Lot 145

A William & Mary walnut chest of drawers, with boxwood strung detail, fitted two short over three long drawers all with conforming stringing, supported by turned bun feet. 94 cm wide x 61 cm overall depth x 89 cm overall height. The chest has signs of historic wood worm but not to the point of structural infestation. The back boards have been replaced probably in the 1960s with hardboard the top is of good colour with the stringing intact and just a little damage to the rear corners of the return mouldings of the left hand side..The left hand side has a rather crude patch to the rear edge at the top.and an almost diagonal split where the boards were joined to make a wide board side. The right hand side is free from a similar split but has a crude patch to the back edge at the bottom. The onion feet are disproportionately small and on further investigation reveal signs of mechanised drive dogs from a modern lathe and the feet are too cylindrical to be old shrunken elliptical turnings. The top and bottom mouldings are straight grain rather than moulded cross grain on a pine or oak ground, and I suspect are old replacementsThe drawers are Ok and run as they should and are fitted with good almost convincing reproduction staple fixing bale handles The chest has probably been in the same family from its manufacture but has seen some crude running repairs to keep it in service.

The First and Second War group of seven awarded to Commander R. H. D. Lane, Royal Navy, a veteran of Dunkirk who commanded the destroyer Wryneck in the evacuation of Greece, and was among those lost when she was sunk by enemy aircraft in April 1941 - he was last seen sliding off a raft, badly wounded and covered in oil 1914-15 Star (S. Lt. R. H. D. Lane, R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (Lieut. R. H. D. Lane. R.N.); 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; War Medal 1939-45, with M.I.D. oak leaf; Coronation 1937, mounted as worn, good very fine and better (7) £500-£700 --- Importation Duty This lot is subject to importation duty of 5% on the hammer price unless exported outside the UK --- --- Robert Henry Douglas Lane, who was appointed a Midshipman in September 1913, was serving aboard the battleship H.M.S. Africa on the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914. Transferring to the Hindustan as an Acting Sub. Lieutenant in November 1915, another ship of the 3rd Battle Squadron, he afterwards completed his wartime service in destroyers, namely the Nonpareil and the Patriot, latterly as First Lieutenant. Remaining a regular between the wars, Lane gained advancement to Lieutenant-Commander in October 1925 and was serving as Naval Provost Marshal in Hong Kong on the renewal of hostilities. Returning to the U.K. in early 1940, he was given command of the ancient freighter Moyle, one of three blockships ordered to Dunkirk on the last night of the evacuation on 3-4 June 1940. Lane and his crew rammed her into the west pier and scuttled her, prior to becoming among the very last to be evacuated from the battered port. He was subsequently among those men mentioned in despatches in The London Gazette of 10 October 1940, for ‘good services when carrying out blocking operations in enemy occupied ports.’ In July 1940, Lane was appointed to the command of the destroyer Wryneck, in which ship he served with distinction in the Mediterranean, and more particularly during the evacuation of Greece. Having assisted in the withdrawal of troops from Megara on 25 July 1941, and in rescuing survivors from the lighter A.19, Lane was ordered to take the Wryneck on a similar mission two nights later. On this occasion, however, ‘tragedy began to pile on tragedy’, for Wryneck and her consorts departed Navplion at too late an hour to avoid enemy attention in the first hours of daylight. And at 7 a.m. 30 enemy dive bombers commenced a devastating attack on the Wryneck and the Diamond (another destroyer), in addition to the Dutch Slamat, the latter vessel being laden with evacuated troops. First to be sunk was the Slamat, the two destroyers moving in to pick up her survivors. Soon afterwards, and now with several hundred troops aboard, the Wryneck and Diamond similarly fell victim to a succession of heavy bombing attacks: ‘Wryneck, meanwhile, had been equally unfortunate. Taken unawares in the same way as Diamond, a bomb had struck the foc’s’le near ‘A’ gun, killing or wounding everyone at the gun, on the bridge and in the sick bay, shattering the stokers’ mess deck and killing numbers of stokers and soldiers. Another fell down the engine room hatch bursting all the steam pipes, and a third bomb struck aft setting an ammunition locker on fire. With the ship moving at about 18 knots, with a heavy growing list to port, an E.R.A. managed to open the safety valves; then, with others, he got a whaler away which was practically undamaged, and released the rafts before abandoning ship ...’ But, as confirmed in Greek Tragedy, worse was to follow in the water: ‘Where the destroyers had gone down a huge patch of dark brown oil spread like a pall over the blue water of the Gulf of Nauplia. And in it floated the torn corpses of the dead, wrecked and upturned boats, balks of timber, lifebelts, sodden loaves of bread, broken oars, rolled hammocks and shattered pieces of furniture. In it swam those who were still alive and those who were soon to die by drowning. Hundreds of men coated in oil. Men crying for help, coughing and retching to free their bursting lungs of the bitter crude oil that choked them. Men screaming in terror. Men praying to live. Men longing for death to release them from the agony of burning oil seeping into their wounds. Men clutching at chunks of wreckage that slipped from their grasp. Men of high courage, who without a thought for themselves, fought to save their wounded shipmates ... There were a number of rafts and Carley floats drifting in that growing patch of oil, and few of them carried survivors. On one of them was Commander Lane of the Wryneck, with two of his R.N.V.R. Sub. Lieutenants, Jackson and Griffiths, and his Midshipman, Peck. Able Seaman Taylor helped to haul them on to the raft. They were all badly wounded and coated in oil. For a little while they clung to the raft. As it rolled in the rising sea, they slipped off it, too weak to hold on any longer ...’ When at length a handful of Wryneck’s men were eventually picked up, the senior surviving rating was asked to complete a report. He ended it thus: ‘The men of the Wryneck wish me to add that we have lost a fine ship, fine officers and a magnificent Captain.’

[GILLRAY, James (1757-1815)]. A collection of 45 "suppressed" plates on 23 sheets, engraved by Hannah Humphrey after James Gillray, variously dated in the plates 1779-1804 [but re-issued by Henry G. Bohn c.1851], folio, red morocco portfolio, with catch.[GILLRAY, James (1757-1815)].  A collection of 45 "suppressed" plates on 23 sheets, etched and engraved by Hannah Humphrey after James Gillray, variously dated in the plates 1779-1804 [but re-issued by Henry G. Bohn c.1851]. (The first two plates spotted, some light mainly marginal spotting to the other plates.) Folio (640 x 480mm). Bound in a contemporary half red morocco and marbled portfolio, the spine elaborately decorated in gilt, with a simple metal catch (not a lock, hence not requiring a key) on the flap (extremities rubbed, patch of wear to lower board, some staining). "Gillray's most enduring work ... was done as a caricaturist, and as a caricaturist pure and simple he holds a foremost place in that division of English graphic art. Much of the intensity, the almost ferocious energy, of his satire is scarcely conceivable in these milder days, but, that admission made, it is impossible not to admire his inexhaustible fertility of fancy, the frequent grandeur of his conception, the reckless audacity of his attack, and his skill in selecting the vulnerable side of his victims" (DNB). After Gillray's decline into insanity and his eventual death, the original plates of his caricatures passed into the hands of his publisher and (reputedly) sometime "companion" Hannah Humphrey; on her death, they were purchased by Henry G. Bohn who published a selection of them in 1818 and a further issue, with descriptions by M'Clean, in 1830. In 1851 he issued a folio volume entitled The Works ... from the Original Plates, with the addition of many subjects not before collected which contained 582 plates - virtually Gillray's complete oeuvre - and at the same time he issued the present supplement, or companion volume, without a title page, of 45 "suppressed plates" which were considered too explicit for general circulation.

Rare and Historically Important WW2 Special Forces (Special Allied Airborne Reconnaissance Force) Operation Violet Military Medal Grouping Awarded to Sergeant Phillip Potter US Army O.S.S, George VI Military Medal (M.M) on ribbon with brooch pin, awarded to ‘SJT. P. B. K. POTTER. U.S. ARMY.’ Medal is also accompanied by a grouping of his original cloth insignia, which includes his very rare embroidered special forces (S.F) wing, 2x British airborne parachute qualification wings, parachute qualified ‘light bulb’ sleeve patch, sterling silver US army issue jump wings with pin back fitting and red on khaki ‘AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE’ shoulder title, plus other items of cloth insignia. Also with the grouping is a historically interesting original snapshot photograph album compiled by Sergeant Potter and assuming his brother Alan Potter during WW2. The album begins with images in 1943 when he first joined the services and then moves into basic training before quickly moving him into service in North Africa (Libya), then onto Italy before being moved to France, near Limoges, in summer (August 1944). Album has some excellent images from his time near Limoges, including a bridge blown up with the annotation below, ‘Bridge Blown by Creuse Maquis and Allied Agents’. Excellent large image of him and men from his unit wearing the Special Forces wings above British jump wings, stated ‘Before operations against Jerry in Chateauroux. Summer 1944 American Parachutists’. Image of a castle city of Carcassonne, where he states he met with allied agents. Images of battle damage German weapons, German officer POW’s and a large format image of ‘Allied Agents at ceremony of presentation of Croix de Guerre’. Album then has some pictures from Italy campaign at the same time, Summer 1944, these would appear to be taken by his brother Alan. Then more images in France, before moving back to London before Philip’s posting to the Far East in 1945. Album ends with images in Burma taken by Philip Potter and then a page taken by his brother, still in Italy, with images of Cassino (Monte Cassino). The album is well annotated and many of the images are extremely clear and interesting. Overall a superb grouping including a gallantry medal to a member of a very small Allied Special Forces unit. The recommendation for his Military Medal was by Brigadier J S Nichols D.S.O MC Commander SAARF, ‘HQ and HQ Det OSS, US ARMY Attached SAARF - 11121960 Sgt Philip B K POTTER. Sgt POTTER was the W/T Operator in Captain WARFIELD’s Team, one of the six Recce teams operating under my direct command which were dropped by parachute on the night 25/26 April 1945 near ALTENGRABOW P W CAMP Twenty miles EAST of MADGEBURG and fifteen miles behind the enemy lines. This team was dropped on a belt of trees in an area occupied by a German Division and fifteen miles away from the correct DZ. Sgt Potter recovered his W/T equipment and immediately got into communication with this Headquarters – although in imminent danger of capture by the enemy parties searching the area. Together with his team he then moved twenty miles through German Formations to the original target. During the whole of this time and in spite of the great danger and extreme hardships caused by lack of food, rain and cold, Sgt POTTER maintained his communications with complete success and transmitted valuable information. He also took considerable risks in recharging his batteries by a hand generator whilst surrounded by German Troops. I consider this NCO’s conduct outstanding.’ The Special Allied Airborne Reconnaissance Force (SAARF) was set up by the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) in February 1945. They were tasked with being dropped behind enemy lines near prisoner of war camps and slave labour camps to report on the conditions and to prevent atrocities being carried out by the retreating German forces etc. Other duties would involve the hunting down of possibly war criminals. The unit was only involved in one Airborne drop before the unit was disbanded. The unit consisted of just 96 Americans, these mostly came from the US equivalent of the SOE, the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) and members of the allied airborne divisions. Operation Violet, on 25th April 1945, was the code name for the SAARF operation to drop 6 multi-national teams at three different drop zones, to reach the German Prisoner of War camp XI A, near the village of Altengrabow. At the time the camp held some 60,000 allied prisoners of war. The six 3 person teams were to be parachute in, close to Altengrabow behind the German lines, drop 1 was a British team ‘Erasure’, commanded by SOE veteran Major Phillip Worrall and French team ‘Briefcase’ commanded by Pierre Cambon. Drop zone 2 was British team ‘Pennib’ under Major Forshall and US team ‘Cashbox’ under Captain Brown. The final drop zone, drop zone 3 was US team ‘Pencil’ led by Captain Warfield and French team ‘Sealingwax’. Sergeant Potter, was serving in the US team Pencil, as the wireless operator under Captain Warfield. Each drop zone was allotted one RAF transport aircraft to carry the two teams. The teams left from RAF Airfield Great Dunmow, Essex. The operation did not go smoothly to begin with, as the teams missed the drop zones and the heavy presence of German forces in the area resulted with many of the teams being captured, including the British team ‘Erasure’ and resulted in the men being sent to the prisoner of war camp they were sent to observe, Stalag XI A. British officer Major Worrall requested an interview with camp commandant, Oberst Ochemal. Major Worrall explained the mission of SAARF, and with the war looking like it was lost and the Soviet Russians fast approaching, the camp commander eventually cooperated and allowed the SAARF teams to set up communications with SHAEF. On 3rd May 1945, Major General Robert Macon, US army, sent a convoy of trucks into liberate the allied prisoners of war and transport them west, along with the captured German commander and his men. US trucks were sent in with aid and rations. Due to the time taken from the initial landing on the 25th April, for a deal to be done between German commander and US forces, the Soviet army had advanced and they arrived at the camp on 4th May 1945. The area of the camp had been decided, would be in the Soviet controlled zone, so they tried to force authority in the situation, only allowing POW’s from certain nations to be evacuated, they blocked Polish and Italian prisoners from leaving. On 5th May, Major Worrell was told by the soviet commander he only had two hours for his SAARF team to pack up their equipment and leave the camp and return to western allied lines. The tensions between the western allies and the Soviet command was starting to show as the war drew to its close.
