A London 1908 Olympic Games gold winner's medal presented to Patrick Brennan captain of the Canadian lacrosse team, gold, designed by Bertram MacKennal, the obverse with two young women crowning a victorious athlete with a laurel wreath, the reverse with St. George, patron Saint of England, slaying the dragon This was lacrosse's second and final appearance at an Olympic Games following its introduction at St Louis in 1904. South Africa withdrew from the London Games leaving just Great Britain and Canada to compete in the gold medal match. The match was played at the White City Stadium and Canada won the game 14-10 to claim gold. At the turn of the century, Paddy Brennan was already established as one of the top amateur lacrosse players with the Shamrock Lacrosse Club of Montreal, Quebec. By 1904 he was being offered opportunities to turn professional, but refused them all. He was therefore able to participate in the trials for what would become Canada's first truly national amateur lacrosse delegation and was selected not only to travel with them to the 1908 Summer Olympics, but to act as a captain. His amateur status also meant, however, that he had to work as a businessman outside of lacrosse, and he his presence on the team was at times sporadic. Work pressures eventually led him to announce his retirement in May of 1909. In 1912, however, he returned to the Shamrocks when the National Lacrosse Union voted to reinstate the role of the field captain, and the Shamrocks' president refused to take on the role himself. He even played in one more game with the team in July 1915 and scored a goal. Shortly thereafter he left the sport for over a decade, but by the late 1920s he had renewed his interest and began to work to raise its popularity. Paddy Brennan has been attributed as the inventor of indoor box lacrosse, a modern version of the game introduced in Canada during the 1920s and 30s. Brennan was said to get annoyed by the constant slowing of play from balls going out of bounds in the field game, and began experimenting with indoor games at the Mount Royal Arena, Montreal, during the early 1920s. He also served as the coach of Montreal's St. Willbrord lacrosse team before taking up that role with the professional Montreal Maroons in the early 1930s. In addition, he held the position of the Maroons' manager and accepted the role of honorary coach with the Verdun Athletic Club's amateur lacrosse squad. He remained active in promoting the sport at all levels until the 1950s, when he began to experience heart troubles, and he died in May of 1961. Patrick "Paddy" Brennan was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1966. Provenance: By family descent

Stanley Matthews's 1953 F.A. Cup Final winner's medal, in 9ct. gold, the reverse inscribed THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION, CHALLENGE CUP, WINNERS, in original case; sold with a Sotheby's Olympia auction catalogue 21st September 2001, with the medal featuring on the front cover (2) In Coronation Year of 1953 and after 21 years as a professional footballer, Stanley Matthews finally won the F.A. Cup medal that had eluded him for so long. After a dramatic match in which Blackpool defeated Bolton Wanderers 4-3, Stanley Matthews was presented with this, the most fabled medal in the long and romantic history of the Football Association Challenge Cup by Her Majesty The Queen. Twice in three years (1948 and 1951) Matthews was on the losing side in classic final encounters, and with 55 minutes of the 1953 final elapsed, when Bolton were 3-1 ahead, there could have been few in the country who believed his quest for a winner's medal would be resolved on that afternoon. Then the 100,000 crowd packed into Wembley, with countless more at home watching the first televised broadcast of the Cup final by the B.B.C., witnessed the 'Wizard of Dribble' turn the game around with a vintage right- wing display. First, an outswinging centre to the far post deceived the Bolton keeper, Hanson, whose fumbled catch dropped in the path of Stan Mortensen to score. With a minute of the game left, yet another Matthews' centre found Mudie, who was fouled close to the penalty box. From a rehearsed free kick routine, Mortensen rescued the game for Blackpool crashing home the equaliser. In injury time Matthews embarked on yet another run, and with a trademark jink to the outside and a cut to the inside he fooled Banks, rolled the ball past Barrass, and crossed for Perry to score a last- gasp winner. The world's most famous footballer playing on the game's most famous stage had his medal. Almost lost in the excitement of the occasion was Stan Mortensen's achievement of becoming the first player to score a hat-trick in a Cup final, although not to Matthews. With the endearing modesty that characterised the great man, he always asserted that the game should be known as the 'Mortensen Final'. This unforgettable match, however, will always be remembered as the Stanley Matthews Cup Final. Provenance: Consigned by Stanley Matthews junior to Sotheby's Olympia football memorabilia auction, 21st September 2001. Purchased by the present vendor.

Gordon Banks's England 1970 World Cup cap, inscribed WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, JULES RIMET CUP, 1970, ROMANIA, BRAZIL, CZECHOSLOVAKIA Provenance: Bought at Christie's March 2001. Gordon Banks's career highlight was of course his part in helping England to victory at the 1966 World Cup. Of all the England players, however, he is perhaps best remembered for his performance at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. During the group game v Brazil , playing at pace, Brazil were putting England under enormous pressure and an attack was begun by captain Carlos Alberto who sent a low ball down the right flank for the athletic Jairzinho to latch on to. The Brazilian winger sped past left-back Terry Cooper and crossed the ball into the six-yard box, where Pele connected with a powerful header to send the ball low towards the right-hand corner of the goal. In the knowledge that his header was placed to perfection, Pelé immediately shouted "Gol!" The split-second incident only allowed Banks time for one conscious thought - that the shot was impossible to catch, and the only way to prevent Pelé from following up on the rebound would be to parry the ball over the bar. The ball bounced two yards in front of the goal-line, and Banks managed to make contact with the ball with the fingers of his right hand, and rolled his hand slightly to angle to ball over the crossbar. He landed in the inner netting of the goal, and knew he had saved the ball after witnessing Pelé's reaction. Banks himself landed in the inner netting of the goal Pelé has been quoted, as have numerous journalists and pundits, as describing the save as the greatest in the history of the game. Banks would later say "They won't remember me for winning the World Cup [in 1966], it'll be for that save. That's how big a thing it is. People just want to talk about that save."
