Matthew J. Pitts Little Kniffenberg, 2021 Acrylic and Gesso on Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Matthew J Pitts studied Fine Art Painting at Norwich School of Art and Design and is a now based in St Leonards-on-sea, on the south coast of England. His work is in private collections in the UK, Europe, Switzerland, Australia, and the US. Pitts creates work with a warm and open character that explores the formal qualities of painting and pictorial space - composition, shape, line and colour. "Many things influence my paintings and there is no hierarchy: bad jokes, Tintoretto, a dripping tap - it's all fair game and welcomed in equally. The paintings exist as objects in their own right and there is no hidden message or agenda. They are a collection of humble materials that provide a record of endeavour at a particular moment in time. In many ways painting can seem a selfish pursuit, but like many others I have a desire to create and I am drawn to the physical process of painting. I create work in an attempt to better understand the parameters of painting and in turn, better understand the world around me and my place within it. I hope that there is generosity to be found in the images that I make and that viewing them and living with them can be a positive experience." Through their inherent simplicity and economy of visual language I hope the paintings invoke a sense of play and mystery.

My paintings contend with the sensations, rhythms and mental states experienced during long periods of time spent swimming across a body of water such as a lake or a river. Because a lack of movement can bring on death, swimming uniquely positions itself as a way to confront one's own mortality. A mental game is played to fight off fears of failure and the desire to survive is expressed at every stroke. The "Mad Cap Swimmers" are a group of women. They are the joining of forces that together are stronger than the sum of their parts. The water begins to rise and the swimmers are ready. They have been training for the challenge ahead. Their goal is an unknown place - an ambiguous landscape that is in view but just out of reach.

Una Ursprung White Tulip, 2021 Watercolour and Acrylic Spray on Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Una Ursprung's work is filled with mountains, forests, trees, and flowers. Born in Taipei, the artist has spent much of her life between Taiwan, France, and Switzerland, constantly refreshing her appreciation for sprawling natural landscapes. In these countries, Ursprung enjoyed pastoral, tranquil lifestyles which have inspired her sublime, airy works. Her canvases are dual-layered: a highly realistic natural background is superimposed by a layer of abstract detail, created using oils or acrylic spray paint. Sometimes these abstract details look like pastel oil spills; large, colourful shapes pooling on the surface. At other times, the marks made by the artist are shorter, finer lines, more like microscopic images of bacteria. The artist refers to this layer as a way to capture pollution, whether it be the man-made variety or the fleeting objects in the air, like dust, insects, or leaves, as in her forest sketches. These shapes are trapped in suspension, freezing the moment in front of us and immortalising the ever-chang-ing natural landscape. The spray-painted layer adds to the atmosphere of her landscapes, making them seem deeper and more real, while paradoxically appearing to be flat. The spray
is applied with a loose control, matching the artist's mission to depict, rather than conquer, the landscapes she shows. While Ursprung captures a moment in nature, the contrast of her two layers (one conventional and naturalistic, one wild and abstract) reminds us
that the natural world remains elusive. Unlike traditional landscape painters of the past, Ursprung does not pretend to have mastered her scenes, rather she shows them as ever-changing, unconquerable scenes deserving of our awe. These paintings are conceptually more complex than
a quick once-over viewing would suggest: they're not landscapes interrupted by separate, abstract motifs, they're a completed whole, made up by a balance of the two styles. Ursprung has found a way to harmonise the two artistic approaches that appeal to her most and, by combining the abstract with the realistic, challenges us with a version of nature that is both tangible and splendid. Wedgwood 19th century Majolica large game dish with lid: Decorated all over with game and floral designs. The piece has a small chip and firing fault to underside edge, the tureen has various hairlines in the body, visible from the inside, together with staining and crazing. Non of the hairlines extend to an edge, nor is the stability of the piece compromised. Glaze losses to the majority of the rim of the tureen. The extreme bottom left and right of the base have chips, one side minor, the other more significant. There is localised glaze/paint loss around the body of the piece. Despite the above condition comments, the piece is solid, nicely coloured and displays very well. Impressed Wedgwood to base. Measures 34.5cm x 23cm x 20.5cm high approx.
