Ayrton Senna's Australian Grand Prix 1993 Nacional baseball cap,gifted to Alan Read personally by Ayrton Senna at the Australian Grand Prix post race barbecue. This cap was worn by Senna on the podium (underneath the winner's cap) and at the at the post-race press conferences. This was to be Senna's 41st and final win in Formula 1 before his tragic death months later at Imola 1994. Sold together with an Adelaide GP pin badge, a pin badge of Senna's helmet, a 1993 Australian GP marshal pass with accompanying embroidered patch, an invitation to the post race barbecue (where the cap was gifted by Senna to Read), a photograph of Senna, Mansilla and Toledane, and a typed signed statement of authenticity. There are 19 signatures in silver marker on the black, 18 of which are on the black stripes plus Andy Cole who signed on the blue star logo. Each player / official has written their name in capitals underneath their signature. Very Good Working Order and generally Crisp Condition, retaining virtually all original finish (patch of rust staining on one barrel); in a fitted brass bound mahogany box with folding handle in the lid, containing 38 bore steel pincer mould, a turnscrew, modern copper flask, and key to the box. (21 x 28cm.) .* Provenance: Martel Maides Auctions, 7th April 2005, Lot 175 .** The English 1797 pattern, 40-gun frigate of the Channel blockade is firing a ranging shot at a French frigate making for port. French ships, when they broke out, carried no flags in an attempt to be mistaken for an English ship or merchantman. Believed painted 1805-1810.*** Condition: Scattered retouching across the panel. Larger patch top centre margin. No cracks or splits to the panel. Small blister to paint just to left of centre in sky. Some bitumisation to paint to the dark area of the sea at the lower margin. A Continental early 19th century mahogany demi-lune card table, the baize lined and feather banded top opening on a pull out centre back leg (lacks foot), over a shaped frieze and raised on square tapered legs with brass capped block feet, 34¾ x 13¾in. (88.25 x 35cm.), 30½in. (77.5cm.) high.. *Lacks foot from pull-out back leg (but brass capping is present). Top not warped but has some old large scratches. Patch of veneer damage and repair to front edge of top and veneer cracking & lifting behind this. Veneer chips and old repairs around hinge to frieze. Very original colour and surface but needs some restoration.
A Pakistani rug, 1st half 20th century, the central rectangular panel with two linked lozenge medallions with a repeating floral rosette border, on a dark blue and mid-brown boteh ground, on a gilt madder field with floral motifs and conforming ochre spandrels, with multiple boteh, floral meander and Herati style borders, 75½ x 50in. (191.75 x 127cm.).. *Good overall condition and good colours. Small 2 x 3in repaired patch to one corner. Approx. 40% of the edge border at one end has been damaged and the edge restitched. A few small stitched repairs to selvege at both sides.
A late George III cross banded mahogany serpentine sideboard, attributed to Gillows, inlaid with boxwood lines, the shaped top above a frieze drawer and shaped fluted apron flanked by deep drawers, one fitted with divisions for bottles, raised on fluted tapering legs headed by leaf capitals, 68½ x 24in. (175 x 61cm.), 37in. (94cm.) high.. * Provenance: Bonhams New Bond Street, Fine English Furniture, and Works of Art, 15th June 2011, Lot 163. Earlier: The Child Family, Colwinston House, South Glamorgan.. ** This piece is closely related to a design for a 'Side Board Table for Mr Stuart Johnson' in Gillows Estimate Sketch Books dated 25 November 1786 (folio 456, reel 344/93). The leaf carved capitals on the legs can be seen in a Gillows design for a card table dated February 1799 (folio 499, reel 344/93). . Very similar sideboards were sold at Sotheby's London, 20 November 2007, lot 140 (£29,300, including premium), Sotheby's London, 9 July 1999, lot 103 (£34,500 including premium) and Christie's, Simon Sainsbury, The Creation of an English Arcadia, lot 94 (£40,000, hammer price).. *Old shrinkage crack to LH side of top which has been wax filled and two other fine shrinkage cracks to centre of top. Centre drawer later baize lined. Small patch of very old damage to veneer to LH side of centre drawer, which has been wax filled and spot stained. Both deep drawers have similar old wax or tiny plugged holes aroound lock, probably from lock replacement at some time. Handles are later 19th century replacements (plugged holes from originals visible). A few minor veneer repairs and small repair to edge moulding at top of left front leg. No repairs to legs, structure appears very sound. Top has been repolished in the past 20-30 years
English School (late 19th century), Pair of Portraits of Terriers . oil on board, unsigned, modern reproduction frames . 9 x 12in. (22.8 x 30.5cm.). (2)* Both have been cleaned and revarnished in the last 20-30 years - on both, the vanrish has dulled and is streaky. Both have some minor retouches. The white dog has retouches in an oval shape around the margins from old framing in an oval mask. It also has a larger retouched patch at lower left. The brown dog has a retouched patch to the back of head (thumbnail size). Both paintings have security initials and a postcode to the upper left corner in invisible security pen - it is visible under UV.
