John Greenhill (British, c. 1644-1676) Portrait of a Sea Captain, head and shoulders, in a dark brown full-bottomed wig, with one fluke of an anchor to the left of the sitter, in a painted feigned oval indistinctly signed lower left with initials "JG" oil on canvas, in a painted sculptural frame quite typical of Lely, circa 1670 76 x 63cm (30 x 25in) Provenance: From the collection of Ralph Holland Other Notes: A signed oval version of the present Greenhill portrait is in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich where it is catalogued as 'Portrait of a Sea Officer, circa 1675". A suggestion that the sitter is Samuel Pepys (1633-1703), who was the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty, has been considered. The significance of the anchor dates back to the Pilgrim Fathers and is a religious sign of hope. John Greenhill was a pupil of Sir Peter Lely and in his early work showed a dependence on his master that he later overcame. His early death by a drunken accident cut off a promising career. Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas is in plane and the paint layers are sound. There is a small damage to the sitter's chin which has been repaired at the reverse with a patch and filled and retouched from the front. The varnish is clear and even. In the darker paint passages there are clusters of large spots, which appear to be in the paint layer, although not obvious from a normal viewing distance. It is unclear what has caused this. The gilding to the frame is slightly worn.

The paintings appear to be unlined, the edges of the canvas are covered in paper tape, it is possible that the edges of the canvas have been reinforced, The canvases are in plane with good tension. Both paintings have a patch on the reverse reinforcing an old damage. Both paintings have a network of age cracks, some of which are slightly raised. There are small scattered losses across the forehead of the Gentleman and this area has been extensively retouched. Both paintings have localised retouchings which are fairly well matched to the original. The varnish layers are slightly uneven but clear. The frames are in a good condition.

An Indian hand embroidered bedspread, with central star motif and flowers and floral running borders embroidered with gold coloured metal thread against a silk ground. a 20th century modern Italian bedspread decorated with tigers and leopards amongst Regency style flowers, all against a blue ground and with fringed ends, 153 cm x 162 cm and 144 cm x 122 cm respectively and a Victorian paisley pattern embroidered tablecloth with green velvet border, 87 cm x 85 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The velvet and paisley cover has a 3 cm square patch missing to the central panel and further smaller thumbnail size patches due to wear and tear. The remainder is rubbed around the corners and edges but this would be commensurate with age. The paisley embroidery is good throughout and the colours are good. There is a small patch of staining to the green central panel which has bled onto the embroidered section (at approximately 6 o'clock on a clock face) but not excessively. Overall the wear and tear is very much commensurate with age and in general is good. The Italian bedspread is in good order and carries a label for Passamaneria Toscana. The colours and embroidery are good, there are no obvious faults. The Indian bedspread has some loose threads to the central star directly to the centre and also on the left point (west). The silk ground has deteriorated throughout, top quarter, centre left and right of the star and also the bottom quarter, these can be seen using the zoom facility on our website. It has benefited from having been embroidered onto a backing which may have helped preserve the threads from tearing excessively. In general there are some loose threads but nothing too excessive.
