Lot 294

A rare Maynard Arms Company 1st Model .50 calibre percussion breech-loading carbine, marked 'Maynard Arms Co / Washington' and 'Manufactured by Mass Arms Co. Chicopee Falls' to either side of the frame, 20" barrel, of military configuration with fixed rear sight, further original adjustable sight behind the hammer, and a sling ring to the trigger plate tang, with original open primer roll, with patented dates 1845 - 1856 to patch box cover and up to December 1859 one paper to the interior, overall length 93cm sold with a spare barrel with matching serial 2037 (damage to part of pin on action)As used by the US Military during the Civil War. A substantial number of Confederate regiments were at least partially armed with 1st Model Maynard rifles and carbines during the Civil War, resulting in the guns (in both barrel lengths and calibres) being listed in the 1863 Confederate Ordnance Manual as standard-issue Confederate carbines. This is possibly one of those purchased by the state of Mississippi in late 1860. If the 1859 production ceased between serial numbers 1600 and 1900, and production reached 150 arms per month during the period from January 1860 to April 1861, arms within the serial numbers range from approximately 1-4100 could have seen Confederate military service.Condition:The serial number on the tape primer door is 2037, which matches the spare barrel. This would suggest the one currently not fitted is the original barrel. After disassembling the rifle, the barrel currently attached is numbered serial 2148. This is possibly therefore a slightly later marriage. The lever pivot pin is partially snapped (see images). There is also a spare loose unattached piece, unsure what or if it relates to. The action appears to be in working orderPlease see additional images
