Grollier de Serviere (Gaspard) Recueil d'Ouvrages Curieux de Mathematique et de Mecanique, third, revised, edition, half-title, title with woodcut decoration, engraved and woodcut initials, head- & tail-pieces, 93 engraved plates (numbered 1-88, with additional plates 31A, 52A, 56A, 72A, and 84A-D, and no plates 39, 48 or 76, not called for), contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, gouge to lower compartment, rubbed, slight worming and worn patch to lower cover, [Tomash & Williams G91], 4to, Paris, C. A. Jombert, 1751.⁂Description of the collection of ingenious mechanical instruments formed, and predominantly made, by the author's grandfather, Nicolas Grollier de Serviere (1593-1686). He was a mirror-maker and descendant of Jean Grolier the bibliophile. The collection included clocks, bridges, locks, water-raising devices, mills, military engines, a revolving bookcase, wheelchair etc. Although described as the "seconde edition" on the title, this is in fact the third.

India.- Bernier (Francois) The History of the Late Revolution of the Empire of the Great Mogol: together with the Most Considerable Passages for 5 Years Following in that Empire, translated by Henry Oldenburg, 2 parts in 1 vol., first edition in English, folding engraved map at end, title within double-rule border, woodcut initials, rust-hole to E2, touching text, K5 with small hole to lower margin affecting catchword, the odd spot or patch of browning, but very good generally, later calf-backed boards, joints cracked, wear to extremities, [Wing B2043], small 8vo, sold by Moses Pitt at the White Hart in Little Brittain, Simon Miller at the Star in St. Pauls Church-Yard, and John Starkey at the Miter near Temple-Bar, 1671.⁂ Scarce, with a section on Kashmir and map at the end covering the Indian peninsula as far south as Golconda.
Naval and maritime.- Norwood (Richard) The Sea-Man's Practice, Containing a Fundamental Problem in Navigation Experimentally Verified; Namely Touching the Compasse of the Earthe and Sea and the Quantity of a Degree in our English Measures, tenth edition, woodcut initials, decorations, illustrations and tables, light surface soiling to title, the odd patch of foxing or light browning but a clean copy generally, occasional ink notes in a contemporary hand to margins, ink stamps to title and foot of 3 or 4 other ff., contemporary panelled calf, gilt, neatly and sympathetically rebacked, slash marks to lower cover, [WIng N1361], small 4to, by W. Godbid, for Benjamin Hurlock, and are to be sold at his shop on London Bridge, near Thames-Street, 1672.⁂ The tenth edition of this important mariner's guide book, the penultimate before Norwood's death. All editions are rare, ESTC lists the BL copy only of this edition. Includes references to the Bermudas ("Summer Islands"), West Indies and America ("salvation is extended to those silly captives of Satan in America by means of the many Plantations we have amongst them.")

The painting is dirty and also has a small crack running through her dress, approximately 3cm, however under UV light there is very little overpaint and the painting remains in pretty original condition. Some of the moulding is missing to the frame, we do have several sections, but not all sections. There is surface craquelure throughout.

An 18th century Staffordshire enamel patch box (af), width 4cm, a circular example, width 4.5cm, and a modern Limoges egg-shaped example, length 6.5cm (3).Additional InformationAs detailed, the first is in very poor condition, the circular example is also restored and is probably early 20th century and the limoges example is not quite fitting correctly and again, not in particularly good order.

A William Moorcroft Cornflower pattern trumpet vase, early 20th century, probably for James MacIntyre & Co, decorated on a shaded green ground, on circular foot, green inscribed signature, impressed number 12, 22cmCondition report: There is a sprayed over patch on the underside and on the base of the interior. The foot and vase have not been parted and there are no signs of restoration or over spraying where the foot joins the base of the vase. There is a large restored 'J' shape crack visible on the interior of the vase approximately 14cm long. It may be that at some point, an attempt has been made to pierce the base in order to accommodate an electrical cable to create a table lamp and the resulting forcing home of the lamp fitting has caused the damage.

Circle of Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Flemish, 1599-1641)A portrait of a lady, possibly Frances Howard, Duchess of Richmond and Lennoxoil on canvas110 x 82cmCondition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas is formed from two sections with an addition above the sitter's head and a horizontal seam. There is an old patch at the lower edge of the canvas on the reverse. The paint layer has some areas of wrinkling and raised paint following the canvas weave. Old losses have been retouched, the retouchings are slightly darkened but acceptable from a normal viewing distance. The main area of retouching is in the upper section of the canvas above the sitter's head. The varnish is slightly yellowed with a light layer of dust. The frame is slightly worn in areas but in a good condition overall.

Some light scattered foxing. A tear upper centre, badly restored with white paint. There appears to be another small torn patch lower centre that has also been restored. Small scattered indents, scratches and surface scuffs throughout. There are some small light white scuffs along lower extreme edge. The paint appears to have gone a little milky in some of the darker areas. One or two very light creases, barely visible. Some chips to the frame.

Canvas is a little loose. Some craquelure in the top half resulting in paint flaking and losses in the sky. A few further small flakes of paint loss elsewhere, namely the righthand hillside, and on the distant mountain top in the left half. A very small repaired hole in the water above the boulders, lower right. Seen under UV light, a patch of retouching in the sky upper left, another area in the central cliff area, and a further small patch on the hillside on the righthand side. A few further dabs of retouching elsewhere. Varnish has yellowed a little. Could benefit from a clean.
