Poems, first edition, second issue, with errata slip tipped in at beginning, advertisement leaf bound at end and final blank, without publishers' catalogue sometimes found at end, a few small spots to title and contents leaf, original ribbed green cloth with blind-stamped border and central harp design to covers, pale yellow endpapers, Westleys & Co. binders' ticket at rear, spine faded, faint rubbed patch to lower cover, corners slightly bumped, [Smith 1 pp.6-14], 8vo, Smith, Elder and Co., 1846 [but 1848].⁂ A very good copy, scarce in such fine condition.
Americas.- Hennepin (Louis) A New Discovery of a Vast Country in America, Extending above Four Thousand Miles, between New France and New Mexico...With a Continuation, 2 parts in 1, second English edition, engraved frontispiece, 2 folding maps and 6 folding plates, contemporary ink signature of Chas. Halkett to title and Sir John Halkett to verso of frontispiece with bookplate of Pitfirrane Castle, rather browned, particularly towards end, first folding map with tear, paper flaw tear/hole to lower edge of G3 and 2H3 just touching text, slight worming to outer margin, contemporary panelled calf, worn patch to upper cover, spine a little worn, upper joint split, [Sabin 31372; Wing H1452], 8vo, for Henry Bonwicke, 1699.⁂ Early account by a French missionary of his travels in the North American interior exploring the basin of the Mississippi River, and including the first printed description and engraving of Niagara Falls. ESTC cites only 5 UK copies.

Hereunto is added a Preservation from the Pestilence : With a short Censure of the late sicknesse at Oxford, black letter, title with woodcut device to recto and arms of Edward Seymour to verso, woodcut initials and head-pieces, neat repairs and restorations to head of title with two letters of the first word partially filled in by hand, gathering ❡❡ with neatly repaired tear to top inside corner, small hole to I2 and L4 with loss to a few letters, Q4 with small rust-hole to lower margin, paper flaw to margin of 2A1, 2F4 with small patch of soiling to verso, very occasional light marginal damp-staining, the odd spot, occasional ink notes in a contemporary hand, a bright and sharp copy, contemporary calf, edges strengthened and repaired, later endpapers, [cf. Cagle 621 & 622 (first edition of 1584); Simon BG, 360 (1605 edition); Gabler G16620 (1606 edition)], small 4to, By Thomas Orwin, for William Norton, 1589.⁂ Rare, we can trace only two complete copies at auction in the last 80 years. 'Thomas Cogan, a physician, considered wine the healthiest of all beverages and remarked: "Life and wine for the likeness of nature are most agreeable. And this is the cause I think why men by nature so greedily covet wine; except some odde Abstemius, one among a thousand perchance, degenerate and is of a doggish nature; for dogges of nature do abhor wine'. This preference for wine as a beverage had at least one modern medical justification. Water purification was not developed until much later, and physicians of the 17th and early 18th centures cautioned against the indiscriminate use of water.' - Gabler. Provenance: Katheryne Egerton (ink inscription).

Delivered to the Royal Society, 2 parts in 1 vol., first edition, title a little foxed and soiled and with small hole to outer margin, short tear to foot of B1 with minor loss to catchword, final 2ff. with damp-staining to margins, worming to lower margin, trimmed a little closely at head, the odd spot or patch of soiling, ink ownership inscription to first divisional title, bookplate to pastedown, 20th century calf, spine a little rubbed and faded, [Cagle 597; Gabler G16010; Simon BG 335; Wing C3694], 8vo, by R.W. for William Whitwood at the sign of the Golden-Lion in Duck-Lane, near Smithfield, 1669.⁂ A good copy of a work often found in poor condition or even defective. Charleton's formulations on the concept of brain function are said to have influenced Locke's own writings on the subject. Provenance: Ebenr. Jenkins (ink ownership inscription dated 1794); Frederick William Cosens (1819-1889, bookplate).
Petty (William) The Discourse Made before the Royal Society the 26 of November 1674 Concerning the Use of Duplicate Proportion... Together with a New Hypothesis of Springing or Elastique Motions, with initial imprimatur f., errata f., patch of damp-staining to outer margin, first 2 ff. fore-edge a little frayed, 20th-century antique-style calf, [Honeyman 2462; Wing P1919], 12mo, printed for John Martyn, printer to the Royal Society, at the Bell in St. Pauls Churchyard, 1674.⁂ A scarce and interesting work by Petty that emphasises the utility of scientific investigation.
A RARE .550 CALIBRE D.B. JACOB'S PATENT PERCUSSION RIFLE AND BAYONET, BY SWINBURN & SON, BIRMINGHAM, NO. 381, DATED 1861 with rebrowned barrels each rifled with four deep grooves, fitted with folding leaf back-sight of three leaves and adjustable long-range sight (restored), numbered breeches, long slender tang, signed and dated back-action locks stamped 'Patent' (worn), figured walnut half-stock stamped '548' on the left of the butt, case-hardened iron mounts comprising butt-plate, trigger-guard with chequered spur, and hinged circular patch-box cover engraved 'Jacob's Rifles', a single barrel band fitted with sling swivel, rear sling loop on the trigger-guard, and original ramrod (the iron parts refinished), the sword bayonet with fullered blade (areas of pitting), regulation hilt pierced with scrollwork on the front and with an aperture for the muzzles on the reverse, pommel stamped '541' and with a spring-catch, and chequered leather grips 60.7 cm; 24 in barrels (2) Major John Jacob, Commander of the Scinde Irregular Horse, invented his rifle following a series of extensive trials on a specially designed range in Jacobabad. Prior to this he and his fellow officers had achieved some spectacular results with explosive shells blowing up ammunition carts at long ranges. See Blackmore 1961, pp. 202-204, pl. 67; and Roads 1964, p. 43, pls. 45-47.

Overall wear with corrosion to dark brown in places; patch repairs lower end of field; small spots of old moth damage. The large temirchin guls quartered in red and shades of dark green and blue; lattice medallion main border and dark green/blue trailing floral guards.

Malayer rug, north west Persia, early 20th century, 5ft. 10in. X 3ft. 9in. 1.78m. X 1.14m. Overall even wear; part of main border and outer guards missing top end; fabric patch to top left corner verso. Red field with all over herati design; pale blue spandrels; narrow ivory floral main border within pale gold floral guards. Quite finely woven with velvety wool; soft handle.

Rare WW2 British 45th Reconnaissance Regiment Insignia Grouping, consisting of embroidered shoulder title, far east made formation sign with yellow arrow to the centre, press stud fittings to the reverse of the patch. Accompanied by a theatre made Reconnaissance corps arm of service stripe. This insignia was worn by members of 45th Reconnaissance regiment whilst at Ranchi on 29th April 1943. 45 Recce were part of 70th Infantry division was re-organised in late 1943 as part of the 3rd Indian division which converted to Chindits.
A small early-20th century teddy bear with boot button eyes, prominent snout with vertically-stitched nose, long inverted 'Y'-shaped mouth, on golden mohair plush body with hump, curved arms, shapely legs and replacement pads, (mostly bald head, with three darned patches, inset patch to one leg), 35cm, a post-war Chiltern Hugmee teddy bear with faded golden mohair, glass eyes and velvet pads, 34cm (darn to face) and another teddy, probably Merrythought, 40cm, (3).
