CHINESE HONG-MU ALTER TABLE CHINESE HONG-MU ALTER TABLEThe rectangular panel inset top over a pierced frieze with carved fruit and scrolls centering stylized characters, on trestle supports. Height 42 in., Width 8 ft., Depth 18 1/2 in. Note. The table, lot 455 is in overall very good condition. There is a patch from an old loss to the front left foot. (one image reflects that) there are some scratches to the top surface, nothing major, as well as a slight warp/dip to the center of the table, not very prominent but noticeable when an object is placed upon the center. (images show two/three of the scratches) The wood of the legs and stretchers are of a higher grade/quality than that wood used for the top and carved frieze. The legs posses `internal` (nice) blackish striations running vertically down their face, This brown/black two-tone coloring is not outward appearing or stain. The frieze is carved reasonably well with less distinction in color throughout. The quality of carving is consistently mediocre on the frieze. The color of the top is more consistant and less exciting than the base wood. Having said the above, there is a strong potential that the top and frieze have been associated with the legs and stretchers. If so, it is my opinion that it the base dates to an earlier period and is another made from a different wood besides the hongmu used for the top.
