Lot 144

An unusual illustration from a manuscript, depicting the travels of the King's wife Mihr dressed as a Prince and companions at the Ka'aba in Mecca, Deccan, India, mid-18th century, manuscript on paper, the scene depicting the three worshippers within the hateem, the inner circular wall around the ka'aba, with gold detail to the holy shrine, within a courtyard with arched walls, an entrance gate with watch tower either side below, two lines of Persian in nasta'liq script above, the reverse with a prince, presumably Mihr dressed as a man, on horseback with two attendants, one on camelback, a group of sheep to the foreground and rolling grassy hills to the background, with 5 lines of Persian in nastaliq script above describing the sacrifice of Eid Al Adha,  folio 24.3 x 17cm.; painting 20 x 16cm. The Persian text of this unusual illustration refers to the travels of Mihr, the King's wife and her companions towards Mecca, commandments from the King for his vizier, their sacrifice of large amounts of animals and Mihr's circumambulation around the Ka'aba and prayers. Although the text states Mihr is in a state of Ihram she is not shown as such in the illustration, wearing her royal garments rather than the white robes meant to signify that in front of God there is no difference between Muslims of any class or stature. It is interesting to note that the formidable Empress Nur Jahan (1577-1645) was named Mihr un-Nisa at birth, her later name given by her husband the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. Nur Jahan was a very strong and powerful woman obtaining many rights normally belonging to men alone. We do not know if Nur Jahan herself ever made the Hajj nor if this enigmatic text is part of now lost story in which she disguised herself as a Prince and travelled to Mecca but Nur Jahan was not adverse to dressing in men's clothing. A famous painting by court painter Abul Hasan Nadiruz Zaman in the Rampur Raza Library depicts her dressed as a man and holding a gun, her hair tucked up beneath a turban. In 1617, gold and silver coins, which bore her name opposite that of Jahangir, started circulating and a courtier of the period described an incident where she surprised many by appearing in the imperial balcony, which was reserved for men only. She regularly went hunting, issued imperial orders, and designed public buildings, taking measures to support poor women or champion the disadvantaged. In 1626, when Emperor Jahangir was captured by rebels led by Mahabat Khan while on his way to Kashmir, Nur Jahan intervened herself to get her husband released, riding into battle atop a war elephant. Condition Report: The folio is cropped. The edges and corners are in good condition. This folio is repaired and restored form at least one main L-shaped tear. Holding the folio with the scene at the Ka'aba up, one notices extensive repainted areas to the left of the painting, a skillful polygonal patch to the left above the gate, a repaired and repainted tear tot he right and atop of the Ka'aba, the long vertical tear affecting text and painting tot he right. This tear is bordered by further areas of repainting. The rules are in poor condition with some staining and smudging. the two lines of text above are stained, smudged. Holding the folio the other side up (riders in a hilly landscape), one notices the various patches applied to this work. Two are located within the stained and smudged text above. A large area of repaint is noticeable in the corner and affects most of the herd. It mirrors the location of the polygonal insert. The L-shaped tear, now repaired and restored, affects the text, hilly landscape, camel rider, and rules below. The corner has been retouched. The rules have been cursorily retouched with a minute part being refitted upside down. The pigments have dulled, show some staining and would require cleaning. This work would need further sustained attention. The department would highly recommend an inspection in person before bidding.

Lot 778

Royal Humane Society, small bronze medal (successful) (Peter John Sargeant. 24th June 1952.) with integral bronze riband buckle, in Elkington, London, case of issue, good very fine £200-£240 --- Provenance: Dix Noonan Webb, March 2022. R.H.S. Case No. 62,653. ‘The rescue took place on 24 June 1952 on the mud flats at the mouth of the River Colne, at Ray Creek, Point Clear, St. Osyth, Essex. Barry Trevor Stock, aged 10 years, attempted to ride his cycle across the mud flats as a short cut to the far shore starting at about 9.00 p.m. About 200 yards out, the front wheel dropped into a hole of soft mud and the boy fell into the hole with the bicycle on top of him. He struggled but could not get up, so he shouted for help. It was nearly an hour before his cries were heard and by that time it was quite dark. William Norman Station-Bevan, his wife and others tried to find the boy without avail. Station-Bevan then brought his car to the cliff top and lit up the flats with his headlights. This helped Peter John Sargeant and Harold Benjamin Glynn who were having difficulty in locating Stock from the sound of his cries. They sank to their waists in a soft patch, tried a fresh cast and reached the boy. Here Sargeant borrowed Glynn’s stick, clambered into the soft hole and freed the boy whom he carried to safety. Glynn, a sick man, could not assist in this being exhausted by his efforts. For their efforts in rescuing Barry Stock, Peter Sargeant, a schoolboy aged 15 years, was awarded the R.H.S. Bronze Medal and Harold Glynn, a window cleaner, aged 27 years, was awarded the R.H.S. Certificate on Vellum’.

It is missing one clasp and shows signs of wear to the boards and yellowing to the pages as you would expect. Lot 1181

A George III antique walnut kneehole desk, with secretaire drawer above a slide cupboard and six drawers with brass drop handles and all raised on bracket feet. Height 79 cm, width 79 cm, depth 49 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The surface of the desk has a split at the centre leading from the right-hand side 3/4 of the way across which is very slightly open. There are other further cracks leading from back to front on the right-hand side and a small loss of veneer which has been filled in at the rear. There is also slight bubbling to the burr but nothing untoward. There is a further crack from the left-hand side centre leading towards the front edge and coming around the bend back towards the front. This is very slightly open and has some very slight losses to the veneer. The front of the cabinet is generally a good colour and is in good condition. The central door has a small patch of veneer which has been replaced just below the top hinge and there also appears to have been a crack to the timber in the centre which has been polished. Sections of the base appear to have been either replaced or glued back into position at some point also. On the right-hand side of the cabinet there has possibly been some long-gone woodworm which has been waxed and there is also a rough patch of veneer at the top but we would suspect that this is possibly something to do with the grain of timber used at the time of production. There is a small section of timber which has been replaced at the back leg and some of the veneer is missing or loose to the base. The right-hand side is generally much cleaner but again there are some patches of flaky or missing veneer to the base section. Tipping the desk upside down, the rear leg on the right-hand side has been glued back into position and there has been some strengthening to the two right-hand side legs at the front. Looking at the inside of the drawers there are other holes present so there has presumably been other handles fitted at some point.
