Three late 18th/early 19th century South Staffordshire enamelled boxes, comprising; a round box, the cover depicting two peacocks near a fence, within an over-lapping concave pentagon and feather border on a cream ground, the fluted sides and base with flower sprays, 4.25cm diameter (1.75in), an oval patch box, 'Bind Me Fast or Set Me Free, Give Me Love or Liberty', enclosing a bird fleeing a cage, on a white ground, the bombe sides pink, 4cm (1.5in), and a round pill box, 'Forget Not An Old Friend and Be Choice of a New One', on a white ground, the sides and base bleu celeste, 3cm diameter (1.25in)
Carpet by the Arab Chepanlu taifeh of the Qashqa'i Confederation, Fars province, south west Persia about 1910, 10ft.7in. x 7ft.3in. 3.23m. x 2.21m. Uneven wear, heavy in small areas. And a rug by the Amaleh taifeh of the Qashqa'i Confederation, Fars, south west Persia late 19th century, 8ft.6in. x 5ft.4in. 2.59m. x 1.63m. Heavy overall wear, small patch upper left inner guard. A late 17th century/early 18th century French oval mounted ivory patch box, with a pique-work cover and base and a stand away hinge, opening to reveal the symbolic miniature portrait of a seductive lady with a bow and arrow, two doves in attendance, a flowing gown and ships in the distance, the cover hinging open further to reveal the portrait of yet another seductive young lady at her toilette and the portrait of a young gentleman in a powdered wig with an unbuttoned jacket, (on paper behind glass), no apparent makers' mark, struck with charge and discharge marks, apparently for Paris 1684, probably dating from 1700-1720.
A good pair of officer's double barrelled 24 bore flintlock holster pistols, by Twigg, c 1785; 141/2" overall, barrels 9", the top ribs engraved "Twigg-London" in capitals; plain flat stepped locks with safety bolts and roller on frizzen springs, dark walnut halfstocks with deeply chequered rounded butts, engraved steel mounts with pineapple finials to trigger guards and throat pipes; horn tipped ramrods, one with steel worm. Good Working Order and generally quite crisp condition (barrels rebrowned with small patches of pitting, one cock repaired and one a good old replacement); in their original deep fitted green baize lined oak case, the lid marked in ink "Edbert Hewett" and Major Hewett, 22nd Regt", containing good brass mounted red leather covered 2 way flask, 50 bore pincer mould stamped "WD", ebony loading/cleaning rod, another 2 piece cleaning rod, brush, worm and bullet extractor, bone handled brush, turned bone patch box, later steel oil bottle, key to case; and a letter headed "28 Carlyle Square, SW3" stating "These pistols were owned by Col Sir George H Hewett Bt of the 22nd Regt. He served in the Peninsular War. He was the eldest son of Genl. Sir George Hewett Bt, 1750-1840", signed "G. Nele (?) Hewett". The whole in generally quite clean condition.
A scarce 6 shot 54 bore Pennell Patent self cocking revolving percussion rifle, 46", browned octagonal twist barrel 283/4" Birmingham poved, engraved "Thos Pennell, 95 Bath Street, St Mary's Square". Colour hardened enclosed action nicely engraved with leopard and stag, with sprung stud to retain the hammer, the top surface engraved "Patent". Foliate engraved steel furniture, blued trigger guard. Figured walnut stock with chequered grip and silver escutcheon. Good Working Order and Condition (small patch of moderate pitting to barrel, top strap missing)
A scarce .75" Tower Land Pattern Brown Bess flintlock musket, c 1775, 58" overall, barrel 42" with Tower proofs, rounded lock with swan neck cock, the plate engraved with crowned "GR" and "Tower", walnut fullstock with ordnance store keeper's mark on butt, regulation brass mouunts, sling swivels, steel ramrod. Good Working Order and Condition, (age wear and dark patina to barrel and lock, small patch in stock above lock, old brazed repair to ramrod and relining of touch hole) (Please see lot 181 for image)
A .526" Jacob's double barrelled percssion rifle, by Swinburn & Son, 1860, 401/2" overall, barrels 24" with Jacob's deep 4 groove rifling, and with 3 folding leaf rearsights and ladder rearsight to 2000 yards; bayonet lug on right side stamped "S&S/D/320", the plain back action locks engraved "Swinburn & Son 1860"; walnut halfstock with plain steel mounts, including patch box engraved "Jacobs' Rifles", sling swivels. Good Working Order and Generally Good Condition (refinished overall, some pitting remaining at breech, ramrod replaced) (Please see lot 189 for image)
A good .62" late model Baker flintlock rifle, 46" overall, twist barrel 301/4" with Tower proofs and folding rearsight, flat lock with bevelled ring neck cock, the plate engraved with crowned "GR" and "Tower"; walnut fullstock with original dark varnished finish, the butt stamped with ordnance store keeper's mark and "IV C R", the fore end with ramrod slit, standard pattern brass mounts, including rounded patch box cover; sling swivels; steel ramrod; fitted with a later leather sling. Untouched Condition, retaining some original browned finish to barrel (action requires attention, light surface rust to barrel, minor defects to stock, including small fracture below lock); (Please see lot 189 for image)
