Heald, Madeline Some Early Rhodesian Women 8vo The first of the `Down Memory Lane` books, featuring sixty biographies of typical women who established their homes in the Rhodesia of 1897-1923. Contributions were sent in by families in response to invitations extended through the Press, and by research into other well-known personalities who had already passed on; 323pp. illustrated by photographs printed on glossy paper. Condition: blue boards good, however top of spine has some loss, revealing the bare board underneath; flap-foxed end-papers, very clean contents. A south Staffordshire enamel circular basket shape patch box, circa 1780-85, the cover sketched with an overflowing basket of fruit within a puce and yellow chevron border, the sides painted to simulate basketwork, later mirror lined, metal mounts, 4.5cm (1 3/4in) diameter. Provenance: D. M. & P. Manheim (undated trade label).
A Birmingham enamel circular patch box, circa 1755, the cover transfer printed and over painted in black with The Tea Party signed in the bottom right-hand with `R H f` for Robert Hancock fecit, the base printed with an allegory of The Pen is mightier than the Sword, white sides repainted, the interior of the base inscribed J`ne vivrai plus/ Que pour Vous, steel mirror, 4.6cm (1 3/4in) diameter. A George III silver patch box, by Samuel Pemberton, Birmingham 1791, circular with bright cut decoration, 23mm diameter; a small silver box by William Manton, Birmingham 1928, of plain rectangular form, 27 x 21mm, a small Swiss silver cylindrical box, engine turned, 22mm diameter together with a modern silver and enamel box, probably Indian, of oval shape, 27mm diameter (4)
Richard Thomas Moynan, RHA (Irish, 1856-1906) Portrait of the artist`s daughter, seated full length, in a turquoise dress, a doll at her feet signed upper left ""R T Moynan, RHA, 1891"" oil on canvas 51 x 41cm (20 x 16in) Provenance: Christie`s, London, Irish and Sporting Art, 8 May 2009, lot 16. Unlined canvas. Waxy looking patch on reverse at left hand side but no obvious signs of damage on front. Small area of flaking at bottom edge but otherwise paint layer in good condition. Varnish clear and glossy. Missing section of frame on the decoration to the middle of the upper edge. Cleaned at some stage. Old stretcher bar marks can be seen from the front.
John Frederick Herring, Senior (British, 1795-1865) Mendicant, study of a dark bay racehorse in a stable signed lower right on the stable door ""J F Herring Sen"" and upper right ""Mendicatn Oaks 1846"" and with initials ""JHC"" on the rug oil on canvas 69 x 89cm (27 x 35in) Mendicant was a bay filly, foaled in 1843, and the property of Mr John Gully. She was got by Touchstone, out of Lady Moore Carew. She won many awards, including the 1000 Guiness for three year fillies at Newmarket in 1845; the Oaks at Epson that same year, and the Chesire Stakes, beating Mr. Meiklam`s Godfrey. She was taken out of training, having paid a compromise of 80 giuneas, in a match for 500 guineas, with the Duke of Bedford`s bay filly Bridle. Mendicant proved an invaluable brood mare to Sir Joseph, seeing that she was the dam of Beadsman, who won the Derby, and begat Sir Joseph`s famous trio, Blue Gown, Rosicrucian and Greensleave, as well as the Palmer and Pero Gomez. Old Christie`s stencil XG 683 - on a Roberson canvas with canvas mark - craquelure overall - unlined. Old gilt frame has several chips. A late Herring. Small patch on reverse to the top centre - small area of damage that has been retouched - retouching has discoloured. Prominent craquelure in upper half of painting, but paint layer is stable. Thin varnish layer which is glossy and even.
AN 18TH CENTURY REFECTORY TABLE having a triple planked oblong top with cleated ends, raised on four chamferred square section legs linked by a H-from stretcher. 70cm(h) x 232cm(L) x 92cm(d)CONDITION: The top with marks, stains and scratches, patch repair and some old worm damage, one cleated end with corner depletion, the two side rails with knot holes etc, two cut sections to each end, possibly being old replacements, movement to structure.
A 19TH CENTURY MAHOGANY SERPENTINE-FRONTED CHEST OF DRAWERS having a well defined serpentine fronted rectangular top with strung three-quarter banding, a shallow frieze and four long graduating drawers, each strung and with replacement oval gilt metal back plates and rope-twist handles, raised on bracket feet flanking a shaped apron. 99cm(h) x 123cm(w) x 61cm(d) CONDITION: Marks, stains and scratches, two large patch repairs to top, some moulding depletions and repairs, stringing depletions and repairs to drawers, replacement handles, viewing advised.
AN EDWARDIAN INLAID ROSEWOOD AND MAHOGANY OCCASIONAL TABLE having a circular banded top decorated with a spiral of foliate inlay, an applied brass edge and single drawer to the inlaid frieze, raised on tapering square section legs united by an under-tier with conforming decoration, on spade feet. 74cm(h) x 44cm(d)CONDITION: Small patch of veneer loss to top, some veneer losses to frieze, knocks to under-tiers brass edge.
