Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.

A Happy Pair, first and only edition, 6 chromolithographed illustrations, each monogrammed H.B.P., original wrappers with upper cover illustration by Beatrix Potter and lower cover initialled H.I.M., original silk cord and tassels (one detached but present), slight wear to spine, patch of soiling to lower cover, continuing on to facing leaf, a near-fine copy, 16mo, London, Hildesheimer & Faulkner, and New York, Geo. C.Whitney, [1890].*** A superb example of first book illustrated throughout by Beatrix Potter, rare in such condition. Potter utilisied some of the card designs she had sent to Hildesheimer & Faulkner for which she was paid £6 with a request for more sketches. Faulkner himself failed to impress Beatrix Potter, who noted in her journal "he did not strike me as being a person with much taste"; it was however the commencement of her professional career and she went on to regularly provide Hildesheimer & Faulkner with further card designs.

Goodman '92' (lower left), oil on canvas, 72 x 42 cm, in an ornate giltwood frame 105.5 x 75.5 cm;and associated publications: Henry Blackburn's Art Handbooks 'The Academy Notes 1892' - No. 91 (illustrated); 'Royal Academy Pictures - being the Royal Academy Supplement of 'The Magazine of Art', 1892 (illustrated); 'Black and White' handbook to the Royal Academy and New Gallery Pictures 1892 - No. 91 (illustrated), a German postcard depicting the painting, and a fragment from Pearson's Magazine with an article on Maude Goodman illustrating the painting. Exhibited: 124th Royal Academy Exhibition, Burlington House, 1892Purchased by the vendor from Abell Auctions, Los Angeles, May 2018 thence a Private Collection. One small patch to the canvas is evident from the rear, I have taken an image from the area of the front of the canvas to show or not where the repair has been. The paint surface is clean and bright and has obviously been cleaned and restored sympathetically and doesn't show any glaring areas of repair/damage paint loss or crazing.

Bing - A large Limited Edition #40012 jointed, growling 'Bernie Golf Bear' by Bing. The golden bear with plastic eyes wears red jumper tartan trousers, with tartan hat, and comes with putter and golf ball. The bear has Bing swing label attached which numbers 'Bernie' 2 of 100 produced. There's a small faded patch to the head, otherwise the 76cm high bear appears to be in Excellent condition.
