Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Amish Blacksmith" Signed lower right. Oil on Canvas painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 34c Double-9 Patch Amish Quilt stamp issued August 9, 2001. Under the spreading chestnut tree / The village smithy stands / The smith a mighty man is he / With large and sinewy hands /And the muscles of his brawny arms /Are strong as iron bands Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1842 poem, The Village Blacksmith, harks back to a time long past in American history. Were it not for people such as the "Pennsylvania Dutch," who disdain motorized vehicles and technology, the blacksmith might find himself without traditional work. Actually, "Pennsylvania Dutch" is a misnomer. They are neither "Dutch" nor "Deutsch," but trace their roots to German-speaking Switzerland. "Dutch" is a corruption of the word Deutsch which means "German," a form of the German language is spoken by the so-called Pennsylvania Dutch. The Amish -- whose Old Order sect gives these people their particularly conservative American identity -- are spiritual descendants of the Mennonites, a sect which began during the Protestant Reformation. The Amish are named for Jacob Amman, a 17th C. Swiss Mennonite bishop. True to Reformation traditions -- there is a saying that "only good wood will split" -- nonconforming Amish are splintered into small groups because of faith differences. Being raised bilingually helps differentiate them from outsiders or non-Amish people. The blacksmith personifies the struggle of Amish peoples to maintain their identity in an increasingly technological world, epitomizing the self-sufficiency that protects them from the influences of the modern world. Image Size: 13.5 x 11.5 in. Overall Size: 17 x 14.5 in. Unframed. (B16948)

Three English engravings, after the drawings of William Alexander (1767-1816), draughtsman with the 1792 Macartney Embassy to The Qianlong Emperor, comprising: 'The approach of The Emperor of China to his tent in Tartary to receive the British Ambassador'; 'View of the Western Gates of the City of Pekin'; and 'Chinese barges of the Embassy passing through a sluice on the Grand Canal'. Each image published by George Nicol in London on 12-4-1796, and framed and glazed. The largest with overall dimensions of 69 x 55 cm (3)Provenance: The Property of an English Lady, and from a Private UK Collection. For another example of the first engraving listed here, see Victoria & Albert Museum, No.E.600-1945, given to the Museum by Mr. G.H. Clarke. See also British Museum 1872, 0210.4 for Alexander's watercolour over graphite picture of this scene.Whilst we cannot be certain as to how accurate Alexander's portrayal of Qianlong's entourage was here, the image brought some sense of Qing Imperial tradition back to England. Qianlong seems not to have received George III's gifts with particular enthusiasm, and Macartney's attempts to negotiate closer commercial and diplomatic links with Imperial China failed. Alexander, himself, was bitterly disappointed not to visit The Great Wall, recording this regret in his journal entry for 28th August, 1793. Nevertheless, he did draw an excellent view of The Great Wall which has survived [British Library. WD 961.f60]. Alexander was subsequently employed as a curator of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, 1808-1816, dying at Maidstone in 1816. His self portrait of of 1793, shows him with a strong face, and with an eye patch across the the right eye.. Please note that it has not been possible to take any of these images from the frame; some areas of wear, foxing, and light or other damage extant to both paper and images.Approach: 44 x 29 cm , frame 69 x 56 cmView: 35 x 24 cm, frame 58.5 x 49 cmChinese barges: 35 x 24 cm, frame 59 x 50 cm

Original vintage travel poster: Weekend in Paris - Holidays on the French Riviera. Poster published to promote organised holidays in France, including weekends in Paris and 10 days holiday on the French Riviera in St Aygulf holiday village. The French Riviera (known in French as the Côte d'Azur) is the Mediterranean coastline of the southeast corner of France, extending from Cassis, on the west to Menton at the France–Italy border in the east, where the Italian Riviera joins. This coastline was one of the first modern resort areas. It began as a winter health resort for the British upper class at the end of the 18th century. With the arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century, it became the playground and vacation spot of British, Russian, and other aristocrats, such as Queen Victoria, Tsar Alexander II and King Edward VII, when he was Prince of Wales. In the first half of the 20th century, it was frequented by artists and writers, including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Francis Bacon, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Somerset Maugham as well as wealthy Americans and Europeans. After World War II, it became a popular tourist destination and convention site. Many celebrities, such as Elton John and Brigitte Bardot, have homes in the region. Printed in France by Publicité S. J., Paris. Ivan Kozlov (B. 1937) "White Winged Scoter - 1994 Russia Duck Conservation" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood Combination First Day Cover for the 1994 Russia Duck Conservation Stamp and Russian 150 White-winged Scoter stamp issued July 1, 1994. Many ornithologists consider the White-winged Scoters that inhabit East Siberia as separate from the North American species, classing the Russian inhabitants as Palearctic forms known as Velvet Scoters. Frequenting the shores of tundra and taiga areas, as well as seacoasts and open lakes, these magnificent creatures seldom appear on land. Flying low and fast, the wingbeats of White-winged Scoters produce a whistling sound that can be heard up to half a mile away. The distinctive white patch on this duck's dark wing, after which this species was named, easily distinguishes it from other Scoters. Another feature that is used to identify this bird is a white marking around its eyes. White-winged Scoter males are further characterized by their black plumage, while both females and juveniles possess dark brown feathers. Unlike other ducks, the breeding plumage of this Scoter exhibits little color change. It is believed that breeding first takes place after these ducks become two years old. After spending their first summer in flocks at sea, Scoters begin forming pairs the following winter. By spring migration, the newly-formed couples are ready to journey to the nesting site. It is believed that their pairs remain together until the first week of incubation. Females are then left alone to care for their offspring. Image Size: 13.75 x 11.75 in. Overall Size: 20.25 x 15.75 in. Unframed. (B14760)
