Bed Linen. A pair of 19th century French linen sheets, 1853 & 1892, 2 ecru linen sheets, each hand-woven from hand-spun yarn, the first with hand-stitched hems and central join, hand-embroidered in cross-stitch in red thread to one corner 'GJ 1853', 230 x 189cm (90.5 x 74.5 ins), the second with machine-stitched hems and hand-stitched central join, one corner hand-worked in red cross-stitch 'CJ 6 1892', some discolouration, large machined patch, 240 x 184cm (94.5 x 72.5ins) Qty: (2)Footnote: Two pieces of early French linen of exceptional quality, of the sort that is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Each sheet is hand-woven from yarn that was hand-spun, giving a quality of texture which can never be reproduced via commercial means, and producing a final product which is amazingly durable. The hand-stitched centre seams are a particular sign of early sheets, as hand-woven fabrics were produced in much narrower widths than could be produced on wide machine looms. These sheets will have been washed many times, and are therefore unsusceptible to shrinking, and they can be beautifully enhanced using vegetable dyes. Each farm in France had its own field of flax, and so these sheets are almost certain to have been spun and woven on the site where the raw material was grown. Such linen formed an important part of a young girl's trousseau, and hence would often be embroidered with the initials of the bride and her betrothed. More rarely pieces of linen would be dated, as here.

A FINE JADEITE 'LAN CAIHE' PENDANT, LATER QING TO EARLIER REPUBLICChina, 1850-1930. The plaque of circular form, flanked by two dragon masks suspending neatly carved mock rings, below a bow-tied ribbon, finely incised in relief to one side with Lan Caihe wearing loose-fitting robes and carrying a basket in one hand and a flower borne on a leafy stem in the other, walking along swirling clouds with a joyful smile on the face, and to the other with a central Ji ('luck') character flanked by two bats and surrounded by ruyi symbols above similar swirling clouds, each enclosed by a dotted border.Provenance: From a Scottish private collection. Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear. Fine surface polish with an elegant luster.Weight: 41.3 gDimensions: Size 5.4 x 5.3 cmThe translucent jade is of a white tone with a light lavender tinge and a small patch of apple-green color at the top, where it is pierced for suspension. Further openworked areas allowing for suspension as well.Lan Caihe is one of the Eight Immortals in the Daoist pantheon and the only one of the Eight whose gender is ambiguous. Lan is not generally thought to be based on a historical person but is traditionally said to have been born sometime during the Tang dynasty, and lived as a homeless street entertainer, who wandered all over China, singing philosophical songs. She appeared in numerous films; she won Academy Awards for The Diary of Anne Frank (1959) and A Patch of Blue (1965), and received nominations for A Place in the Sun (1951) and The Poseidon Adventure (1972). She also appeared in A Double Life (1947), The Night of the Hunter (1955), Lolita (1962), Alfie (1966), Next Stop, Greenwich Village (1976), and Pete's Dragon (1977). In addition to film, Winters appeared in television, including a tenure on the sitcom Roseanne, and wrote three autobiographical books. Good condition. The photograph of Charles Folkard wearing the smock and leaning over a garden gate was taken in the 1950s in Winchelsea, Sussex, where he and his son built a cottage on the Ridge near the beach.Charles Folkard is best-known for his imaginative illustrative work for children's books, as well as for creating the influential strip cartoon 'Teddy Tail'. Before becoming an artist, Folkard was a magician and performed Punch and Judy shows, appearing under the pseudonym 'Professor Volkard'. It is thought that he probably wore a velvet jacket and velvet smoking hat when in this guise. He only realised his artistic talents when he began designing programmes for his conjuring shows. Family reminiscences recall that at least one of his small grandsons found Folkard's Punch and Judy shows quite terrifying, whilst later he cut quite a figure in his smock.

A head turning teddy bear, attributed to Steiff, circa mid 20th c, of blond mohair with beige felt pads, black and orange glass eyes, pronounced brown stitched snout and claws, back hump and jointed limbs, the head mechanism connected to the tail which causes the head to move, side to side and up and down, 52cm Wear to snout and slight wear patch on left paw, felt pads original but moth holed. A Chinese Jizhou tortoiseshell glazed tea bowl, Song dynasty,12.3cmThere’s a fine crackle to the glaze all over with remnants of red soil around the unglazed foot. A George II Irish silver two handled presentation trophy cup, maker's mark rubbed,with engraved crest, banded girdle and later applied shaped patch, Dublin, 1737, height 20.7cm, 32.5oz.Shaped patch probably covering an old removal or thin area. Leans to one side slightly. Numerous small dents around the body in general. Two small repairs to the base of the body and one other possible repair to similar area. Pablo Picasso (Spanish 1881-1973) for Madoura pottery, a Corrida aux Personnages charger (A.R.104), designed 1950, the rare reverse painted with a faun holding a branch, signed and inscribed ‘Picasso, 1st Septembre 1951’,from an edition of 50, stamped 'Madoura Plein Feu / Empreinte Originale de Picasso' to the reverse, with letter of Authentication from Alain Ramié of the Madoura pottery, dated 25th November 1996.38.7cm diameterTypical Fine crazing to the glaze.
