Julie Mellaerts, Belgian, mid-late 19th century- Portrait of a lady, standing half-length in a lace bodice, black coat and hat; oil on canvas, signed and dated 1884, 70x52cm CONDITION REPORT: in a gilt moulding frame, mid-20th century, not the original frame canvas has not been relined retains the original wooden stretcher with single horizontal cross brace the paint surface has been re-varnished at some point in time varnish has bled through the craquelure with widespread staining on the reverse of the canvas patch top right corner on the reverse tear lower left to the left of the sitter's shoulder under inspection with UV lamp there are numerous areas of re-touching and over-painting throughout the paint surface, in particular the face of the sitter and the hat is subject to pronounced raised craquelure and pigment separation/reticulation there is further craquelure and some reticulation of the paint surface elsewhere the canvas is somewhat ruckled the canvas is subject to bar marks, particularly horizontally in the centre overall in fair condition but will require much further restoration

A COPY OF A LETTER FROM THE DESK OF MAJOR B.E. FERGUSON OF THE BLACK WATCH GENERAL HEADQUARTERS INDIA, regarding the strange story of Lieutenant Philip Stibbe who was shot and wounded and left behind on expedition in Rangoon to wait for the Japs or d eath or from the single Karen Riflemen who disobeyed orders and stayed behind with him, the story continues that long afterwards news filtered through that the brave Karen had been shot and that the Officer was last seen desperately ill in a Japanese Prisoner of War Hospital, the letter is written to Lieutenant Stibbe`s father describing his son`s bravery and what a sad loss and how disheartening it was personally for the Major, however what he did not know is that Philip Stibbe had recovered, r eturned to England and was living in Leicester and that the brave rifleman who was known as Maung Tun was alive and well and living off his own patch of land in his native valley, this made the monocle wearing dandy Brigadier Ferguson, one of the bes t D.S.O.`s of the Burma Campaign the embarrassed idol of the Karen Mission, included in the four page letter is a newspaper cutting describing in full, his faux pas together with a 1939 dated LETTER OF CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION

Calibrated bezel, stainless steel case fitted to a stainless steel bracelet with folding clasp. 39mm. Quartz movement is currently functioning. Movement shows marks and tarnishing. Dial shows marks and tarnishing to the edge. Hands have marks and scratches. Second hand has lost to the red towards the tip. Glass has scratches. Glass shows some chips to the edge when viewed under an eye glass. Unidirectional bezel is at fault as it can be rotated in both directions. Bezel has marks when viewed under an eye glass. Bezel shows a small area of loss to the white under the 35 numeral. Case has scratches and marks. Case shows extensive loss and damage to the rubber protectors. Crown is screwing down and working correctly. Crown shows noticeable wear. Wear has resulting in small patches of metal being exposed. Crown protectors show extensive damage and wear resulting in the metal underneath being exposed. Bracelet has light scratches and marks. Bracelet has a patch of black paint to the top segment. Bracelet shows stretching. Clasp is not closing correctly. Clasp has visible scratches and marks. Bracelet measures 19.5cm including case. This lot does not come with box or papers.
