Fourth Anglo-Dutch War - a rare George III South Staffordshire enamel patch box, the hinged cover printed in black script with a military triumph, Glorious 11th Oct / English Valour Triumphant and Dutch Perfidy Defeated, within a border of raised beads in tones of gilt, blue and white, the white oval base conforming, mirror plate to interior, 4cm wide, c. 1784 The Fourth Anglo-Dutch War, 1780 - 1784, broke out over British and Dutch disagreements on the legality and conduct of Dutch trade with Britain's enemies during the War of American Independence. Although the Dutch Republic did not enter into a formal alliance with the American colonies, their ambassador (and future president) John Adams, managed to establish diplomatic and mercantile relations with the Republic. Most of the war consisted of a series of British operations against Dutch colonial economic interests.

A 30 bore percussion duelling style target pistol by James Wilkinson & Son, probably converted from patch or tube lock by the maker, 15” overall, heavy octagonal twist barrel 9¼” with deep 8 groove rifling and small inserted blade fore sight, top flat engraved “Jas Wilkinson & Son, London”, breech with platinum vent, and numbered underneath 1266, with dovetailed rearsight on the engraved breech tang; stepped bolted lock engraved with scrolls and signed “Jas Wilkinson & Son”, the hammer with separate patch lock style nose; walnut halfstock with finely chequered flattened rounded butt, silver fore end cap and barrel wedge plates, and spurred steel trigger guard engraved with trophies and with pineapple finial, and housing a set trigger; ramrod with brass tip and concealed worm. Small veneer losses, mainly above the drawer. One drop leaf very slightly misshapen. Top with water marks. Crossbanded section starting to lift very slightly and small patch repair to opposing crossbanded section. Interior: associated lid with patera inlaid warped/misshapen.
