William Davis (1812-1873) Carving his Name Signed, oil on canvas, 26cm by 23.5cmProvenance: Sothebys Victorian Paintings, Drawings and Watercolours, November 12, 1992, Lot 73Relined, cleaned and re-varnished. The paint is slightly thin and the weave of canvas is more apparent in some areas. Slight stretcher shadow, mostly left-hand side upright to a lesser extent lower edge. Light surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Essentially square patch of overpainting to the right side of the young boys forehead, approx 1cm by 1cm (all be it slightly irregular shape) Further sporadic retouches along his left eyebrow and the lower part of his right cheek. Odd possible sporadic retouch/strengthening within the darker tones of the flora and foliage. Canvas slightly buckled in places. Odd area of fine stable cracqulure, otherwise in a good state of preservation. Please contact the department for further information.

Continental School, probably North European (18th century) Portrait of a young gentile boy standing wearing a green frock coat, a yellow waistcoat, a white shirt with frills to the cuffs, a pair of fine yellow boots, and a powdered wig, resting on a cane in his right hand, with an embellished tricorn hat placed on a table to his left Oil on canvas, 102cm by 70.5cmIn fully and heavily restored condition. Fairly stiffly relined, cleaned and re-varnished. Surface somewhat flattened as a result of the restoration process. Slight buckle to lower right-hand corner. Small amount of fairly minor surface scratches within upper right-hand corner, see image. Areas of minor and sporadic rubbing to edges, especially upper edge above standing young gentlemen's head. A good amount of fairly consistent retouching, repairs and restoration throughout the painting but briefly summarised as various areas throughout the background most consistently right-hand side, upper left-hand corner and left-hand side background with some slightly more defined areas of retouching to old flaked paint, right-angle likley old tear with associated retouching within background in line with the curls of the young gentlemen's left-hand side wig approx 3cm on each arm. The restoration and overpainting becomes more consistent within the background below the young gentlemen's right-hand elbow. Further varied patches to the foreground including long line of strengthening along the left-hand side of his cane and further areas of retouching with more notable patch across part of his right foot and upwards into the background. Consistent patch of overpainting in the foreground below the table top against the right-hand side edge which covers roughly 40% of that area. Further notable patches of retouches broadly within lower 25%. Consistent retouching and overpainting to his coat, left-hand side. Various strengthening throughout his waistcoat with numerous patches of retouching and later paint possibly of a different date. Notable patch of restoration and overpainting within lower right of gentlemen's wig extending down far right of his forehead through his left-hand temple intercepting his cheek, his jaw and sporadic retouches to his right-hand side of nose extending down through lip and chin with more sporadic retouches to forehead and rest of wig. Fairly consistent retouches and infilling to both hands and a good amount of the red ribbon worn at his right wrist. Further notable area of consistent overpainting in the space between his left hip and the hat extending across the table. Please see some illustrative images. Fairly stiffly relined cleaned and re-varnished. Some general flattening to the surface as a result of the restoration process although some areas retain a fairly good level of impasto e.g. white collar, shirt frill? and some of the flesh. Paint also slightly thin in some areas e.g. background. Light surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Areas of mostly fine stable cracquelure. The cracquelure and separation is somewhat more pronounced within the black areas below the left-hand side collar, see image. Canvas slightly adrift of frame with some minor rubbing to outer edges. Fairly minor retouches towards upper left-hand corner, sporadically and finely along upper edge and slighly more consistently to upper right-hand corner. sporadic retouches to left-hand side edge and more consistently and scattered to lower left-hand corner. Slightly more pronounced retouches to lower right-hand corner. Effectively two areas of more concentrated retouching and strengthening to the lower right-hand side edge of his left-hand side lapel. Strengthening to the back of the white shirt frill/cravat. Scattered and fairly fine retouches elsewhere to the lower section and upper background. Some possible general strengthening of a different date, background? More concentrated patch of retouching and strengthening above his left shoulder along the right hand side edge and approx 5cm by 7cm overall all be it an irregular shape. Slight stretcher shadow in parts and some areas of retouches visible on close inspection e.g. top left-hand corner edges, area behind and around his left-hand shoulder etc. Otherwise in a stable and presentable state of preservation.

^ A George I Figured Walnut and Featherbanded Bureau Cabinet, early 18th century, the double moulded canopy top above later bevelled glass mirror doors enclosing a fitted interior, adjustable shelves, pigeon holes and small drawers, with pull-out candle slide below, the fall front enclosing a sliding well and fitted interior above two short over two long oak-lined drawers with engraved brass handles and escutcheons, on a moulded base with block feet and a wavy shaped apron104cm by 60cm by 228cmWith later mirror plates. Cosmetically good, however there are some variations in colour. The front is slightly faded but uniform compared to the side panels (see further images). Some small veneer losses. Various natural(?) splitting as photographed. The hinges have been replaced to the fall. There are some patch repairs around the escutcheons to the upper section.

A large patch of overpainting to just below centre of canvas around the trunk of the central tree and extending into the foliage above and right of this approx 8cm by 6cm, see images. Other smaller areas of retouching to the tree at the centre left tree and patches within the foreground. Other more minor and sporadic retouches elsewhere.

There is an amount of underpainting with visible brushmarks in incongruous directions to surface paint, more notably across the left-hand vessel. Some of the darker tones denoting the rigging of the boats, the general outline and darker tones and shadows on the right-hand side may have received a little strengthening. This is not especially evident under a UV light. Odd isolated patch of fine stable cracquelure. Otherwise in a good and highly presentable state of preservation.

Frame rubbing to edges, most notably along top edge and lower left edge. Sporadic areas of infilling/overpainting across canvas, most notably two areas corresponding to the patch repairs. Areas of retouching to the foliage in the upper right corner, small area in between the frame and the thatch roof, lower left corner next to the signature, an area in between the woman's outstretched arm and body and other smaller less notable areas elsewhere. Otherwise in a broadly good state of preservation.

Small 4to (178 x 142mm). Additional hand-coloured engraved allegorical title, printed title with hand-coloured ornament, 66 FINE HAND-COLOURED EMBLEMATIC ILLUSTRATIONS, text in quatrains above each illustration in Dutch and below in French, unpaginated (light stain to the page with the tenth illustration, occasional light mainly marginal spotting and staining). Contemporary vellum, spine with black morocco lettering-piece gilt (bowed, patch of wear and circular stain to upper cover, with some other lighter staining). Provenance: William Cowburn (armorial bookplate); H. Drury, Harrow, 1818 (very small inscription at head of front free endpaper, with faint pencil signature). The copy in the British Library, also printed in Haarlem, is speculatively dated "[1685?]" and records only an engraved title page with no mention of illustrations. No other copies are recorded pre-dating 1706. The author of the verses is unknown. RARE. Not in Brunet or Lewine.

A GOOD CASED .450 CALIBRE PERCUSSION PRESENTATION RIFLE BY JAMES WILKINSON & SON, 30inch sighted damascus barrel engraved with the manufacturer's details and fitted with blued rear leaf and ladder sights, border engraved case colour hardened breech with platinum vent, stamped with the serial no. 5939, border and finely scroll engraved bolted lock signed WILKINSON & SON, half stocked with crisply chequered fore-end and wrist, border and scroll engraved steel mounts, the butt with good traces of original blued finish, the trigger guard with fine pineapple finial and the tang engraved with the serial no. 5959, brass topped wooden ramrod, contained in its green baize lined case, with maker's trade label and complete with planished tin rifle flask, large cap tin with label, oil bottle, ball mould, flanged bullet mould, plain hollow back bullet mould, patch tin, wad tin, two-piece cleaning rod, secondary loading rod, printed loading instructions, turnscrew and key to the case, this of brass mounted mahogany construction, the lid inset with a large circular presentation plaque, PRESENTED BY THE British Government TO M: CHARLES LOUIS BENJAMIN GABRIE in acknowledgement of important Services rendered on occasion of the Wreck of the British Store Ship Enchantress FEBRUARY 20.21. 1861. Works well on FC and HC with a clean bright bore.

A .451 CALIBRE PERCUSSION WHITWORTH MILITARY MATCH RIFLE, 33inch sighted barrel fitted with rear match ladder sights, adjustable fore-sight, blade lacking, engraved WHITWORTH PATENT, the left side of the breech with the serial no. 377, this repeated inaide the patch box cover, bolted lock engraved WHITWORTH RIFLE CO. MANCHESTER and with the wheat sheaf emblem at the tail, full stocked with chequered fore-end and wrist, regulation steel mounts, the left side of the butt with large vacant white metal presentation escutcheon. Good on FC and HC with clean bore. Generally a very crisp gun with some original colour - nipple, barrel tang screw and loading rod lacking.

A GOOD SCARCE .700 CALIBRE PERCUSSION BRUNSWICK RIFLE, this Belgian Contract Russian example by P. J. Malherbe of Liege, serial no. 872 and with 30inch sighted browned damascus barrel fitted with bayonet bar and pivoting rear sight, border engraved signed back action lock, full stocked with regulation brass mounts, the wrist with escutcheon bearing the cypher of Nicholas I, the butt plate tang with Imperial eagle and serial no. 872, the inside of the patch box cover stamped 9748, one interior compartment with inked no.69, steel ramrod. See the National Army Museum accession no. NAM. 1962-06-28-1 for an identical example captured at Bomarsund during the Crimean War.

DAW, 24.25inch sighted browned damascus barrel fitted with rear ladder sights, engraved with the manufacturer's details on the sighting flat, border and scroll engraved breech and tang, platinum vent, the border and finely scroll engraved signed lock rounded and contoured to match the rounded half stock, chequered fore-end and wrist, border and scroll engraved steel mounts, serial no. 3064, the butt with foliate engraved patch box, the oval white metal escutcheon engraved with a crest of a winged bird or phoenix emerging from a coronet, brass topped steel ramrod. Works crisply on FC and HC with a clean bore.

A CASED 32-BORE TWO-GROOVE PERCUSSION DOUBLE RIFLE BY PURDEY, serial no. 4862, for 1853, with twin-groove rifled browned 30in. damascus barrels, the top-rib with traces of signature only, long bead fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight with two additional folding leaves, scroll engraved rib-end, single platinum line interrupted by the rib at breech together with two engraved bands and platinum vents, fully engraved top-tang, border and scroll engraved bar-action locks signed 'PURDEY' (areas of shallow pitting and frosting), sliding safes forwards of the scroll engraved slab-sided dolphin headed hammers, chequered walnut half-stock, raised cheek-piece, crested iron patch-box to right hand side of butt (pitted), engraved and chequered iron heel-plate, iron trigger-guard bow with chequered tang spur and brass mounted mahogany matching number ramrod; together with a walnut case, partially relined in red baize, facsimile 'J. Purdey' trade-label and containing a leather-covered white metal topped James Dixon bag-shaped powder flask, a period cap-tin, various nipple-keys, a ball-mould numbered 5140 and marked to 'H. D. Ingilly' and sundry other accessories.

AN EXTREMELY RARE .177 WESTLEY-RICHARDS 'HIGHEST POSSIBLE CONCENTRIC' AIR-PISTOL, serial no. 1068, circa 1925, with 7 1/4in. concealed brass smooth-bore barrel, external sighted air-chamber of concentric spring-piston design (strong amount of original finish with a corrosion patch over the address) and stamped 'WESTLEY RICHARDS' "HIGHEST POSSIBLE" AIR PISTOL', together with 'PAT 178048-21' on the left hand side, blued open frame design with the cocking lever forming the trigger-guard, diminutive black hard rubber chequered grips, barrel assembly release catch and cocking assist lever mounted on the back-strap, good amount of finish throughout.
