CONDITION REPORTS Under UV light shows small spots of restoration throughout, from general restoration to secure the piece, appears to have been professionally restored, in particular there is a patch approx. 10 x 4 cm to the background on the right-hand side of the face (but not on the face itself), and there are numerous other small areas of restoration throughout - some to the face area but generally quite even throughout, generally the picture is very dirty with some flaking to the oil lower left side towards edge of frame in at least half a dozen places (see photo) - largest area approx. 1 x 1 cm, some cracking to the oil particularly lower left corner (probably from heat damage) there are at least three or four spots of white paint dropped on the picture towards background, picture appears to have been re-lined but some considerably time ago as is very browned and dirty. Frame has cracking throughout conducive with age, is extremely dirty, giltwork is quite rubbed throughout, various pin head size chips to the giltwork on close inspection, however the general overall impression is that it looks reasonably complete, there is an area on front left-hand side approx. 4 x 5 cm in the background which is discoloured and looks whiter than the rest of the frame.
THOMAS LUNY (1759-1837) "Fisherfolk pulling nets to the beach with various sailing vessels along the coastline in the background", oil on panel, signed and dated 1829 bottom left, 30 cm x 40.5 cm. CONDITION REPORTS In a reasonably modern frame which appears to be in good condition with just a few minor knocks, Large central split across the picture running right through the board (see images) measures 11.5 cm long, some cracking to the oil throughout but paintwork appears to be secure, has clearly had some professional restoration, on the right-hand side approx two thirds of the way down from the top right by the mount there has clearly been some flaking to the paintwork which appears to have been professionally secured (see images), under ultra-violet light the only obvious sign of restoration is the small patch already mentioned on the right-hand side, and a little bit of touching up along the bottom edge of the frame where it has clearly rubbed, other than that we would suggest that the painting has had some professional cleaning in the past and general care to secure the oil to prevent flaking where it has cracked, overall however it appears that the paintwork is solid. The painting is on a wood panel, and the wood has warped. Some small flakes/losses along the crack.
