(oval) (2)Provenance: A Private Estate, North YorkshireLady in Blue and Red:Lined, three keys missing, one stuck behind bottom stretcher bar. Good tension. Original tacking margins removed. Old brittle age and impact cracks throughout - stable and not elevated. Minor pinpoint old losses, and one old unrestored loss above the sitter's head. There has been a campaign of fairly delicate but widespread retouching to cracks and abrasion, with the majority in the flesh tones (see images in UV light). Possibly an older campaign of restoration in the darker areas not visible. Fairly extensive abrasion to the delicate red layers in the drapery which have largely been removed, and some to the flesh and blue glazes. Some of the red has been suppressed in places by retouching. Partially cleaned in the past, old ingrained dirt and yellowed varnish left on in the darker passages and removed in the paler ones. This is opaque in patches. A good even upper varnish layer, not appreciably yellowed. Light surface drit and a few minor scuffs including one small spot to right of head.Lady and Attendant: Old lining, original tacking margins removed. Scattered small restored losses including two to the finger tips, a few in the background, and two in the red attendant's drapery. There has been a campaign of fairly delicate retouching to cracks, abrasion and minor damages, including a larger patch of restoration in the cheeks which appears in natural light as a peachy colour. The bulk of the retouching is to the flesh tones (see images in UV light). The picture has been partially cleaned in the past, with the old yellowed varnish removed in the flesh tones and paler passages, and left on elsewhere. There is possibly an older campaign of restoration below this, but not noticable/visible. The older varnish is yellowed and ingrained with dirt and there are some opaque patches. There has been some abrasion to the paint and ground layers, particularly visible in the flest tones, but there is some on other passages too. An even upper varnish layer, no noticable surface dirt and some minor rubbing of the varnish visible as white spots at the edges.

In passages the cracks are wider, and these have been suppressed in a campaign of retouching, slightly discoloured (see images). The cracks are most evident in raking light and a higher concentration through the table top and plate. Small scattered retouchings to suppress the cracks in the background, and small retouched losses to the right of the righthand glass, further retouched losses in the left hand glass, and above this near the top edge. A small newer unretouched loss to the left of the lefthand glass. There is a diagonal line of retouching running towards the top left corner from the top of the vineleaf, a retouched loss to the end of the vineleafe above the grapes and further small scattered minor retouched losses. Some retouching to cracks in strawberrys, lemon, and a small filling and retouching to the right end of the cherry stem. There is a larger brown retouching above the oyster.Possibly some minor losses to the delicate glazes, but mostly intact. There is what appears to be a retouched or removed? signature or inscription above the butterfly on the left. Lot 1106

Attributed to Magnus Hjalmar Munsterhjelm (1840-1905) Finnish Nocturne landscape Initialled, with indistinct pencil signature/inscription to reverse of frame, oil on canvas, 30cm by 53cm Unlined, minor old damages to turnover margins. All keys present, slighly slack. Old patches of adhesive to the reverse, including one to a break in the canvas (see image in transmitted light), 1 inch long. The break has some surrounding overpaint, but not fully restored. A fine brittle age craquelure throughout, with some slighly elevated larger cracks in thick paint including to the moon. The rest of craquelure looks mostly secure and not too elevated, but appears whitish in the darker passages, particularly the left hand side. It is not clear if this is due to abrasion over the slightly raised cracks, or crazing of an old varnish which makes it look opaque and white where it is scattering the light. Slight stretcher bar marks.Scattered old losses throughout to the paint and ground. Crudely retouched and not fully restored. Larger losses include a cluster of losses in a patch above right of the reflection of the moon in the near body of water, a horizontal line above the treeline below the moon, two in the sky, a horizontal line in the foliage lower right, to the right of the tree trunk on the right, along the top and right edge, and a 3 inch scratch through the trees on the left. Futher smaller scattered retouched and unretouched losses.Abrasion and thinning ot the foliage/grass, particularly to the trees, and in places to the sky, which has a greyish/greenish remnants of paint in places. Most not suppressed by retouching. (see images). There is also a thick layer of fibers and dust in the varnish, remants of cotton wool from restoration? Some ingrained dirt, and a fairly glossy varnish. Likely remnants of an older varnish in places.

Lot 1038

Thomas Creswick RA (1811-1869)Rustic family at rest beside a stream in an extensive landscapeSigned, oil on canvas, 69cm by 89.5cmProvenance: A Private Estate, North Yorkshire. Mandell's Gallery, LondonLined, with loose cotton secondary canvas at the reverse. All keys present. Good tension, but a little stiff. Sky is fairly pressed in areas from lining process, or an attempt to reduce raised cracks. Particularly evident in the centre top right of tree. Patches of large-scale brittle age craquelure throughout, slightly raised in the sky in places (see images in raking light) but stable. A few scattered tiny unrestored losses including a scratch to the left of the central gatepost, and a white loss below the gate. Ther has been slight abrasion to delicate glazes and outer leaves on the trees. Some reinforcing retouching to the trees, plus some light retouching in the sky, particularly to darker cracks and minor staining in sky. Futher small patches of overpaint, including to the back of the pink bonnet. One large band of possible overpaint or artist's reworking (or a combination) runs horizontally across from the end of the fallen tree to the left edge. From the shape, and remnants of paint under the upper layer, it is possible that the fallen tree extended across the painting - this may have been reworked by the artist and then as the pentiment became more visible over time and with cleaning further suppressed with overpaint. It is a little more visible in the condition report images than in person. The picture has been partially cleaned in the past, with older varnish left on in the darker passages. An even upper varnish, not yellowed. Very light surface accretions - a few fly spots, a brown drippy mark to left of tower, and a yellowish patch of residue at the bottom of the sky on the left.

Lot 1099

Philip Alexius de László PRBA (1869-1937) Hungarian/British Portrait of Admiral Sir Hedworth Meux, head and shoulders, in Naval attire Signed and dated 1926, oil on canvas, 65.5cm by 47.5cm We are grateful to Katherine Field, Senior Editor of the Philip de László catalogue raisonné for identifying this portrait. The catalogue is currently presented in progress online: www.delaszlocatalogueraisonne.com The reverse of the stretcher is covered by an old cotton canvas. Flat, even picture plane. Minor small areas of brittle age and drying cracks (e.g. top of cap badge), all stable and not elevated. One 1.5cm filled and retouched loss in the sitter's left shoulder, and a smaller retouched loss to his right shoulder and a further tiny loss above this in the background. Possibly micro-flaking along the collar? A white material sits in the canvas troughs to the left of the cap, with a smaller patch on the right, and futher patches down the left side of the drapery and in the bottom left quadrant. There is mould growth on the inside of the glass in places. A slightly uneven surface gloss - it is more matt in places where the paint is leaner and thinner. Not appreciably yellowed.

Lot 1065

Amos Watmough (Exh.1884-85) Two heavy horses and a dog at an open doorway Signed and dated (18)85, oil on canvas, 49cm by 59cm Unlined. Three keys missing and the canvas is fairly slack. The canvas is saturated with varnish at the reverse, and there is dirt and debris behind the stretcher. There is blue material pushing through the canvas top right from a filling/retouching, and a lump of material middle bottom associated with a tear/puncture and restoration at the face. There is brittle age and impact cracking throughout, which has had a history of flaking and loss. Numerous losses of paint and ground, some retouched but not filled, others unrestored. Futher sharp lifting points indicate the paint and ground layers are not currently stable. Where the losses have been retouched, the brush strokes are unnecessarily large and extend onto original paint. The retouching associated with the mid bottom tear/puncture too is extensive and appears as a pinkish patch between the bay horse's legs. Ingrained dirt and varnish in the sky and ground. A thick, glossy upper varnish, likely slightly yellowed, and light surface dirt and accretions.

There are a few further touches of strenghtening overpaint to the girl's face, to the shadows of the hanging cages, and a larger patch of retouching to the bottom left corner to the left of the signature. Possibly a further older campaign of minor retouching including to a loss at the top of the fireplace, and in the yellow material on the chair.A little thinning/abrasion in places, such as the back of the girl's skirt and shoe, and in the darkest paint of the fireplace.A good, even varnish, and light surface dirt.
