Philip James de Loutherbourg RA (1740-1812) Figures with horses and cart before a cottage, possibly Patterdale Signed, oil on canvas, 38cm by 56cm Provenance: David Messum, Beaconsfield In fully restored condition. Re-lined, cleaned and re-vanished. Paint is a little thin in places. There has been a vertical repair with associated re-touching on the right hand side around the figures, approx 10cms long and with horizontal re-touching running into the canvas towards the horses and cottage which is approx 5cms long. There is one small patch of re-touching on the lower edge and more consistent retouching and over painting throughout the mountains especially towards the peaks. Further small area of re-touching to the left of the horses and sky. Covered in a thin layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Fine stable cracquelure.

Attributed to Michael Dahl (1659-1743) A head and shoulders portrait Mr William Woodward Oil on canvas, 71.5cm by 61.5cm (oval) William Woodward was the only son of Edward Woodward and grandson of Sir Christopher Lewkenor, and heir to John Lewkenor, his second cousin. He took the name of Knight upon marrying his first cousin Elizabeth, and great niece of Sir Richard Knight, he died in 1721. Knight is a branch of the Austen family of whom the novelist writer Jane Austen (1775-1817) was a member of. Provenance: Chawton House in Hampshire. The picture bears the inventory number 15 The canvas has an old reline. The left hand side edge of the sitters lower body below the cravat and across towards his left hand arm has consistant re touching and in filling to old craquleure. These is more linear and isolated re touching/over painting within the folds of the drapery of his left hand side arm (the edge nearest to his body) there are other areas of re touching and over painting within the folds of his gown. There are more minor areas around his shoulder, beneath the cravat, an isolated patch to the parting of his hair running approximately quarter of the length down his face. There are some very minor and isolated patches to the background. There has been an old clean and re varnish, there is small sized craquelure across his entire face and through the cravat and other untouched areas of the drapery.
