JOAN GARCÍA RIPOLLÉS (Castellón, 1932)."Three spectators at the barrier", 1981.Oil on canvas.Signed and dated in the upper left corner. Titled and dated on the back.It has a patch on the back.Measurements: 73 x 92 cm, 74,5 x 94 cm (frame).Known by his second surname or as "the Blessed Ripo", Joan García Ripollés discovered his passion for painting when, while still very young and in the middle of the post-war period, he started working in an industrial painting workshop. From then on he devoted himself to painting at night, and later took drawing classes at the Ribalta secondary school in Castellón. After his debut in a group exhibition held in 1951 at the Caja de Ahorros de Castellón, 1954 was a turning point in his career, as a result of a trip to Paris where he made contact with the artistic circles of the city. He remained in the French capital until 1963, and during these years he produced twelve paintings for the church of Saint-Paul de Trigan in the Commune des Chaulegnes. However, he was unable to give up industrial painting until 1958, when he joined the Drouand David gallery in Paris, one of the most prestigious in the world. He organised his first major solo exhibition at MACBA in 1962, and in 1967 he travelled to New York, where he exhibited and sold his entire collection to The William Haber Art Collection. That same year, the New York dealer Leon Amiel, of the Larrouse gallery, acquired all his work, something which was repeated on his trip to Japan. From that moment on, he embarked on a dazzling international career that has taken his work all over the world. In 1977 he moved to Holland, where he produced the engravings for the book in homage to Josep Plà. Between 1986 and 1987 he devoted himself to sculpture, producing sixty-two works in ceramic and bronze which were exhibited at the 1988 edition of ARCO. He has organised solo exhibitions not only in Spain, Paris and New York, but also in Mexico, Holland, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, various American cities, Germany and Japan. He is currently the exclusive artist of The William Haber Art in New York and the Galerie Drouand in Paris. In 2000 he was awarded the Premio de las Artes de la Comunidad Valenciana. Ripollés is today one of the most international Spanish artists, and also one of the most complete, as he has worked brilliantly in painting, sculpture and engraving. After an initial stage of correct figuration in which he recreated the landscape of his homeland, his work began to lean first towards dramatic expressionism and then towards a simplified painting based on the imaginative and poetic recreation of reality. Within this lyrical, ironic and somewhat erotic world, he developed a body of work whose roots conceal a deep admiration for Picasso and Chagall. Ripollés is represented in the IVAM, the MOMA in New York, the Museum of the University of Alicante, the Museum of Fine Arts in Seville and the MACBA.
A South Staffordshire enamel patch box – ‘I prize the gift because I love the giver’, circa 1800, of oval cushion form, 4.5cm wideProvenance: property from the 6th Earl Howe of Gopsall Park and Penn House, thence by descent to a Lady of titleSlight wear to top, splits and small enamel loss to interior, small enamel loss and split to side, small enamel loss to edge of base
Oak and elm Longcase clock, with walnut banding, pagoda hood, blind and fretwork frieze, long arched door, pinth base, 10" square brass dial, with cast floral spandrels, signed Davd. Pain at Spittlefields, London, thirty-hour movement, striking on a bell, labelled, "Alfred Bullard, Park Lane, London", height 212cm.Condition report:The pendulum is snapped off from the bob and also at the top end so we can't assemble in situ. Applying some pull on the weight chain the movement does seem to tick over ok, but as you'll see from the additional images it has been many years since the movement was cleaned and serviced. The Weight is present. The movement appears to have started as a bracket clock with the case matched and adapted to house the movement. The face may also be a marriage to the movement. There is a filled patch (below XII) and another drilled hole (near III) to the backplate which would suggest some sort of adaptation. The chapter ring has some blistering to the black enamelling. The hands are replaced with the hour hand being much more copper in tone, and the minute hand is very delicate with a split near the centre. It has also been bent away from the face quite significantly. There is an old paper label applied to the interior of the case with 'Wm Davis Woolford 17xx' in ink, as well as the Alfred Bullard applied label to the interior door. Old repairs and adaptions to the hood and case, hinges replaced. Crossbanding lifting in most areas. Losses to the base section.

A Leica 1 Model A, circa 1925 Please note this is a Leica model I circa 1930 not 1925 as previously catalogued. Black enamelled finish has been worn away from most of the baseplate and around the edges of the top plate. All exposed metalwork is oxidised and worn. Eyepiece has lost its glass internals but for the back glass. A blob of near matching black enamel has been placed over the number and green foil stuck below it (and also at one end). Spools and shutter working. A few notes on the Leicas' history from the vendor.WW1, my grandfather, graduated from Osbourne house ( pre Dartmouth naval collage ) in 1915 took command of a H Class submarine - the squadron was based Great Yarmouth. The photo showing Jolly Roger is him returning after sinking the heavy cruiser ' Deutschland, the other the submarine itself. Few months later, he himself was attached by U Boat; ensuing zig zag, his boat was hit: there were only 3 survivors - my grandfather was one. The U Boat surfaced, picked up the survivors. At that time, German army guarded POWs' treated airmen and submariners badly. The U Boat commander decided to keep my grandfather in ' close quarters ' at the Wilmshaven naval base.My grandfather & the German commander became friends. Grandfather remained here for rest of war - the Admiralty were not told, my grandmother received telegram advising ' lost in action,' ( I have the telegram ) Some 11 months later she received a letter via red cross advising he was alive and well....The German commander was on of the Neuirecher wine family.Post WW1 the two families retained contact: this included visits of the children of both families. About 1935 / 36 Frau Neuirecher gave my father the Leica. He and his brother, both graduated from Dartmouth - also becoming submariners. My father kept the camera with him throughout, to include his time on Dorchester in the Bismark action: two of his paintings of the sinking are at Imperial war museum. He continued to S Boats and XCraft - for action against Tirpitz & Bergen. Somewhere I have photos taken by the Leica of these times.Post war, my father & his brothers took control of German windfall yachts, bringing them over to Portsmouth. One was Marabu, Goring's yacht. They camaigned Marabu to include fitting a mizen mast. One photo is of Marubu tuning the mizen. My uncle is at the helm wearing white submariners pullover & cap. The photo was taken by my father using the Leica. The other photos were also taken with the Leica of various family activities. In 1956 my uncle sailed to Bemuda in Marabu for the first post war Onion Patch sailing series versus US Navy. He borrowed the Leica - took reels of film - including a severe storm under bare poles: problem - he forgot to pull the lens out to activate...I can remember my father using the Leica - I was never allowed to go near it: it stayed in a drawer following his death in 1993.I have never used it as by then the SLR was the mode.PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place.
