Manuscript Travel Journals of a Co. Cork CoupleCo. Cork: A large quarto Album, rebacked approx. 24cms x 20cms, and with 90 + [5] + 48pp. Journals of a husband and wife from their home in Fermoy, via Cork, Bristol and Bath to London, thence to Ostend, Bruges, Ghent, Brussels (including the battlefield of Waterloo), and on to Paris, returning home via Boulogne, London, Birmingham, Manchester (their first experience of railway travel), Liverpool and north Wales. The excursion lasts six weeks, from 22 July to 3 September 1833, and concludes with a list of expenses. Internal evidence suggests that the writers are Fermoy attorney James Kirby and his wife Ellen. The latter's account of the journey, bound into the back of the volume, is unfortunately incomplete, ending on 14 August when the couple are in Paris. Both narratives are replete with descriptions of towns, parks, palaces, churches, monuments, paintings and statues. James's style is the more robust of the two and he pulls no punches in expressing his likes and dislikes: Bath is indeed a fine city, but "the women whom we saw in Bath are as ugly a set of Bitches as ever I looked at", while those of Paris are "demons in heart and soul"; Windsor Castle is not a patch on that of Mitchelstown, and the beauty of north Wales exceeds all - or nearly all: "'tis Killarney alone can equal and exceed you!" As a m/ss., w.a.f. (1)

• Seen from the sky, Ashford is a patchwork of abstract shapes. Some elements, like the Designer Outlet and railway station are instantly recognisable. A network of roads, roundabouts, and rivers link the patches. Muted colours of built-up areas alternate with green spaces until the town gives way to fields. Our ‘Patch’. • After studying Fine Art at Southampton and Exeter Colleges of Art Phillippa moved to Romney Marsh and worked as an Art Tutor for Kent Adult Education and privately for many years whilst continuing to develop her own practice. More recently, she has often been found ‘up the wall’ in a surprise new career as mural designer and painter with work commissioned by the ‘IMOS Foundation’ in New Romney, ‘The Bradstone Association’, ‘Go Folkestone’ and East Kent Housing in Folkestone and private clients across the region. Her work has been described as ‘illustrative’, ‘like a stained glass window’ or even ‘a bit scary’.

Manner of Francesco Guardi, a late 18th century oil painting on canvas, "Piazza San Marco Venice", figures in market square with ecclesiastical building and clock tower, 58 cm x 70 cm framed. Note: stamped to one rear stretcher J Spender Liner. James Spender of 55 Great Queen Street, Lincoln's Inn Fields and later John Street Fitzroy Square was a picture liner cleaner and restorer. Spender re-lined "Venice; The Molo from the Bacino di S. Marco" after Canaletto: The stretcher is stamped J Spender Liner (Wallace collection) (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The painting has come in for sale from a local private vendor. It has been in her family for generations. As stated in the description, the rear stretcher is stamped J Spender. According to our research J Spender was a picture liner operating in the 19th century and it maybe that some work was done to the painting at that time. There is evidence of a small patch to one section of the rear of the painting which should be evident from our image. We do not think that any work has been done to the painting in recent times. Hopefully our images will give an indication as to the general condition of the picture which we believe to be fairly good. There is some evidence of cracqulere in places. This is more evident to the right hand side of the picture around the balcony area of the church. There are also some strange circular marks in the centre of the clock tower. You will see numerous small stains and marks to the picture and places where the paint is a little rubbed.
Undine, a rare Della Robbia Art Nouveau plaque, dated 1902, incised decoration of the nymph Undine amongst stylised flowers against a blue ground with green border, incised to the lower left Della Robbia, and verso incised ship motif with initials DR dated 1902 with further green enamel monogram for Hannah Jones and further incised signatures G.H.S. possibly for George Seddon and E.M.W. for Emily Margaret Wood, 20 cm x 46.2 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: There is a shallow chip to the top right hand corner which is approximately 2 cm long x 1 cm deep and a further glazed chip just below which is approximately 5 mm x 1.3 cm in length. There is an older chip to the bottom edge just left of centre which is a glaze chip approximately 7 mm x 5 mm. The sides are glazed and there is a small section of glazing missing to the bottom left edge, this is not a chip just flaking of the glaze. Slightly further along just off centre of the bottom edge there is a further smaller 4 mm x 3 mm glaze chip. The left hand edge has a small chip approximately 2 cm long x 6 mm wide. The right hand edge appears to be free from any post production faults as does the top edge (other than the chip previously mentioned in the top right hand corner), there is however a very small rubbed patch to the very edge of the top left side. There are no apparent cracks or signs of restoration. The glaze throughout is very crazed which should be visible on the web image. There is some residue of what we believe to be grout around the left and right hand edges. Other than those faults mentioned it appears to be in relatively good order.
An 18th century walnut chest of drawers, with crossbanded moulded edge above two short and three long graduated drawers with later brass drop handles and all raised on bracket feet. Width 100 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The chest of drawers is in structurally good order. The top has numerous old veneer patch repairs, scratches and water stains. There are also some small losses and minor stress fractures to the veneers. The handles are all later replacements. The top two drawers have had two other sets of handles. The current handles cover one hole however to the left and right of each top drawer front there is evidence of further handles. Both top drawers have no locks. These have been removed and replaced with wood. The three long drawers have also had two other sets of handles. The three long drawers all have locks (we have no keys) and the lock escutcheons would appear to be original. The locks are all old but the bottom lock is clearly a later replacement. The drawer fronts and sides are all a reasonably good colour but the finish is rather glassy and is probably some form of French polish. There are some minor stress fractures to the sides but no significant splitting. The backboards are original. The bracket feet do have some age but are clearly later to the piece.

The bottom left corner has been replaced by a patch of approx 9cm x 7.5cm, the bottom edge again has numerous repairs varying in size the notable ones being 8cm, 7cm & 13cm. There is a small area approx 60cm from the bottom right hand corner where there are numerous repair stitches very close together. The bottom right hand corner has been replaced with a 5cm x 5cm square patch. Working along the right hand side there are some small repairs to the outer border and there is one tear approximately 8cm length which has been re-stitched. The centre field of the carpet appears to be in good order and free from any excessive wear with no signs of any tears or repairs. All the outer borders are worn along the outer left and right hand sides the borders along the bottom and top of the carpet are slightly better.

There is further lighter surface scratch marks around the green bordering the rim. The gilding on the rim has very light rubbing, the teacup rings out nicely when lightly tapped. Both saucers have very light surface scratches to the green ground but are not overly detrimental. The gilding to the base of each vignette is lightly rubbed. The rim on one saucer is rather rubbed with only 25% of the gilding remaining intact, the centre enamel decoration to this saucer is lightly scratched. At the rear of the rocket the silver paint used to decorate the rocket has dripped down onto a pink cloud. There are no further obvious chips, cracks or flaws visible.
F McKay, 19th century, a pair of foxhunting scenes within country landscapes, signed, oil on canvas, 40 cm x 61.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Both paintings are in similar condition. Neither have been relined. The painting with the stream has one small 1/2 cm square patch to the left hand side just between the first and second pair of horses on the carriage. There is a slight blemish in the paintwork at that point. Both paintings appear to have been reasonably recently cleaned and they are in generally good condition. Both however have craqulere to the paintwork. When viewed under a UV light there is no evidence of any overpainting.
Four Continental porcelain figures, circa 1900 and later, to include a young lady with daughter seated upon a bench and cat to the foreground, the others in 18th century style dress, tallest 16 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The figure with the cat has no manufacturers marks but has an incised number 757 to the underside. The gilding around the border of the centre on both is rubbed and marked. The gilding on each rim is very lightly rubbed. Both saucers ring out nicely when lightly tapped.
