A RARE NORTH ITALIAN INFANTRY BREASTPLATE FLUTED IN THE MAXIMILIAN FASHION, ABOUT 1520 with rounded main plate flanged outwards at its lower end to receive a fauld and fitted at the left arm-opening with a gusset decorated at its edge with an angular inward turn en suite with that of the neck-opening (the right gusset missing), the centre of the breastplate decorated with a spray of fifteen flutes diverging from a raised triangular panel (the rear repaired with a large riveted patch; the front heavily pitted) 34.2cm; 13½cmProvenance William Randolph Hearst, sold Parke-Bernet Galleries Inc., New York, 4th December 1952, lot 135.The breastplate shows a preservation typical of pieces obtained from the armoury of the Knights of St John at Rhodes which fell to the Turks in 1522/3. A very similar breastplate from that armoury is preserved in the Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds, III. 1090 (W. Karcheski & T. Richardson 2000, pp. 78-9).
AN UNUSUAL 54 BORE BALTIC PERCUSSION BIRDING RIFLE, FIRST QUARTER OF THE 18TH CENTURY converted from flintlock, with heavy swamped barrel rifled with eight narrow grooves, cut with a raised panel set with moulded silver fore-sight at the muzzle, adjustable rear-sight and grooved at the breech, angular tang, curved blued bevelled lock, set trigger, carved walnut full stock of early form, cut with linear patterns, moulded over the fore-end and about the mounts, angular butt, carved with a scroll and recessed for the cheek on the left, fitted with patch-box with blued steel-mounted sliding cover on the right, blued steel mounts comprising trigger-guard shaped for the fingers, moulded ramrod-pipes and butt-plate 95.5cm; 37 5/8in barrelIt appears that this gun was fitted with a precision barrel at the same it was converted to percussion, circa 1830-50.
A GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE, CIRCA 1660 with octagonal sighted barrel rifled with six grooves and the breech and muzzle each decorated with a gilded panel drawn-out at three points, flat lock engraved with a unicorn and bull engaged in combat, flat wheel-cover engraved with a serpent within a laurel wreath, pierced engraved dog, set trigger, figured walnut full stock, the butt inlaid with engraved staghorn plaques, including a grazing stag and a pair of birds-of-prey on the cheek-piece, enriched with small geometric plaques of both horn and mother-of-pearl, inlaid with marquetry banding along the comb and fitted with sliding patch-box cover veneered in engraved horn, the fore-end inlaid with further marquetry banding over its length and with later plain geometric mother-of-pearl plaques (some inlay replaced), horn butt-plate, moulded brass trigger-guard and engraved bone fore-end cap (the ramrod-pipes and ramrod replaced) 78.8cm; 31in barrelProvenance Counts Schenk von Stauffenberg, sold Sotheby`s, Olympia 10th July 2002, lot 260
A GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING CARBINE, DATED 1652 with swamped octagonal sighted barrel signed in stamped miniscules `Georg Kalb`, dated 1652 and inscribed with the early inventory number `No.87`, plain lock with pierced low wheel-cover, sliding pan-cover and pierced engraved dog, fruitwood full stock inlaid with engraved horn plaques and ball-flower tendrils within horn segmental lines over its entire length, including scenes from the chase over the fore-end and patch-box cover, a bear-hunting scene on the cheek-piece, a rustic figure squatting behind the trigger-guard, and a small plaque behind the barrel tang dated 1659 and inscribed with the stockmaker`s initials ` HA.S`, with a horn plaque fitted over the ramrod aperture engraved with a squirrel eating fruit from a basket, plain horn butt-plate, engraved steel trigger-guard, engraved horn fore-end cap, set trigger, and horn-tipped ramrod 55.3cm; 21 3/4 in barrel
