A 19th century mahogany bow front chest, of two short and two long drawers, 90.5 cm wide Condition report Report by RB Looks to have been restored at some point in its life, not particularly recently. A couple of minor ring marks to the top, the sides generally good, the handles appear original, there are three keys with it, there is a patch let in to the structure above the bottom drawer key hole, general knocks, wear and tear consummate with age.

A good scarce double barrelled 32 bore Jacob’s percussion rifle, 40½” overall, barrels 24” with Jacob’s deep 4 groove rifling, lug for sword bayonet and 3 folding leaf and tall ladder rearsights graduated to 2000 yards; back action locks marked “Swinburn & Son 1860”; walnut halfstock having steel mounts including single broad barrel band, chequered scrolled trigger guard grip and circular patch box engraved “Jacob’s Rifles”; with sling swivels and original steel ramrod; several parts numbered “554”. Good Working Order and Condition, retaining hints of original finish beneath some recent surface rust; together with its rare sword bayonet, the 30½” double fullered blade having inspector’s mark at forte. A scarce French 20 bore Model 1842 naval percussion belt pistol, 11¾” overall, barrel 6¾”, the tang engraved “Mle. 1842”, the back action lock engraved “Mre Rle de Chatellerault”, the walnut halfstock with brass mounts, 4½” belt hook on left side, lanyard ring on butt cap, and swivel ramrod, the butt cap stamped with small anchor mark, the breech, barrel band and butt all numbered 2224. GWO & C, with age patina overall (hammer spur missing, patch of surface wear to butt). Plate 8

A rare 2nd model 7 barrelled 30 bore Nock flintlock volley gun, c 1790, 37” overall, barrels 20” with deeply struck Tower crossed sceptre and crown (?) proof marks, the right outer barrel engraved “H. Nock”; the lock with ring neck cock, reversed frizzen spring, and no visible markings apart from ordnance viewer’s mark; the walnut stock having Egg type chequering to the wrist, and with conventional brass mounts, including ramrod pipes with original steel ramrod. Good Working Order and Condition (the butt refinished, patch of pitting to lock). Nock was the sole maker of these weapons and produced a total of 655, at a cost of £8,519. Note: These volley guns were originally tested at Woolwich and underwent sea trials on HMS Phoenix off Portsmouth. They were first used by Admiral Howe’s fleet at the Relief of Gibraltar in 1782, the Admiral himself receiving a personal issue (see “Military Firearms” by H. Blackmore, Chapter 5). Nelson objected to firearms being fired from the “round tops” of masts because of the risk of fire to the sails.Plate 66

Walker, Newbury, late with J. Purdey, 314½ Oxford St, London” (slightly faint), the false breech finely engraved with scrolls and a lion’s head; flat bolted lock engraved with border, scrolls, a tiger, and “Walker from Purdeys”; walnut halfstock having horn fore end cap, cheek piece, chequered fore end and wrist, vacant escutcheon, steel mounts including engraved circular patch box lid, and trigger guard with spur grip housing the single set trigger, with its stout horn tipped ebony ramrod with brass end. Good Working Order and Condition (re-finished overall, the mounts with some pitting). Plate 55

Vase 2: gross weight 1661.1g, height without lid 21.5cm, diameter 18cm, minor chips and small patches of missing base layer lacquer, some cracking on the inside of the neck. Pair of Irish silver sauce tureens and covers, Dublin 1821, maker's mark illegible, the rounded rectangular body with moulded edges on paw feet, overall width 22cm., 52oz 2dwt Condition report: Tureen 1 has two repair patches at the leaf caps and a small repair under the lip; the hallmarks on the underside are illegible; the body has general dents. Lid 1 has rubbed hallmarks of which the maker's mark is illegible, the date letter A can be seen and the other marks surmised; impressed 3; it is engraved with a sphinx crest; the loop handle is not hallmarked and one of the bayonet flanges is missing. Tureen 2 has seam repairs at each corner under the rim and on the inside where the handle attaches; it has general dents and a patch of thinness on one side. Lid 2 - hallmarks largely illegible, engraved sphynx crest; impressed 4; general signs of use but no repairs.
