James George Hilliard, 24th Squadron S.A.A.F. (2nd Battalion Royal Norfolk regiment). A comprehensive collection of documents, Medals and war time effects. James George Hilliard, Enlisted 17/2/1931 2nd battalion Royal Norfolk Regiment. Discharged 2nd September 1941. Enlisted Palestinian police within the period and awarded the George VI Palestinian General Service medal. Further on in his military courier he enlisted with the S.A.A.F as Flight Sargent , 1941, from Wireless operator to Air Gunner. During operations on the 18th January 1943, the Boston (Douglas A-20 Havoc ) forced to land in the Western Desert for which he was awarded a badge and certificate for the ‘Late Arrivals Club’. The ‘Late Arrivals Club’ or Winged Boot Club was born during the Western Desert Campaign in 1941. During this conflict many airmen were shot down, bailed out of aircraft, or crash landed deep in the desert. They then had to make their way back to safety, often from behind enemy lines… This collection includes many photographs and documents including his flight log, Passport, Certificate of service, 2 Silk maps, Pierpoint manual wind pilots wristwatch, Snapshots photo album, Britannia patch, S.A.A.F patch, a copy of Per Noctem Per Diem (through the night through the day), Cap Badge, ID bracelet and the Late arrivals badge engraved to the reverse Mother from Jim, Late Arrivals Club, 18.1.43. Medals within this lot include 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Atlantic Star, Italy Star, 1939-45 war medal each medal marked for 313130 J.G Hilliard.

A FINE PAIR OF MAHOGANY HALL BENCHES AFTER A DESIGN BY JAMES WYATT, POSSIBLY BY MACK, WILLIAMS & GIBTON CIRCA 1820-1840 each 85cm high, 124.5cm wide, 48cm deep Provenance: The Collection of the Late Marion Oates Charles (1919-2018) Sold, Christie's, New York, August Collections, 20th August 2020, Lot 2 ($68,750) The distinctive design of these hall benches, and their features, directly derives from hall chairs designed by James Wyatt (1746-1814) for his 'great neoclassical masterpiece', Castle Coole, Co. Fermanagh, Ireland for Armar Lowry-Corry, 1st Earl of Belmore (1740-1802) in the late 18th century (The Knight of Glin and J. Peill, Irish Furniture, London and New Haven, 2007, pp. 185-187). This attractive design embraced fashionable elegant classical forms while adhering to the great centuries-old tradition of wooden-seated hall furniture. An early 20th century mahogany and upholstered two-seater sofa by Howard & Sons of London - with scroll back and arms, upholstered in the original 'H&S' monogrammed grey ticking, the underside of the sprung seat with exposed curved beech wood spar, raised on square tapered legs with brass castors (not stamped), the underside of the seat with red and white embroidered label 'Howard & Sons Ltd, By Appointment, 25,26,27 Berners St London', further inscribed in ink '2220/4199 E. Dale F. Davey' (LWH 159 x 85.5 x 77.5 cm), structurally sound, the upholstery with stains and a few small holes.* Condition: The frame appears to be very sound structurally, with no evidence of previous restoration. The rear legs may have been reduced in height as they are very short - possibly replaced castors. The legs and castors are secure with no movement and the structure is very sound overall with very little movement. The upholstery is toned, notably to the arms and back, and there are two large ring stains to the back and two smaller to the seat cushions. There are holes worn through the fabric to the front corners of the arms and the right hand corner of the seat front. Old L-shaped stitched repair to the left hand arm and a small patch repair to the right hand end of the seat front.
