Benjamin Cam Norton (British, 1835-1900) The travelling stallion with his horseman at Rampton Manor, Cambridgeshire signed and dated lower right "B Cam Norton 1885" oil on canvas 80 x 105cm (31 x 41in) The travelling stallion was a familiar sight on farms around the countryside until probably the 1950s. There is one tale of a horseman's visit with the stallion resulting in 11 foals and 13 children the following year, and the horseman was changed on a yearly basis to try and prevent the extra (human) pregnancies ! If the mare did not get in foal a free service was offered the following year. The season for serving mares was from April to July and the route of the stallion would be advertised in the local paper. A stallion and his horseman would walk about ten to fifteen miles a day, and the stallion would serve eight to ten mares a day. Stallion men were given a card of conduct by their employers "Keep away from Public Houses, Look after your horse first, Get him settled first, Get to bed early". Often the stallion would be taken to stand in the market so that farmers could come and look at him, and a card would say "He has proved himself a sure foal-getter and a sire of many prize winners". Rampton Manor, Rampton, Cambridgeshire, was owned by Charles Edward Ivatt who joined the English Cart Horse Society in February 1880, becoming a life member in 1885 of the Shire Horse Society, and he continued as a member until 1933. Ivatt remained at Rampton Manor until 1914 when he moved to St Mary's Green, Ely, Cambridgeshire. Charles Ivatt bred, bought, showed and sold heavy horses from the early 1870s. In 1878 he bred a Shire colt "Knight of the Shire" (2448) which as a foal took second prize at both Cambridge and St Neots in that year, before being sold to America. One of Ivatt's mares "Cloddy" foaled in 1880 and took third at the great London Cart Horse Show in 1882, as well as second at Braintree and Newmarket. In 1885 he registered three Shire mares with the Rampton prefix, and in 1889 he registered a further thirteen, and ten stallions. In 1882 Ivatt bred a chestnut stallion with a white face "Paleface" (3245) - who won first prize at Ely as one of a pair. The sire was "Prince" (2480) and the dam "Jewel" by "Matchless". This would have made "Paleface" a three year old in 1885, around the age when stallions started travelling. It is possible that "Paleface" is the stallion in the present painting. One old repaired tear by the window - hole has been mended from reverse with a patch, damage filled and retouched to the front. Another small puncture has been retouched but not mended. Otherwsie the sondition is good. Frame in good condition.
