will do big things in football.'

Whilst the match ended in a gruelling 6-9 defeat, this jersey is somewhat unique as the sleeves are cut (one shorter than the other). They were cut prior to the game to try and prevent illegalities occurring in the front row during the fixture.

A lady observes, a small boy sprawls on the grass to the side, and two men are present in the background. Outside a house to the right, a table is laid with refreshments. A Large Asymmetrical Chinese Lacquer Fan, the monture of wood well painted in black lacquer with gold detail, each guard with a figure, the elongated gorge featuring five more figures and a small building within a garden. Both sides are similar but one has a floral border, the other features butterflies. The double paper leaf, dark in shade, features to one side a pink bird, perched on a slender bough covered with pink flowers, smaller birds, this central feature being bordered with further pink flowers and leaves. A similar scene on the verso includes insects amongst the flowers. Together with A Mandarin Fan, the double paper leaf illustrated with domestic or familial scenes, some figures playing a ball game, others holding fixed and folding fans, and on one side, what appears to be a dog kennel. Applied ivory faces. Mounted on wood sticks lacquered in black and painted in gold, the designs slightly different to the norm, with bands of flowers and feathers (2). The first fan is quite subdued and has some rubbing to the leaf folds. The verso with flowers has damage to the leaf. The Mandarin fan has splits and some loss to the leaf. Rubbing to most folds.
A Mid-18th Century Chinese Fan with Carved Export Monture, Qing Dynasty, the guards carved in sections on a minute scale, mainly with flowers. The gorge is carved in bands of different designs in geometric fashion. The double paper leaf, découpé, is painted with very naturalistic flowers in good colour, to include sunflowers, pansies, roses and daisies, poppies, ranunculi, and a passionflower, with butterflies arriving from the left. The verso is painted in a similar fashion with moths, heartsease, honeysuckle and soft fruits. Bears a previous auction label dated 21st October 1970. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Together with Another Ivory Fan With Chinese Export Monture, Qing Dynasty, figures and buildings on the guards and a very stylised and geometric design in bands and columns, a central oval with entwined initials. Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm; and A Third 18th Century Ivory Fan, with birds and flowers carved to the upper guards, the gorge with regular carved and pierced design formed by seven shaped and pierced bands. The double leaf features an outdoor gathering in Chinoiserie style, a meeting of generations, with an elderly man at rest, holding a large fixed fan and perhaps a scroll, watching a younger man contemplating a board game, seated at a low table with stylised porcelain flower vase. To the right, perhaps his wife, with two young children, the lady with fixed fan in hand. To the far right, a crane partaking of the orange fruits of a bush on rocky outcrop. The verso is painted with a simple gnarled tree with several colourful blooms. Guard length approx. 11.25 inches or 28.5cm (3) . The first fan upper guard is slightly warped. Losses and tears to some of the découpage. The second fan has 4 major splits to the leaf, all holding, some by virtue of some restoration seen on the verso. The third fan lacks the tip of the upper guard. Fan three has a crisp leaf but some repairs to the bottom left corner. The upper guard is fitted with an old white metal repair plate at the shoulder. Above that, another break is holding with glue. The upper section of the lower guard has an un-repaired break.

In 1862 Brown completed one of his most important paintings "Curling - A Scottish game at Central Park" (MFA Houston), and whilst working on the commission met William Brand who was to become an important patron. It was Brand who commissioned "Claiming the Shot: After the Hunt in the Adirondacks" (Detroit Institute of Arts) and can be seen standing centrally in the composition. To the far left of the group stands the young boy from our study, holding his quarry. Brown painted a study of William Brand (private collection, USA) and it has been argued that the sitter in our painting could be one of Brand's sons.
